I believe in our future
Honorable Judges, fellow students:
Good
afternoon!
Recently, ther is a heated debate
in our society. The college students are the
beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive
exceptional education at
extraordinary places.
But will we be able to face the challenge and
support ourselves
against all odds? Will we be
able to better the lives of others? Will we be
able
to accept the responsibility of building
the future of our country?
The cynics say
the college students are the pampered lost
generation, which
would cringe at the
slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong.
The college
students I see are eagerly
learning about how to live independently. We help
each
other clean the dormitory, go shopping
and bargain together, and take part time
jobs
to supplement our pocket money.
The cynics
say we care for nothing other than grades; and we
neglect the need
for character cultivation.
But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply
for each
other, we cherish freedom, we
treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week,
thousands of my fellow students had their
blood type tested in order to make a
contribution for the children who suffer from
blood cancer.
As college students, we are
adolescents at the critical turning point in our
lives. We all face a fundamental choice:
cynicism or faith, each will profoundly
impact
our future, or even the future of our country. I
believe in all my fellow
classmates. Though we
are still inexperienced and even a little bit
childish. I
believe that we have the courage
and faith to meet any challenge and take on our
responsibilities. We are preparing to assume
new responsibilities and tasks, and
to use the
education we have received to make our world a
better place. I believe
in our future.

Change The Ingredients Of Your Life
This is
a glass of water, tasteless, right? However if you
add sugar, it will
taste sweet, but if you add
vinegar, it will become bitter. The same is true
with
our life____ the flavor is created by our
choices.
If kindness is added to a strange
you will have a friend; but if hostility is
added, you will have an enemy. If love is
added to a pile of red bricks you will
have a
home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you
will have an concentration
camp.
So my dear friends, never complain that life is
boring and the world is
disappointing. If
don’t like the taste of your life, change the
ingredients.
Three year ago, I weighed more
than 100 hundred kilograms which caused
significant embarrassment and frustration in
my life. Like always failing my P.E
examinations, like always being laughed at by
girls, like being terrified to speak
in
public. It was my grandmother’s encouragement that
revived from my passive
attitude to become
confident in myself. She said “ My dear, if you
can’t change
you figure, why not treat it as
your own style. So I began to cautiously employ
the new way of thinking. By choosing to change
my outlook on life, I developed the
confidence
to make a difference and finally I found a totally
new world.
So my dear friend, if faith,
hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you
will find the confidence to conquer your
limitation and embrace new challenges.
And
hopefully with my speech included, you will have a
fantastic speech contest.

The East and the West, Let’s enjoy
the combination of the two cultures?
Kipling
said:“East is east, and west is west, and never
the twain shall meet!”
But now, a century
later, they have met.
They have met in
business. They have met in education. They have
met in the
arts. Some people will argue that
these meetings will leave us with a choice between
east and west, but I believe that the best
future lies in the creative combination
of
both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs
and technology our own, and adapt
them to our
own use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds,
because our tradition
is, above all, one of
selecting the best and making it our own.
I
love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always
reminds me of who I am. But
I am also a fan of
pop music, especially English songs. So I have
combined eastern
melody with western language.
It is called western henna opera.
When two
cultures meet, there may be things in one culture,
which do not fit
into the tradition of the
other. When this happens, we need to learn to
understand
and respect the customs of another
culture. Then there are certain things some people
may not like. To this, I will say, if you do
not like it, please try to tolerate
it. To
learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like
is a great virtue at a
time when different
cultures mix and merge. Before us, there are two
rivers, eastern
and western cultures. At
present, they may run in different courses. But
eventually,
they will converge into the vast
sea of human culture.
Right now, I can see
peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing
side
by side, singing the Olympic theme song:
we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together
we will shape a beautiful tomorrow! Thank you!

Farewell, Indifference
Who
was the most well-known figure in China last
month? It’s Ma JiaJue—the
college student who
murdered 4 of his roommates. Many people
attributed his crime
to his poverty and
deficient education. In my opinion, his crime also
has much to
do with his classmates’
indifference.
Indifference is a terrible
disease in today’s colleges and the whole society.
It’s not rare that two students who have
studied together for 4 years have never
spoken
to each other. It’s not rare that a student who
has been absent from class
for several days is
not noticed at all. It’s also not rare that a
student who has
severe psychological problems
is not cared about at all.
Some people may
say ‘What the students with psychological problems
like Ma
JiaJue need is not care but
psychotherapy.” However, when people are ill, what
they need most is not only medical treatment,
but also care from people around them.
Every
smile and every caring word will bring sunshine to
their life.
I once heard one of my
roommates who was an introverted girl sobbing at
mid-night.
Being afraid of disturbing her, I
sent a text message to comfort her. The next day,
she told me that she was crying for not being
invited to one of her friend’s birthday
party.
She thought she was neglected by others. But my
message was really comforting
which told her
someone still cared about her.
What can we
do to prevent the tragedy of Ma JiaJue from
happening again? Some
people may say ‘Let’s
open more psychological courses in schools.’ and
other
people may say ‘Let’s donate more money
for the poor students.’ But I’ll say
“My
fellow student, let’s give more love and care to
our roommates, our classmates
and every person
around us!”

