正确答案:(
To Work at Home?

With the development of high technology, more and more people choose to work at home. Every day
they sit in front of the computer, exchanging information with their colleagues, sending messages
and pictures back and forth all over the globe. Why do many people choose to work at home? There
must be something good with it.
On the one hand, you may save money on commuting and eating out because you are working at home.
There are fewer interruptions in your day as there is nobody to chat to. In addition, you can
organize your time better to suit the needs of your family.
On the other hand, however, you may feel isolated and find it difficult to work well without the
stimulus of colleagues' thoughts and opinions. While you may save money on fare and eating out,
you may spend more on gas and electricity at home. Besides, you may need to invest in computers
and communications equipment. Furthermore, it can be difficult to make a distinction between work
and home life, and you may find yourself working 18 hours a day at a lower rate rather than 8
hours more intensely.
In conclusion, working at home does not suit everybody. However, for those who enjoy it, there
is more freedom and flexibility in the working day.)

D.

解析:[听力原文]
M: Do you know the thing that's always struck me as odd about opinion polls?
W: What's that?
M: The percentages. Like recently there was a survey about what people thought about traffic,
and petrol prices, and public car parks. In some car parks it now costs something like $$5 to park
a car for half an hour.
W: Yeah, but I don't see what you're getting at.
M: What I mean is the percentages in the results. So there might be 70% of people who complained
about the high petrol prices, and 60% who want to see the traffic reduced, and 65% who think the
car park charges are too high. Does that mean that there are 35% who actually think the charges
are OK and would even be prepared to pay more, and another 30% who think the petrol prices are
OK? I mean that's absurd. I don't know anyone who doesn't think they're too high.
W: Well, actually I think we should pay more.
M: Come on, you're joking.
W: No, seriously. I think we should pay more for petrol, even twice as much maybe, and certainly
far more for inner city car parks.
M: But why?
W: More taxes should be charged on petrol, I think, to discourage people from using cars, and
a kind of graded charging system for car parks depending on how far they are from the city center.
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, if you park your car quite far from the city center then you'll pay a nominal amount
as a kind of reward for not polluting the city center. Well, the closer you get to the center,
the more you are punished. Prices in the center should be totally prohibitive. I mean with an
efficient bus or tram service there's no excuse for using cars.
M: Yeah, but you can't punish people who don't use their car to go into town. I mean if you doubled
the price of petrol, it would cost people a fortune to go anywhere, even on short trips, and

especially on holidays.
W: Don't use your car then. Use a train.
M: Well, anyway, I still can't believe that 35% of those people who said car park charges were
OK all think the same as you.
W: Well, maybe that's where you are wrong. Just think about what I've said and you'll realize
that perhaps it's not so stupid as it sounds.

What was the subject of concern surveyed in the recent opinion poll?
(2).A. People should be heavily fined for parking offenses in the city.
B. Car park charges should be the same in and out of the city.
C. Car park charges should be as high as possible to discourage people from using cars in the

M: I see. I wonder if you could tell me something about the evening entertainments?
W: Yes, there are several cinemas, stage shows in the summer, night clubs and discos, and of course
plenty of pubs and restaurants.
M: Thank you. Could you tell me a bit more about the stage shows?
W: Well, they're mostly variety shows for British summer visitors—I don't think they're really
very suitable for foreign visitors.
M: Ok. How about the restaurants?
W: There are Italian, Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Greek restaurants—there's even a Swiss
restaurant, believe it or not!
M: Are there any typical English restaurants?
W: That's a bit more difficult. To get a good English meal you need to eat in one of the hotels
or with an English family.
M: I see. Something else I'd like to know is this: are there any sports facilities?
W: Oh yeah, plenty. You can play tennis, go sailing, play squash, play golf—you can even learn
to windsurf.
M: That's interesting. Could you say a bit more about it?
W: Mmm, yes. I do quite a lot of it myself—it's fantastic. You know, you stand on a board, holding

Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn't buy as much as it used to, no matter where you want
to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one's hands.
Inflation steadily eats away at its buying power. But what about coins that seem to do very little
except wear out your purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer
it's is held, especially if it is put away where it won't get scratched or worn. Why is this?
One reason is that coins, being more durable, fall more readily into a category for collectors.
Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the price of this metal goes up.
But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively
cheaper silver. In 1804, the United States mint struck 19570 silver dollars. That is what its
records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach
the auction market. So what happened to some 19564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of
things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon
for the American territory then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in
the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates. The
probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down—since the silver value was greater
than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain
a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.

B. The deliberate amateurs do not pose much a problem for the stores.
C. Those who can't help themselves account for only a small percentage.
D. All of the shop-lifters will be dealt with severely by the courts.(分数:7.10)
A.
B. √
C.
D.
解析:[听力原文]
Shop-lifters can be divided into three main categories: the professionals, the deliberate amateurs,
and the people who just can't help themselves. The professionals do not pose much of a problem
for the store detectives assisted by closed circuit television, two-way mirrors and various other
technological devices. The professionals tend to go for high value goods in parts of the shops
where security measures are the tightest. And, in any case, they account for only a small percentage
of the total losses due to shop- lifting.
The same applies to the deliberate amateurs who are, so to speak, professionals in training. Most
of them get caught sooner or later, and they are dealt with severely by the courts.
The real problem is the person who gives way to a sudden temptation and is in all other respects
an honest and law-abiding citizen. Contrary to what one would expect, this kind of shop-lifter
is rarely poor. He did not steal because he needs the goods and cannot afford to pay for them.
He steals because he simply cannot stop himself. And there are countless others who, because of
age, sickness or plain absent-mindedness, simply forget to pay for what they take from the shops.
When caught, all are liable to prosecution, and the decision whether to send for the police or
not is in the hands of the store manager.
In order to prevent the incredible growth in shop-lifting, some stores are doing their best to
separate the thieves from the confused by prohibiting customers from taking bags into the store.
However, what is most worrying about the problem is that it is yet another instance of the innocent
majority being penalized and inconvenienced because of the actions of a small minority.

Which is true about the three types of shop-lifters?

C.
D.
解析:[听力原文]
A survey carried out in eight countries found that people around the world are annoyed with guilt
about the small pleasures in life. This doesn't stop people from indulging in alcohol, cigarettes
and high-fat foods, but it does stop them from enjoying them. The survey questioned 4000 people
about their attitudes towards a list of indulgences including smoking, eating chocolate and cakes,
drinking alcohol and failing to exercise.
It found that Australians are the world's most guilt-dominated people, while the Dutch were the
greatest pleasure-takers and also least regretful about their indulgences. Germans were second
in the guilt league and were least likely to take enjoyment from physical pleasures.
Scientists said moderate indulgence reduces stress, a benefit that can be completely outweighed
by feeling of guilt. A favorite treat, such as a cup of tea or coffee, a glass of wine or beer,
a cigarette or a bar of chocolate reduces stress and helps people relax. But when people get caught
in the guilt trap, they either try to sacrifice their enjoyment or live with the guilt. This can
undermine the positive benefits of enjoyment which studies show can protect against stress and
strengthen the immune system.
At its worst, stress can lead to depression and illness such as heart disease and cancer.

Human Minds and Positive Thinking

A. Are you guilty of misusing and abusing the single most important asset you will ever have?
Are you investing enough time, effort and money into developing this powerful asset? Or are you,
like most people, letting it decay and atrophy due to disuse until it totally becomes useless
not only to you but to the rest of humanity?
B. It is the most important asset you will ever possess. Like most things in life, it is something
everyone has, yet few utilize it well. While we all look to the outside to find the secrets to
success, wealth and happiness, we neglect and disregard the power within ourselves: our own minds.
C. The mind can be defined as he human consciousness that originates in the brain and is
manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory and imagination. If you need
a simpler and more practical definition, it is he faculty of thinking, reasoning, and applying
knowledge. Why, then, is it the most abused and misused asset man possesses?

