ocks指“(婚姻等)濒于破裂;(生意等)濒于破产”。

not a concern:该句涉及到一个英语习语的用法。英国人都相信当一个人 早上
起床时,如果左脚先着地,是很不吉利的,预示著这一天会有倒楣的事发生,那
么相应地, 这一天的心情也会很糟糕,很郁闷,容易发脾气。习语get out of
bed on the wrong side就是由此而来,其含义为“心情不好,不愉快”。

3.…although they lived side by side with each other, did not delve
into each other’s lives:句中delve一词本意为“搜寻,翻查”,此处指“探
究,探索”,常用于delve intoin结构中。

4.We had traveled in five minutes to Australia:该句理解时要注意,tr
avel指的是“思想上的转移 、话题的转换”,而不是真正意义上的长途旅行。
此处,作者用travel一词,突显出“闲聊”话题 转移之迅速。

5.There is always resistance in the lower classes to any attempt by