I Am Tripping My Elephant Here
Once
upon a time, a weenie ant was walking on his way.
As he was walking, suddenly
he felt the ground
shaking terribly. He looked around with his
paranoid eyes and
saw an elephant walking
right behind him. Quickly, the little ant covered
himself
with dirt, but one leg was
unfortunately left out. A sparrow saw everything,
so
she flew down with the purpose of teasing
the ant: “Hey, chicken! Watch out your
leg,
it’s out!” The ant felt embarrassed at first but
then calmly responded:
“ Shi?I am going to
trip that elephant.”
Right now, I’m standing
on this glamorous stage. But everything here
reminds
me of is a not so fun memory. Around
this time last year I was in Nanjing competing
in another speech contest. That was the first
time for me to be in such a large
event. Of
course the pressure I was under was immense too.
After a sleepless and
stressful night, I went
onto that stage without the feeling in my legs.
That speech
turned out to be horrible. I don’t
remember how I get down from there, but I do
remember afterwards I just wanted to find a
hole to hide in just like the ant in
the
story. Back at my school, it took a long time for
me to recover. Thanks to all
the help I got
from my special friends. My confidence was
restored. After rounds
of giving speeches and
answering tough questions, I am here today. From
all that
I’ve been through I’ve learned that a
good future is based on a forgotten past,
if I
want my life to go on well I have to let go of my
past failure. So today, with
out fear, I am
tripping my elephant again.

Hold Fast To Your Dreams
I
have a dream today.
I have a dream that one
day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and
mountain
shall be made low, the rough places
will be made plain, and the crooked places will
be made straight, and the glory of the Lord
shall be revealed, and all flesh shall
see it
together.
Wow, what a dream it has been for
Martin Luther King. But the changing world
seems telling me that people gradually get
their dreams lost somehow in the process
of
growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself
saying goodbye unconsciously
to those distant
childhood dreams.
However, we meed dreams.
They nourish our spirit; they represent
possibility
even when we are dragged down by
reality. They keep us going. Most successful
people
are dreamers as well as ordinary people
who are not afraid to think big and dare
to be
great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of
doing something big and
splashy, something
significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain
them, refresh
them and turn them into reality.
However, the toughest part is that we often have
no ideas how to translate these dreams into
actions. Well, just start with concrete
objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the
nameless fear confuse the eye and confound
our
strong belief of future. Through our talents,
through our wits, through our
endurance and
through our creativity, we will make it.
Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams
die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot
fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go,
life is a barren field frozen with
snow. So my
dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead
dreams. Whatever it is,
pick it up and make it
alive from today.

12 Make Every Moment Count

Make Every Moment Count
One night, I complained to my mom about the
lack of time. Finally she said,"
you are short
of time just because you waste precious minutes on
complaints and
anxiety. The point is, no
matter how full your schedule is, if you try
really hard,
you can always fit in some
thing more."
It is the same with filling the
jar. Even if you place a dozen fist-sized rocks
and a bucket of gravel into the jar, there is
still space for sand and water between
the
rocks and gravel.
The lack of time is just
the excuse for my negligence of every single
minute.
I believe that the great dividing line
between success and failure can be expressed
in six words,"I did not have enough time."The
fact is I do have exactly the same
number of
hours per day that were given to Helen Keller,
Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson,
and Albert
Einstein. The point is I have never touched upon
the real meaning of
life which lies in
snatching, seizing and enjoying every minute of
it. No idleness,
no delay, no procrastination,
no complaint! It is during my moments of
complaining
or hesitation that my destiny is
shaped. Once I make full use of every moment, I
believe that, my worries will be gradually cut
down to nothing.
Time is the most valuable
of all our possessions, but the most perishable as
well. As Henry David Thoreau said,"You must
live in the present, launch yourself
on every
wave, find your eternity in each moment."
Whenever I fell the lack of time in the future, I
will tell myself "Carpe diem ,
seize the day,
make every moment count."
11 Beggars
Today
Beggars Today
Beggars are one of the most familiar groups in
every city. They accompany us
from our
childhood until now, and I've found both the
beggars and I change in this
journey.
Years ago as a little girl, when I came across
some old and disabled beggars
on the road, I'd
donate some pocket money to them, happily thinking
I was helping.
s I have grown older, I've
found the number of beggars has grown larger and
they are more diverse. They appear in every
corner of the city, on the overbridge,
on the
street, near restaurants, and even at your door.
In contrast with the old
days, it seems like
the situation with beggars today is more
complicated, which
has made me hesitate before
deciding whether to help them or not.
It's
hard for me to give them money considering some
who appear beggars in day
time but dress up
and go to fancy restaurants at night; and some who
are controlled
by some illegal organization
and the money they get all goes to the
organization.
If I help them, I'd be making
the problem worse, I'd be doing harm to the
society,
indirectly. But it's also hard not to
give them money, considering there're real
beggars who really need help. If I don't help
them, who will? And where is my
sympathy?
What hurts me the most is not how hard it is to
distinguish the real help-seekers
from the
many false ones, but that some children are forced
by adults, sometimes
even their
parents, to beg. They grow up despised by the
world, out of mainstream
society. When I see
their eyes filled with desperation and impudence
instead of
purity and innocence, my heart
sinks. We don't know how they will face the world
when they grow up, how this will shape their
characters, and what they may do to
the
society, to perpetuate this cycle of violence.
Months ago the Fu Jian government has
promulgated a new policy to deal with
8 kinds
of beggars. An internet survey shows that over 80%
of voters reacted
positively toward the
policy. We know that one single policy cannot
solve a problem
as complex as this one, but we
do look forward to some improvement. I wish all
humanity can live like human.

