: Learn English
Effectively
This is an English learning site
like none I have encountered. The focus
of the
site is motivation and techniques for effectively
learning Engli
sh. The authors of the site do
not see grammar exercises as the way. The
re
are reviews of techniques, pronunciation guides,
and accounts of how
the authors learned
English. Requires an intermediate reading level.
Developing
Listed as a web resource for
the developing language teacher, this site
provides newsletters about teaching, teaching
methodologies, lesson plan
s, and weekly
teaching tips. Newsletters and tips are archived,
but you
can also subscribe to receive these by
email. Developing is
a commercial site that
also offers email courses for language
teachers.
Good things for
elementary ESL classes. Includes lesson plans,
teaching
tips from a variety of sources, the
owner's pick of ESL resources, and d
iscussion
boards. There is also a discussion board where you
can ask the
site owner questions. (updated

English-Zone
A huge array of
activities for English learners and teachers.
There are
online activities as well as lessons
that can be reproduced for classroo
m use.
There is way too much on the site for me to list
it all here. All
skills are covered, and there
is also a phrasal verbs and a preposition
dictionary with exercises for reinforcement. Check
it out. (updated 10.

Real English
On the one hand, this is a commercial site
advertising an English learni
ng program
available on videocassette and CDs. On the other
hand, ten of
the beginner-level units are
available for free. Requires use of Real
P
layer, and some of the downloads are pretty
large. Includes a video clip,
exercises, and
vocabulary work. (updated 10.26.04)
An
extensive selection of resources for the ESL
teacher, from flashcards
to grammar lessons.
There's realtime chat, for students who want to
cha
t with others, and forums (although
somewhat sparse in postings as of th
is
listing). One of the best things are current news
articles, which are
available as readings and
audio recordings. Each article is accompanied
by various exercises.
Medical English
Resources
A unique resource for ESL students
who may be specializing in medical fi
elds. An
extensive selection of online exercises, including
cloze, passa
ge reconstructions, vocabulary,
and grammar. If a student wants to pract
ice
hisher English in the context of a medical
diagnosis, this is the p
lace.
Using
A compendium of quite a lot of different
things. There are discussions,
a bulletin
board, a grammar reference, online tests, and
more. Many more
materials than when the site
was first reviewed several years ago. (upd
ated
10.26.04)
Purely a discussion site with
threads for general English questions,
bus
iness English, and medical English. Lots of
posts and still going strong
after several
years. (updated 10.26.04)
Aardvark's
Yikes. The URL is only one letter different
from the previous listing, b
ut the content is
much different. Many exercises for language
practice,
resources for teachers and students,
guides to schools, message boards,
and lots of
links. (updated 10.26.04)
Mark's ESL World
A site with lots and lots of links, organized
into resources for teacher
s, students, and job
seekers. There are also chat and discussion pages.
Nothing unique to this site, but it pulls
together many things into one
place.
ESL
Webquest Projects
Webquests are cooperative
Internet-based research activities that
usuall
y culminate in a written or oral
research report. They involve research,
critical analysis of sources, and organization of
information found. Th
is web site focuses on
webquests and resources to support them. The
auth
or tries to break down webquests into its
various components, and while
the information
is not always easily processed, it is
comprehensive. The
se particular webquests are
targeted more to secondary and higher.
Grammar Grabbers
Grammar can be
deadly serious, so a little levity might be
useful. Bill
Cutler provides humorous but
practical grammar and style advance on his
website. Since it's humor, many ESL students
will need to be somewhat ad
vanced to get all
the jokes, but teachers may find the points
useful. (a

The Reading
Matrix: An Online Journal
The Reading
Matrix
is an international online peer-
reviewed journal that
focuses on issues of
reading and second language instruction. The
journ
al is purely online, but it is indexed in
ERIC. Articles are in PDF or H
TML format.
Access is free, and the journal also includes an
archive of
previous issues. Published twice a
year. (added 11.17.03)
English Daily
An
ESL site with a distinctively Asian bent. Grammar,
idioms, folk tales,
and lessons using
advertisements. I contacted the owner to find out
mor
e about the site, and apparently it is just
a work of love. (added 11.19.

Textalyzer
This is a website with a very
specific function. You input a block of te
xt
or a website, and the textalyzer analyzes the
textwebsite for comple
xity and reading level.
You also get syllable counts and average words
i
n a sentence. A potentially useful tool for
any teacher who wants to use
web materials
with their class. (added 05.14.04)
esl
Resource Center
A variety of lesson ideas for
all areas, from pronunciation to grammar.
The
mission statement emphasizes that the site is free
and developed by
ESL teachers. You may find a
useful lesson here for your next class. The
re
are also areas for chatting and posting job stuff,
but I didn't look
at those features. (added
05.14.04)
Vocaboly
This is a website for
a shareware program called Vocaboly. Using this
pr
ogram, you can review vocabulary through a
variety of exercises, tests,
and games. Of
specific interest to EFL students is its TOEFL
vocabulary.
You can download the program for
free and then pay for it if you find i
t
useful. Teachers and learners can customize the
program with their own
vocabulary. The program
is only available for Windows. (added

