WHAT A COLLEGE
EDUCATION MEANS TO ME
What does a college
education mean to me? This is a good question but
I have never given much
thought to it.
Finishing the primary and secondary school as a
top student, I just took it for
granted that I
should go on to college for higher education. Now
that I am asked to write on this
topic, I have
to cudgel my brains, trying to provide a
presentable answer to it.
To begin with, I
believe a college or university is the best place
where I can satisfy my desire
for learning. I
remember as I proceeded through high school into
junior and senior years, I became
genuinely
interested in chemistry and physics. I felt that I
wanted to further my studies in these
subjects, and that I would never be content to
end up as a high school graduate. It was then that
I began to feel a deep yearning for knowledge.
And as my high school years drew to a close, the
decision to attend college seemed only too
natural.
Up to now, I have been at college for
more than two years. I have learn ed from my own
experience
that the college is not merely a
good place to seek scientific truth but also an
ideal place to
broaden one's horizon. With
courses and lectures available in different
fields, college life keeps
me in close contact
with a variety of new social and political ideas.
And living on campus also
gives me the
opportunity to meet different people, accumulate
new experiences and know well about
the world
we live in.
Here, I don't want to conceal my
motivation on the practical side. In today's
society, college
education has become an
essential part of career preparation for students.
The job market is so
competitive and this
trend will surely continue in the coming years. A
bachelor's degree or a
master's degree is all
but indispensable if one wishes to find a
satisfying professional job.
And in this
sense, I do hope our current educational system
can teach us young people the skills,
both
scholastic and financial, that we will need not
only to survive but to flourish in today's
world as well.)

M:

W: She painted

M: Yes, that's right.
W. She really looked like a man here. In fact,
she looked as if she's got a moustache! And why
was she dressed in a man's suit? I thought it
might have had something to do with women's
liberation.
You know—she cut off her hair to
symbolize equality or something.
M: Er, no—the
reason she cut off her hair and put on a man's
suit is be- cause Diego Rivera loved
her long

Mexican dresses she used to wear. She did

解析:[听力原文]26-28
The World Social Forum met
for the first time at the end of last month in
Porto Alegre, Brazil.
The World Social Forum
is a new international conference that will meet
every year. Its goal is
to create and exchange
social and economic projects. The projects will
support human rights, social
justice and
development that does not waste natural resources.
Most of the representatives at the recent
World Social Forum oppose globalization. They do
not
agree with the economic theory of a
worldwide economy. Some people attending the forum
wanted
to end the movement toward a global
economy. Others wanted to reform it.
Activists
at the World Social Forum say globalization
policies have caused a greater inequality
between the poorest and the richest people in
the world. The Forum met to find ways to support
economic policies based on the needs of poor
people and the environment.
United
Nations studies show that the poorest 20% of the
world's people have lost half of their
share
of the world's income since 1960. Their share
dropped from 2.4% to 1.1%. During the same
years, income increased for the richest twenty
percent of the population. The rich people
increased
their share of world income from 69%
to 86%.
26. What is the purpose of the World
Social Forum?
e it has widened the gap
between the very rich and the very poor. √

the stall.
解析:[听力原文]29-31
What
happens when a merchant displays an item in his
store window with a price tag on it? Must
the
merchant sell the item if the money is offered? It
is a fact of law that a display of goods
in a
store window is not an offer to sell those goods,
which can be accepted by a customer saying
he
will buy them. Instead, the display is known as an
invitation by the merchant to receive offers
from potential customers. The customer makes
the offer to buy and the merchant may accept that
offer. Then the goods are sold. But the
merchant need not accept the offer, and without
such
acceptance, the customer cannot obtain
the goods or sue the merchant for not letting him
have
them.
Unless the seller accepts the
offer by taking cash from the customer, the seller
is allowed to
change his mind. The merchant
may want to take back the goods because they have
been displayed
by mistake or had the wrong
price written on them, and he or she would have
the legal right to
do this.
29. Where is

A growing number of
scientists insist that answers to the world's
problems will not come from
a (36) flashier
array of electronics and machines. In stead, as
they see it, solutions must (37)
evolve from a
better understanding of the humans that drive the
system and from a fuller (38)
appreciation of
the limits and potential of the earth's resources.
What this means is an increased (39) emphasis
on the life and earth sciences, on sociology,
psychology, economics and even philosophy.
More and more of the best minds in science,
particularly young researchers, are being drawn
into
these (40) developing fields.
Industry officials are concerned by a (41)
declining rate of innovation in technology. Patent
applications by Americans have been (42)
dropping in the U.' S. since 1971. Yet many
scientists
seem to be saying: The need for
better televisions, bigger power plants and faster
airplanes—markers of rapid-fire technological
creativity—is becoming (43) marginal at best.
(44) The market in the industrialized nations
for this kind of technology is reaching a
saturation
point.
All this is not to say
that technological creativity will not play a
critical role in solving
energy and food
shortages, or that (45) answers to environmental
difficulties will not come from
further
advances in the same technologies that may have
helped cause the problems.
Where the real
challenge lies is (46) in finding ways to produce
goods to meet the world's needs,
using less of
the raw materials that are becoming scarce.