My Views on Receiving
Education
In my early years, I did not see
the value of education.
When I was going on
thirteen, I started to run my own shop. From then
on, I
worked hard to become a successful
businessman.
One day I realized the
importance of the English language in the business
world
and started taking night classes.
I was able to communicate well with foreign
customers after two years of English
study.
But I started to feel that, in the long run,
having a limited knowledge of
English was not
enough to make my business successful. I knew that
only a well-
rounded education could guarantee
my success in the future.
When I was
eighteen, I had to make a decision to continue
doing business or
go back to school. There was
one obstacle keeping me from getting an advanced
education. I had only completed elementary
school up to that point. I then went
back to
senior high school after four months of tutoring
in different subjects.
Being at school for the
first time after so many years was somewhat
embarrassing
because my classmates were at
least two or three years younger than I. I
concluded
that my age did not matter. The
important thing was getting into college.
I
took the College Entrance Exams. Although my math
exam result was only one
point below the
required score. I never gave up hope. The
following year, I took
it again and received
the highest score in my city. Achieving such an
amazing result
gave me encouragement and
courage necessary to continue my education to the
next
step.
I am now in my second year of
college and know that it is never too late to
learn. My passion for studying and improving
myself will never come to a halt as
long as I
continue to live.
“Live and Learn.”
is the motto I have adopted. I believe with an
education
I will succeed. So, if you are
wondering whether education is important, don’t
hesitate a moment to step up and seize the
opportunity.

He is right. We
always have great plans and dreams in our minds?
too ready
to achieve something grand
that changes the world or benefits all of mankind
.For
example; we hate pollution and have made
up our minds to find new energy sources
that
keep the environment clean. Yet we still litter on
the ground. We complain
about traffic jams, so
we plan to build more highways to solve the
problem, but
it never occurs to us that our
failure to follow traffic regulations is the
leading
cause of this situation. We are so
concerned that the violence in the media has
a
bad impact on our children, we urge the government
to set laws to protect them.
But, do we, as
adults, set a good example for our kids? We use
nasty words and even
spit on the ground in
front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!
In my opinion, before we decide to change the
world, we had better change
ourselves first.
As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power
to change the
world. But we can change our
habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can
respect
the environment around us, we must act
as good models for our kids.
If each of us
does all of these little things, all of us,
millions and millions
of individuals together,
together we will be strong ?strong enough to
change our
world!
So please, the next
time you do something, think how your actions
influence
not only you, but those around you
too, especially our children ?and perhaps more
importantly?our planet!

No One Can Be Perfect
Good
morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today I want to
tell you a story about one
of my friends, a
lovely and smart girl who is always ready to help
others. Being
our grade leader, she is good at
both work and study. In many people's opinion,
she is excellent and perfect. But one day she
told me she was gloomy and insecure.
People
around her considered her outstanding and
flawless, thinking she could handle
everything. But the more she thought about
herself, the more disappointed she became.
She
found that she was far from perfection. Last week,
she didn’t do well in her
French quiz, and the
day before yesterday, she was late for a
conference. She felt
depressed and frustrated,
because she failed to be a perfect girl without
any
mistakes.
I was surprised to hear
that for I thought she had every reason to be
confident.
However, the expectation of
perfection has become a burden to her. I told her
no
one could be perfect and I suggested she
find her own position.
In fact, people are
so eager to be perfect that they demand too much
of themselves.
They want to be special and
unique, and they want to have no defects or
weaknesses.
However, we can never avoid
mistakes and errors. It’s impossible for us to be
a
superman or a superwoman. No matter how
successful we are, there are always some
flaws. If we hold that everything
should be perfect, we would be overcritical.
My friend now has changed her attitude. She
accepts her shortcomings but still
keeps a
positive outlook. She is even more active and
doesn’t allow the mistakes
to hinder her
pursuit of excellence. And I think that’s the way
we should be!
That’s all. Thank you!
时过于追求完美而且期望的太多了。我们想要特别,想要独一无二;

Never Give Up
“If I could
reach higher, just for one moment to touch the
sky?”---this is
from my favorite song Reach.
When we are appreciating the passionate
melody of Gloria Estefan, we could
hardly
imagine that she could return to the stage after
her paralysis. In the year
1990, this Cuban
singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and
the doctor
declared that she might
never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and
kept up
constant exercising. Just one year
after the disaster, she stood up again and
presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta
Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I
can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago,
when I first entered university. Naturally
shy, ordinary looking, average scores
in
study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be
the least outstanding one in
my class. And the
successive failures in the beginning led me into
despair. “Am
I destined to take the back seat
to others?” Unwilling to submit to the fate, I
paid more efforts on my study as well as many
other activities, film dubbing, recital,
drama? cause I just want to catch every little
opportunity to prove myself. Constant
effort
yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I
received some awards and
most of all, I gained
the courage and confidence to face any
difficulties in my
life journey.
Life is
just like farming, and what you can reap depends a
lot on your sowing
and dedication. Once you
have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next
difficult step
may be the one to the top. Keep
going forward, even in the toughest time, and
never
give up.