As A Man Thinketh
by I have ever read is James inspiring D. One of the most enlightening and books
Allen. In this book he compares the mind to a garden. He says: A man's mind may be likened to
a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated
or neglected, it must and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance
of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.
E. Whatever is planted in that garden is what will be reaped. Just as you cannot plant corn and
reap oranges, so you cannot plant destructive thoughts and reap a happy and successful life. If
you plant positive thoughts you will reap positive results. Plant negative thoughts and you will
reap negative results. Neglect to plant anything at all and the weeds will inevitably take over.
F. There is a reason why a lot of people don't believe in positive thinking and that kind of thing.
It is simply that they do not want to face the fact that their lives are totally in their own
hands and they are afraid of the immense potentialresults if they do so. Believing in positive
thinking would mean that they cannot blame their lack of education, their parents, teacher or
spouse for their failures. It is much easier to think there is some force out there called destiny

that is just against you and takes pleasure in seeing you suffer. If only this didn't happen or
that had happened, you would be so much better off.
G. I am not saying that bad things don't happen in life. Sometimes they do happen. However, your
response to what happens to you, whether good or bad, is your choice. To quote James Allen once
more: Man is the master of thought, the moulder of character, and the maker and shaper of condition,
environment and destiny.
H. Your mind will work just as hard to make you fail as it will to make you succeed. It does not
discriminate between good seed and bad seed. That should be great news. The amount of effort it
takes to fail is the same amount of effort it takes to succeed as far as the mind is concerned.
It is your responsibility to provide it with the right seeds of thought.
I. How do you change your negative thoughts into positive thoughts? It has taken years, if not
decades for you to develop the negative thought patterns you may have. So it would be absolutely
impractical to expect to change these thought patterns overnight. Like the gardener who takes
tender care of his garden, slowly weeding out the unwanted plants and giving care and nurturing
to the desired plants, you must get rid of the negative thoughts and replace them with positive
ones. You cannot simply decide that you will stop thinking negatively. The mind cannot be a vacuum.
Something has to be there. It should be a process of replacement of the negative with the positive.
J. The first step, then, is to be able to recognize the negative thoughts. Any thinking that
emphasizes lack, failure, sickness and so on is negative. If you do not want it, don't think it.
To give a practical example, have you ever seen someone driving a very expensive car and thought
to yourself that you would never be able to own such a car? Replace it with the thought that it
is totally possible for you to own that car. Go out to the car dealer and check it out. Touch
it. Feel it. If you can, get inside it. Do everything you can to bring it within reach of your
mind. You will be amazed at the power such simple exercises can have.
K. By far the best way to change your mind set is to associate with other great minds. The saying
show me your friends and I will show you your future is right on the spot! The company you keep
says a lot about who you are and how you think.
L. If you do not have company worth keeping, do not lose heart. This is, after all, the information
age. Through books, music, movies and the Internet you can have access to the greatest minds that
ever lived. Reading in particular has great potential to break the chains on your mind and expand
it to greater dimensions. Take every opportunity you have to read inspiring, uplifting and
motivational books that will slowly but surely help you to create a beautiful garden in your mind
and weed out the suffocating thoughts that so easily control our lives.
M. Guard your mind jealously. Would you leave your now newly acquired car unlocked and without
any form of protection in Cairo Road? Then why would you leave the greatest asset you possess,
your mind, without defense?
N. Stay away from any form of negativity. This includes good friends that are a danger to your
thinking. You don't have to read everything in the paper about murder, death and suffering! Don't
join the pity party about how he economy is tough and you are just barely managing. Stay positive
in all circumstances.
O. Mahatma Gandhi is a man that is greatly admired and who left an indelible footprint on this
earth. Could it be because he realized the power that he possessed in his mind when he said: You
can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison
my mind.

