Passage 1
In recent years, larger numbers of people are living a single life, at least temporarily, for this
reason or not. However, they are often pressured to marry by their families and friends, who
regard single adults as irresponsible and unfortunate.
Ross and Bill talk about the frustrations and disagreements. Ross has quarreled with her family.
Her parents continually ask her why she doesn’t get married and have been putting pressure on
Ross to find a husband. This makes Ross angry.
Bill understands how Ross feels. He has also been upset about how his friends react to his
single life. His women friends usually find him dates even is he does not want them. They
introduce him to new people as the eligible bachelor. Sometimes Ross and Bill feel they might be
better off financially if they each found a marriage partner. They know that two people living
together and earning two salaries can afford more than a single person can. They also know about
the income tax advantage s that married couples enjoy. However, for the moment, each of them is
committed to remaining single.
Young people feel many pressures not to get married. Ross has a very good job at the bank and
there is a possibility of a promotion means a higher salary and more responsibility.
She questions whether she can combine success in business with marriage. How cam she fully
and completely take care of a wife’s duties while she can also succeed brilliantly in her office?
Both demand a great amount of time and work.
Bill, too, is hesitant about getting married because of his active social life. He has many
friends and is out with one of them almost every night. How can he ever settle down and stay
home with one person? Will he lose his friends?
At this point Ross and Bill are each trying to settle the questions of whether to get married or stay
single. After all, marriage means responsibility. Both Ross and Bill know they will reach a
decision without being pressured.

Passage 2
No longer do American families live by the rule that “father’s word is law”. Today’s family
tries to be democratic, to give family members some voice in decision- making. Of course, this
approach is not always possible, but when parents must make the decision, it is usually a joint one.
This democratic approach to family life does not prevent all family quarrels. Americans have
familiar phrases to describe various types of family arguments. First there is the battle of the sexes,
when husband and wife fight for control of the family. Then there is sibling (兄弟姐妹) rivalry (对
抗), competition and jealousy between brothers and sisters. Americans also speak of generation
gap, which makes it difficult for parents for the attitudes and behavior of their children and vice
versa (反之亦然)。Married people often have in-law problems, especially when older parents try
to control the lives of their married children. But despite all these common family quarrels, family
members usually get special consideration just because they are family. Americans often give
reason for special treatment of relatives by quoting the expression “blood is thicker than water”.
According to the passage, in modern American families_____.
A: generation gap no longer exists
B: parents often make decisions together
C: children usually make their decisions without asking their parents.
D: democratic family causes competition and jealousy between family members.
2) The passage mainly deal with_____

A: the way to settle family quarrels
B: the way to overcome generation gap
C: the attitudes towards married children
D: problems in a democratic family
3) The word “phrases” in the second paragraph can be replaced by ____
A: sentences B: quotations C: expressions D: structures
4) We can learn from the passage that____
A: Americans think that relatives are less important
B: father was once the controlling person in American families
C: children can easily understand their parents
D: married people often break laws
5) The democratic way to family life____
A: prevents all family conflicts
B: couldn’t stop all family quarrels
C: makes everyone in the family happy
D: has not any influence
Passage 3:
Uncle Harold is a change man. For years he has bored Aunt Grace with his expressions of
regret at missing opportunities, particularly bargains he has filed to take advantage of. “You
remember that old chest,” he would say to her, “I wish I’d bought it. It would have been worth
twice as much now.” aunt Grace’s usual answer was a sigh, though it was never cleat whether she
was agreeing with her husband’s sense of loss, or whether she was silently saying, “I wish you
would stop going on what might have been.” However, Uncle Harold clearly suffered a change of
heart last month. He returned from a furniture sale where he had bought nearly everything in sight.
“I realize,” he told Aunt Grace, “how often I’ve regretted not receiving a bargain when I saw one.
So now I’ve taken a bold step.” He showed her a Victorian sofa, a rocking chair, a stuffed bird in a
glass case, a damaged coffee table, and three vases. She sighed.
For the past weeks Uncle Harold has been moving around the house muttering, “I wish I’d
never seen that sofa”, “if only I hadn’t bought that coffee table”, and “had I know that damned
bird was going to be watching me??” Perhaps he isn’t a changed man, after all. Certainly Aunt
Grace sighs as much as ever.