3 The Importance of Keeping Optimistic
The Importance of Keeping
Optimistic
Honourable judges, ladies and
gentlemen,
Good afternoon! Today I would
like to talk about the importance of keeping
optimistic. When we encounter difficulties in
life, we notice that some of us choose
to bury
their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however,
this attitude will do you
no good, because if
you will have no courage even to face them, how
can you conquer
them? Thus, be optimistic,
ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you
confidence and
help you see yourself through
the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once
said,
“An optimist sees an opportunity in
every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity
in
every opportunity.”
Ladies and Gentlemen,
keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize,
in spite
of some hardship, there’s always hope
waiting for you, which will lead you to the
ultimate success. Historically as well as
currently, there are too many optimists
of
this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is
optimistic; if not, the light
of hope in his
heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred
Nobel is optimistic;
if not, the explosives
and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have
come into
being. And Lance Armstrong is also
optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would
have devoured his life and the world would not
see a 5-time winner of the Tour De
France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that
depends on your attitude only, and
so does
success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties
do exist, but if you
are optimistic, then they
are only episodes on your long way to the throne
of success;
they are more bridges than
obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the
great
British poet Shelley’s lines: “If
winter comes, can spring be far behind?” Thank
you!
漫长道路上的小插曲;
2 What College
Education Means to Me

What
College Education Means to Me
The title of
my speech is “What college education means to
me”.Now reflecting
on the past two and half
years of my college experience, I come to realize
how much
it has shaped me.
For me,
college education is a marvelous ship-builder who
designed me from kneel
plates up.
With
great vision, college education has equipped me,
first with a powerful
propeller----the
sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide
exposure to
other disciplines. By dedicating
myself to the engineering courses in the day and
immersing myself in the rich banquet of the
world literature at night, I’ve amassed
the
driving force for the future and enriched my soul.
Besides, college education has also provided
me with a precise compass----the
sense of
social responsibility. How can I best serve the
interest of the public
while achieving my
self-fulfillment? My one year’s experience as a
part-time
English teacher has testified: to be
valuable to society as well as to find my place,
I have to possess some actual strength and the
ability to function well in the most
challenging situation. Amid the hectic
schedule that balances club activities,
sports, and academic courses, I feel the
rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my
high-
pitched life, knowing that I ’m on the right way.
And more importantly, college education has
set up not only single ships, but
also fleets
with common destinations. By interacting with
friends of common beliefs,
I’ve acquired
skills of relating to other people.
Now ,as
a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,I’m still
not in the position
to tell what’s waiting
ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a
precise compass
and ardent companions of
sailing in the sea of society, I’m ready to be a
great
sea-explorer.
Thank you.

common destiny

Our common
destiny
“ We are made wise not by the
recollections of the past but by our
responsibility
for the future”
----George Bernard Shaw
China is faced with
some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st
century.
In order to ensure the prosperity of
our nation and its future generations we must
confront and ultimately solve these
challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues
facing China are universal. These include
environmental degradation, over population and
the effects of globalization.
To overcome
some of the things we need to implement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrial
technologies in such areas as IT, Bio-
tech,
AI and Cybernetics.
Further develop public
infrastructure in under developed regions.
Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable development initiatives.
The implementation of free trade
agreement between China and ASEAN.
The
benefit to China in introducing these initiatives
will be significant and
far-reaching. It is
important to realize that these initiatives need
to filter down
through all elements of the
society in China. For instance, cutting edge
technologies and intellectual properties; the
development of e-commerce based
economy; an
education system that encourages innovation and
creativity; increased
foreign investment;
higher living standards; more efficient use of
natural
resources.
It is important for
us to realize these reforms are both essential and
necessary.
These will help China to fulfill
its vast and unrealized potential on the world
stage. It will also contribute more to a
globalized world of the new century.
As for
the future our task is not to foresee but to
enable.