十二、Section C(总题数:0,分数:0.00)
十三、Passage One(总题数:1,分数:71.00)

Home schooling has long been a refuge for parents unhappy with public schools. Now, a growing
number of athletes, musicians and actors are abandoning traditional classrooms so that they can
focus on their talent.
For these students, home schooling provides the flexibility to weave academics around training,
practices or Hollywood auditions (旁听). Students are free of the structure of traditional school
and can do their schoolwork where and when they choose. And though rules vary greatly among
home- schooling methods, students are under no requirement to log the same number of hours they
would have spent in a classroom.
You need to devote a lot of time if you're going to shine in those creative fields, said Ian
Slatter, spokesman for the Home School Legal Defense Association in Virginia. It's very difficult
within the constraints of private or public school.
But some experts worry that a solid education can suffer if a student is too focused on honing
(磨砺) an athletic or artistic gift.
Home schooling, once common, largely died with the rise of the public school system. In the 1960s,
some parents who were against a perceived one-size-fits-all approach in public schools began home
schooling their children. The following decade, many other parents wanting to inject religion
into their children's education began to do so at home.
By 1980, about 20000 families had pulled children from traditional schools, according to the Home
School Legal Defense Association.
Since then, home schooling has seen exponential (急剧的) growth. Laws have eased, society more
easily accepts home schooling, and an industry has emerged that offers online support and teaching
materials to parents.
Experts agree that most families who home school do so for religious reasons or out of disdain
(厌恶) for public schools, for reasons ranging from safety to poor academics. But county and state
education officials, home-school advocates, entertainment industry regulators and sports coaches
say they're seeing a small but growing number of children who are home-schooled to allow them
to focus on honing an athletic talent or artistic passion.
It is becoming more and more common, said Barbara Colton, who works on home-schooling issues
for the California Department of Education. More and more parents are willing to support their
kids in intensive preparation in arts or sports... so what they're doing is trying to find an
educational program that accommodates that.

十四、Passage Two(总题数:1,分数:71.00)

Almost everyone agrees that the ability to read and write should be a fundamental human right,
extended to everyone. We understand that a person who cannot read is in thrall to (受…控 制,
影响) those who can. You cannot enter the developed world as a full human subject unless you can
break and master the code of the word. Today, literacy doesn't stop with words and numbers. To
enter social and political debates as a full participant, one must also break the thrall of the
magic box and master its secrets. If we fail to adopt media literacy—a basic knowledge of how
and why media images are chosen—as an essential goal of public cultural policy, we doom ourselves
to be forever in the grip of the powerful interests who own and control the mass media. The global
proliferation (激增) of electronic mass media has excited deep feeling and passionate debate.
Most alarming to observers around the world has been the passivity the mass media seem to breed
in most people; it displaces and undermines social life, community activities, and other creative
pursuits. As a society, we need to foster a more dynamic relationship between the citizenry and
the media; one that does not stop when the program ends and the TV is turned off.
Achieving this will require starting from square one. People without some special interest in
the field find it hard to grapple with (理解) the idea that media is a public and political issue.
This is not surprising, since one of the things our mass media do best is pound home the
inevitability of the way that they are currently organized, ideally suited to their role as the
pep squad for our consumer society. Their self-ratifying quality makes it hard even to imagine
that the media can be changed in any way.
The massive complex of business interests that make up the mainstream media have been allowed
to develop pretty much as they wish, in the pursuit of commercial success. Meanwhile, the essential
public issue—the media role as our primary public forum, its tendency to erode democratic
has been pushed further and further into the background.
—life
It is necessary that we think about and promote a public policy that looks at what role media
should play in our society and how people can participate in shaping television and other mass
media that affect all of our lives. Such a public policy could counter the imbalances that result
from the domination of a country's cultural industries by commercial interests.

tremendous contributions to the world's economy and the culture of mankind. Besides the four great
inventions, porcelain is also the invention most significant to the world. That is why today's