及神经机械学领域;
(2)加快推动欠发达地区的公共设施建设;
(3)促进不同层次的教育改革;
(4)使可持续发展的观念深入人心;
权;发展以电子商务为基础的经济;一种鼓励发明与创造的教育体制;
(Finding Me-time is Important)
Hello, Dear teachers and fellow students. It
is my honor to be here on this beautiful
Friday morning to share with you my view on
“Me- time”.
In my opinion,finding me-time is
important. With the development of the modern
society, we students in China have more and
more pressure. We have to spare every
minute
to study very hard and join various kinds of out-
of-class training courses
to improve
ourselves. So we are really in lack of me-time
which is helpful to keep
ourselves from being
over-stressed、tired and worried.
I do not have
as much fun as before and I always miss my
childhood. Three hours
of homework and two
piano lessons one day make me have hardly any me-
time to relax
myself. I was once an active
basketball player on my school team. But now,
basketball,
my best friend, I haven’t touched
it for almost two months. Me- time seems to have
become a luxury.
Last week, when I heard
there was going to be a basketball match between
our school
and No 1 Middle School, I was so
excited that I rushed home and told my parents
the news. I asked my father, “ Dad, may I play
basketball after school ? The coach
says I am
the best guard in our school. If I join the school
basketball team, we
are sure to beat No 1
Middle School this time.” My father showed his
dispproval
and said, “ Of course you can’t .
I’m disappointed at you. Why do you have such
a silly idea? Don’t forget to work hard on
your schoolwork and piano lessons.”
In my
parents’ points of view, playing basketball is a
waste of time.
As far as I’m concerned, the
school assignment to the junior school students is
too heavy. To grow into healthy and
well-rounded adults, we should be allowed to
have more me-time for relaxation. The pressure
put on our students by excessive
schoolwork
can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy
physically and mentally.
My dear teachers, I
hope you can assign less homework so we students
can enjoy a
period of me-time. My dear
parents, would you please not follow me and remind
me
of study all the time? Please trust me that
I will do my best. My dear friends,
why not
stop for a while from your heavy homework and do
anything you like? It’s
me-time. I do think,
that a reduction of the current heavy load would
be beneficial
to us students and to the
society as a whole. Finding me-time will make our
life
rich, colorful and rewarding.
Thank you for your attention!
Finding me time is important(琳)
Hello, my dear
friends, it is my great honor to be here and give
a speech. Today
I want to talk about the
importance of finding *me time*.
May I begin
my speech by asking you a question? Do you often
feel tired, stressed
or worried? If you do
have these problems, you are lack of me-time to
relax yourself.
Psychologist tell us that
stress is caused by too much work or study , heavy
responsibilities , and quickened pace of life
. In my point of view, if you want
to have a
healthy mind and body, having your own me-time is
very important.
Let me take myself as an
example. I was a carefree and outgoing girl before
I entered
the junior high school. I had much
me-time and did anything I like after class.
I
kept a lovely pet and whenever I have time I
played with her happily. However,
the
situation is quite different now. When I want to
turn on the TV、surf on the
internet or go out
shopping with my friends, my parents always look
at me seriously
and say “ Don’t forget to
spend more time on your lessons. If you don’t
cherish
every minute of your time, other
students will catch up with you.”
So,
every day, every moment, I am overwhelmed by all
kinds of assignments. I become
more and more
silent and can’t sleep well before the exams
because I’m dressed
and worried about my
results. I feel so tired and how I want to have me
time to
relax myself. I long for a period of
time that I could walk in a small path in the
countryside, sing my favourite song and smell
the essence of nature.
My dear friends,
having your own me-time is important. I firmly
believe that
achievements depend on our
health. If we want to have a more harmonious state
to
work better, we should find more *me time*
and keep off the overwhelm stresses.
Talks,
jokes, games, fresh air or beautiful scenes will
be helpful for you. Trust
me, you’ll be more
refreshable and energetic.

My Hometown—Inner Mongolia
Good
morning ladies and gentlemen, today, I would like
to introduce my beloved
hometown—Inner
Mongolia to all of you. It has been 57 years since
the birth of
the Inner Mongolia Autonomous
Region on May 1st, 1947. Dominated by the
Mongolian
nationality, the Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region is located on the northern
frontier of China. The Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region occupies an area of 1.18
million square kilometers and has a population
of about 20 million people who
represent a
score of different nationalities. Every time when
people talk about
Inner Mongolia, they’ll come
down to the vast grassland. Yes, the Inner
Mongolian
prairie area makes up a quarter of
the total grassland area of the country. On the
boundless expanse of the Inner Mongolian
prairie are living numerous sheep, Cattle
and
horses, on which our Mongolian have lived for
generations. That is why the
grassland is
eulogized as “cradle of life”. There are two vast
grasslands in my
hometown—Hulun Buir
Grasslands and Xilin Gol Grasslands which are both
world-famous regions. People in Inner Mongolia
are famous for their bravery,
enthusiasm and hospitality. No mater
where you are from, as long as you come to
a
herdsman’s house, you will be warmly entertained
with roasted whole lamb and
milk tea, and
what’s more, you can also appreciate beautiful
Mongolian songs and
elegant dances. It is not
exaggerating to say Mongolians are born singers
and dancers.
The moment you set your feet on
the grassland areas you will discover it is indeed
a real land of songs and dances.
Today’s
Inner Mongolia still maintains her ethnic
characteristics and at the
dame time, she
tries to keep pace with the development of the
modern world. Ordus
is a worldwide well-known
brand, Yili and Mengniu are both the famous dairy
industries, which have greatly improved the
living standard of our Mongolian people.
And
I’m sure, our Mongolian people will make great
effort to contribute to our
hometown. As a
college student, I know quite clearly that my
mission is to master
solid knowledge and one
day do good to my beloved hometown.

23 I can hadle it

I can hadle it
I can never
forget the summer in 1996. I went through an
extremity of despair
due to my failure in the
National College Entrance Examination. It seemed
that my
dream of being a university student
would never come true. One evening my father
came and told me the story of Steven Callahan,
who was crossing the Atlantic alone
in his
sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was
a miracle that he survived
and was found 76
days later(the longest anyone has survived a
shipwreck on a life
raft alone). Later in his
narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself
I can
handle it .Compared to what others have
been through I’m fortunate”.
Hearing these
sentences I felt something important struck me. I
belived my life
would mot be that bad and it
was proved to be true. Later during my study in
the
university I always told myself “I can
handle it” when my own goals seemed far
off or
when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every
time I said it ,I always
came back to my
senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in
a middle school. Whenever my students
complain
about their difficulties in study or want to give
up, I will tell the same
story of Callahan to
them. I just want to make them believe they can
handle their
difficulties because their
circumstances are only bad compared to something
better.
But others have been through much
worse. Then they will build up fortitude.
So
here, coming to us from the extreme edge of
survival, are words that can
give us strength.
Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you
can handle it.
Compared to what others have
been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to
yourself
over and over, and it will help you
get through the rough spots with little more
fortitude.

Welcome to Guangdong
Ladies
and Gentlemen, Honorable Judges, Good afternoon.
I come from one of the most lovely and
attractive areas of China, the Pearl
River
Delta of Guangdong Province and I'd love to say a
few words about this area
that is so dear to
my heart.
Guangdong Province is a magically
beautiful wonderland, with endless natural
treasures. The lush and green mountains are
inhabited by songbirds and exotic
animals; the
farm land is fertile and productive, providing all
of its people with
wonderfully nutritious
grains and all the fruits they need to be healthy
and strong.
The Pearl River meanders through
the province and eventually comes to our beautiful
seashore with crystal clear blue water,
flourishing with all kinds of different
fish and sea creatures. All these
natural advantages help to boost the
ever-
expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the
welfare of its people.
Guangdong is
privileged to have such a beautiful landscape,
with hundreds of
historical sites and places
of great interest to local people and foreigners
alike.
Our capital city, Guangzhou, is also
known as

plants and blossoming flowers overflowing with
vigor.
The people of Guagdong are very
friendly to visitors from anywhere. Whoever
you are and wherever you come from, Guangdong
people will greet you with the only
language
---Guangdong dialect.
Guangdong is also
known as the Chinese capital of delicious food.
There is an
old saying that only best
delicacies are in Guangdong.” Food from this
province
is internationally famous. Its
variety of tastes, shapes and colors can satisfy
even the most refined palette. I'm sure, the
moment you seat yourself at a Cantonese
banquet, your appetite will naturally become
keen and eager to taste all the numerous
delicacies of the region. Here are but a few I
will mention in passing: steamed
fish in
ginger sauce, seasoned chicken, drunken shrimp,
dance fish balls, fried
jellyfish, roast
suckling pig or duck, braised crispy chicken or
squab, shark fin
soup, moon cakes,
refreshments and desert, and so many more. My
mouth is watering
just at the sound of these
wonderful dishes.
I would like you all to
know that there is truly nowhere in the world I
would
rather live and I invite you all to come
discover the hidden treasures of my hometown.
I would be glad to serve as your personal
guide.
Thank you all.

21 Me and my Fears

Me and my Fears
Honorable judges,
distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honor and pleasure to be here on
this beautiful Saturday morning
to share with
you my sentiments about life and passion for the
English language.
About a year and a half
ago, I took part in my very first English Speech
Contest.
When I stood before the microphone
with all eyes starring directly at me, I could
hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and
helpless, struggling in vain for the
right
thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.
While my passion for English has never changed, I
lost my courage to speak in
public. When my
professor again encouraged me to take part in this
Competition,
I said “no.” I couldn’t endure
yet another painful experience. He looked me
straight in the eye and said something that
pierced my heart. I will never forget
his
words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears,
and you have yours. You could
twist your ankle
in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever
play again. Running
away can never
dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is
not one who never
fails,but one who never
quits.”
I spent a whole day with his words
twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made
the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I
would face my fears – and take part
in the
competition!
As it turned out, my dear old
professor was right. Now, here I am, once again
standing before a microphone. My heart is
beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but
most
importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that
makes all the difference!
Thank you.
20 Knowledge collaboration and all-
round education
Knowledge collaboration and all-round education
Ladies and gentlemen,
We
engineering students take it for granted that
technology is changing
incredibly fast. We are
thinking nervously and seriously whether our
colleges are
failing to provide a foundation
in the skills currently needed in industry. Take
my major telecommunications for example.
Scientists say that 21st century is a
biomedical time, not an electrical time. But
without the help of electronic data
processing
and transformation, biomedical technology alone
cannot go too far. Funny
enough, the word
biomedical itself is just a combination of two
disciplines. So
the interdisciplinary
exploitation serves as the critical part for our
electric
and electronics world as well as any
other fields to find new way of being.
But
the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly
not restricted to science
and engineering; it
is in the full community of learning. Walking
around campus
I absorbed a reality that there
is a seamless web between students from different
professional backgrounds. The engineering
students are discussing animatedly in
a
philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the
public speaking club, and looking
for
sparkling ideas from learning history and arts.
How wonderful that is! That,
ladies and
gentleman, is just a significant step forward to
be well-rounded because
once we jump out of
the circle we can see the bigger picture.
My
friends, I hope that you have already got what
university is all about. Please
let me end my
speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s
words: “The
realization of the perfect
combination of science and engineering, science
and arts,
technology and humanity, is the
greatest symbol of a university’s success.” Thank
you.

The Future Is Now-The Choice is yours
As two men were about to be sent into prison, the warden let each of them make
a demand. The American loved smoking, so he wanted three boxes of cigars; while
the Jew said all he needed was a telephone to contact with people outside of the
prison. Two years later, the first out was the American who still had many cigars
in his hands and pockets but was crying: “Give me some matches!” Then the Jew
walked out, he shook hands with the warden and said: “Thank you for the phone,
it made my business increase by 200%.”
What do you think of this story? Life today is what you’ve decided years ago,
and so is the future: your decisions today will affect your destiny years later.
Now I have two things to choose from: to go abroad, to find myself a decent job
after graduation or to further my study as a postgraduate. I haven’t worked out
an answer to this question yet, but I know that whatever I do will directly affect
my future.

LIFE IS A
CHOICE
In our daily lives, we have many
choices to make, such as what to eat for
supper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on
weekends. At certain times in our
lives, we need to make even more
critical choices, such as which school to attend,
what job to take or who to choose as husband
or wife. Yes, life is a matter of choice.
Seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible
things. But in essence, it means choosing
a
way of life. Life is to be lived, savored, and
enjoyed, not to be wasted or
complained about.
Hardly can we forget the time when our
society faced the grave threat from the
life-
and-death disease--SARS. Yet, even during those
dreadful times, some afflicted
people remained
optimistic. Instead of wearing neutral white
masks, some people
turned to colouful ones,
and thus display a happy mood. And some creative

people who survive these

minds to carry on in spite
of the overwhelming

laid-off workers, typically regarded
as the victims of economic advancement,
are
subject to desperation that being unmeployed has
brought on them. But,
encouragingly, we have
witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild
confidence
toward life and discover new
opportunities for demonstrating their values.
Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn
gifts and even avoid unexpected
disasters and
adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to
live
optimistcally,to love our lives, to have
dreams, and to cherish hopes.
Every morning
when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to
approach life
that day. As for me, I choose to
be cheerful.

The
House Debates Health Reform-
Good afternoon, everybody. I just want to say
a few words about the landmark vote
that the
House of Representatives is poised to(随时准备着) take
today -- a vote
that can bring us one step
closer to making real the promise of quality,
affordable
(支付得起) health care for the American
people.
For the better part of a year now,
members of the House and the Senate have been
working diligently(勤奋地) and constructively to
craft legislation that will
benefit millions
of American families and millions of American
businesses who
urgently need it. For the
first time ever, they've passed bills through
every
single committee responsible for reform.
They've brought us closer than we have
ever
been to passing health insurance reform on behalf
of the American people.
Now is the time to
finish the job. The bill that the House has
produced will provide
stability and security
for Americans who have insurance; quality,
affordable
options for those who don't; and
lower costs for American families and American
businesses. And as I've insisted from the
beginning, it is a bill that is fully
paid for
and will actually reduce our long-term federal
deficit(赤字,不足).
This bill is change
that the American people urgently need. Don't just
take my word
for it. Consider the national
groups who've come out in support of this bill on
behalf of their members: The Consumers Union
supports it because it will create
-- and I
quote --
people.
The American Medical
Association and the American Nurses Association
support it
on behalf of doctors and nurses and
medical professionals who know firsthand what's
broken in our current system, and who see what
happens when their patients can't
get the care
they need because of insurance industry
bureaucracies(官僚政治).
The National Farmers
Union supports this bill because it will control
costs for
farmers and ranchers(牧场主), and
address the unique challenges rural Americans
face when it comes to receiving quality care.
And the AARP supports it because it will
achieve the goal for which the AARP has
been
fighting for decades -- reducing the cost of
health care, expanding coverage
for America's
seniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long
haul.
Now, no bill can ever contain everything
that everybody wants, or please every
constituency(选区) and every district. That's
an impossible task. But what is
possible,
what's in our grasp right now is the chance to
prevent a future where
every day 14,000
Americans continue to lose their health insurance,
and every year
18,000 Americans die because
they don't have it; a future where crushing costs
keep
small businesses from succeeding and big
businesses from competing in the global
economy; a future where countless dreams are
deferred or scaled back because of
a broken
system we could have fixed when we had the chance.
What we can do right now is choose a better
future and pass a bill that brings us
to the
very cusp(尖头,尖端) of building what so many
generations of Americans
have sought to build
-- a better health care system for this country.
Millions of Americans are watching right now.
Their families and their businesses
are
counting on us. After all, this is why they sent
us here, to finally confront
the challenges
that Washington had been putting off for decades
-- to make their
lives better, to leave
this country stronger than we found it.
I
just came from the Hill where I talked to the
members of Congress there, and I
reminded them
that opportunities like this come around maybe
once in a generation.
Most public servants
pass through their entire careers without a chance
to make
as important a difference in the lives
of their constituents and the life of this
country. This is their moment, this is our
moment, to live up to the trust that
the
American people have placed in us -- even when
it's hard; especially when it's
hard. This is
our moment to deliver.
I urge members of
Congress to rise to this moment. Answer the call
of history,
and vote yes for health insurance
reform for America.
What Is Real Beauty?
It is human nature that all of us should be
fond of beauty. Everybody was born with
a
heart for beauty.
Today in China,with the
rising of our living standard, people's
requirement of
beauty has been heightened
accordingly. Some people spare no money or energy
on
beautiful clothes, fashionable hair
styles, the decoration of their houses and even
the improvement of their looks. But it seems
to me,all these are more or less confined
to
the beauty in appearance,or rather, the outward
beauty.
In my opinion,we shouldn't only
pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect
the beautification of the mind and what we are
after should be the perfect unity
of the
outward beauty and the inner beauty. As we all
know,so far as objects and
animals are
concerned, there is only beautiful appearance to be
mentioned, but to
us humanbeings, although the
outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is
much more important. This was confirmed by a
famous Russian writer in words much
like this:
person is not lovely for being beautiful but
beautiful for being lovely.
Here, I'd like to quote two typical instances
and I'm sure, my dear friends, from
them you'll
find out what real beauty is.
Recently I
learned from the radio an unpleasant incident
about a well known singer.
She is very
charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very
famous for singing the
LoveNot long ago,she
was invited to Zhejiang Province to give
performance. The moment she was to appear on
the stage, she suddenly asked for more
reward.
Worse still, after her request was satisfied, she
didn't begin to sing at
once. Instead,she took
her time to count all the money piece by piece.
Thus she
kept the audience waiting for half an
hour. So when she at last showed up and started
to sing of Loveman rose up from his seat and
shouted at her,don't
have any devotion of
love. You are not qualified to sing this song !
this,
the singer stopped singing and began to
shout abuses with her finger pointed at
the
man. At this time the whole audience burst into an
uproar.
How disappointed her keen
listeners were when they learned this! It is the
singer
herself who spoiled her beautiful image
in the eyes of others.
Now, I'm coming to
another true story. It's about a poor, ordinary
looking old woman.
She was a widow without any
children, living barely from hand to mouth by
picking
odds and ends from rubbish heaps.
However, she took in more than ten homeless orphans
successively and managed to bring them up.
Every day she labored from morning till
night.
In order to earn as much money as possible to
raise the children and to keep
them in
school, she even went to a hospital regularly to
sell her blood. She got
so weak for the loss
of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her
way home.
When asked why she chose to
burden herself with so many children, she smiled
and
simply answered,
Though the
old woman was poor materially, she was full of
affection and rich in
spirit. She was loved
dearly by her children. She was also highly
appreciated by
the local government, and truly
respected by people in her community.
Maybe you can't help wondering, makes that
ordinary woman so extraordinary?
It is nothing
else but her inner beauty, her true devotion of
love without any thought
of rewarding. What a
sharp contrast there is between the great woman
and the selfish
singer]
So,to answer
the question
beauty lying in one's heart of
hearts and embodied in his actions and deeds, that
is,the inner heauty!
My definition
of success
I am very glad to be here to share
with you my ideas of success. What is success?
It is what everyone is longing for. Sometimes
success would be rather simple. Winning
a game
is success; getting a high grade in the exam is
success; making a new friend
is success; even
now I am standing here giving my speech is somehow
also success.
However, as a person’s whole
life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated.
Is fortune success? Is fame
success? Is high social status success? No, I
don’t
think so. I believe success is the
realization of people’s hopes and ideals.
Nowadays, in the modern society there are many
people who are regarded as the
successful. And
the most obvious characteristics of hem are money,
high position
and luxurious life. So most
people believe that s success and all that they do
is
for this purpose. But the problem is wether
it is real success. We all know there
are
always more money, higher position and better
condition in front of us. If we
keep
chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy
us at last? Therefore, we
can see, to get the
real Success we must need something inside, which
is the
realization of people’ hopes and
ideals.
Different people have different
ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and
ideas
vary from one another. But I am sure
every success is dear to everybody, cause it
is not easy to come by, cause in the process
of our striving for success, we got
both our
body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are
enlightened by the most valuable
qualities of
human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of
responsibility. These
are the best treasures.
So now I am very proud that I have this
opportunity to stand
here speaking to all of
you. It is my success, cause I raise up to
challenge my
hope.
What is success?
Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I
am sure every
success leads to an ever-
brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe
in our
hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every
one of us, can make a successful life!
Wish
you all good success!