Encomium: Online TOEFL Practice
Encomium provides a 40-question sample
for the TOEFL Structure and Writt
en
expression_r_r_r test, a 15-item grammar quiz, and
a quiz of the day.
Challenging items. Click on
irections
of why your answer was correct or
incorrect at the end. (added 08.31.04)
English Maze
A very technologically
sophisticated site, using lots of Flash and
inter
activity. There is a diagnostic test, and
you can choose from general or
business
English. The free lesson that I sampled had a very
good cultur
al component (good reading
practice, too), some grammar explanation, and
a less than satisfying listening exercise where
you have to spell-out i
diomatic
expression_r_r_rs (somewhat frustrating because of
the speaker'
s pronunciation). I didn't sample
the whole site, so I don't know how mu
ch is
available for free. There is a fee for general
access. Still worth
a look. (added 08.31.04)
Rong-Chang Li's ESL Resources
Lots and
lots and lots of links. There's a smidgen of
original content.
The usefulness of this site
is in its categories of links. I found thing
s
I had never crossed before, so you will probably
too. Covers everythin
g ESL from jobs to
listening exercises. Lots of Google ads. (added
10.26.

Learning Vocabulary Can Be Fun
There are five online games for students to
practice vocabulary: word se
arch, crossword,
hangman, matching, and multiple choice quiz. The
vocabu
lary is grouped in categories. Since the
items are fixed, you would need
to check that
your lesson includes the vocabulary used. The
interfaces
are very good, with cute graphics
and sounds. (added 12.10.04)
UnivSource
Vocabulary Builder
Another vocabulary
builder, this one definitely geared for a much
higher
level. Students review vocabulary with
contextualized sentences and the
n choose an
appropriate antonym. Basically vocabulary drills.
Hosted by
a website that gives information
about US universities. (added 04.15.05)
Breaking News English
Ready to use lesson
plans that address speaking, reading, and
listening
skills. Each lesson plan has a
reading (intermediate and a low-advanced
version of each reading is available),
which serves as the basis for dis
cussion, word
development, and a variety of listening exercises.
A Word
PDF version of each lesson is available
(formatted for duplication) as w
ell as an MP3
of the reading to use for the listening exercises.
Compreh
ensive and ready to use. (added
07.18.05)
ESL City
Another site that
focuses on younger learners. There is a large
compendi
um of worksheets on topics such as
months, holidays, and vocabulary (a l
a picture
dictionary workbook sheets). I found two very
interesting thin
gs. First, you can email the
author to create customized worksheets from
your ideas. I didn't do this, but the author
emphasizes that this is a
omized printing
practice using your own text. For flash card sets,
you n
eed to register. Includes job information
and singles match-ups! (added
10.12.05)
Learn English with Teacher Joe
Teacher
Joe looks like a very nice guy (you can see his
picture in the c
onversation section), which,
coupled with the enthusiasm and slang, give
s
this site some of its appeal. Nothing flashy on
the surface, but the s
ite makes a lot of use
of audio files (dictations, readings, jokes) and
some programming to provide timed readings.
There are quotes, advice abo
ut taking the
IELTS (International English Language Testing
System), and
quizzes. The grammar stuff is
nothing to write home about, but the exte
nsive
use of audio files is a definite plus. (added
10.12.05)
Funny Lessons
This website is
targeted to Spanish speakers and provides humorous
stori
es along with translations of vocabulary,
key phrases, and verbs. Pedago
gically, there
is not much support for a language learner, but a
high-in
termediate learner might find the jokes
amusing, which might get himher
to learn the
new vocabulary. (added 12.05.05)
Fun Spelling
Facts
Humor is not an easily taught topic,
but students can readily relate to
the
frustration and absurdity of English spelling.
Espindle is a fee-bas
ed spelling tutor site,
but it also provides this compendium of poems,
s
ample sentences, and absurdities that you may
find a fun way to broach s
pelling (and by
extension pronunciation) in your class. (added
04.04.06)
Exam English
Exam
English provides information and practice sessions
on the major lan
guage tests required by
American and British colleges and universities
f
or non-native English speakers. These include
the TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, C
PE, CAE, FCE, PET,
KET and BULATS. While a good overview of what the
tes
ts are like, the feedback is simply correct
or incorrect, so a prospecti
ve student doesn't
know why the answer is correct or incorrect.

English Language Online
Tools
While ostensibly targeted to English
language learners, I find the site
of greater
potential use for teachers. The tools analyze a
text in a var
iety of ways. One highlights
ach
lary and pops up a list of synonyms
for the vocabulary when you move you
r mouse
over the word. A third analyzes the readability of
the text. Als
o includes a dictionary. (added
05.29.06)
Podcards
This listening
resource combines the concept of an audio
playability as an MP3 file on an iPod to form its
title. The
king countries - a bit of
history, celebrities, and city tours. Each
aud
io sample comes with a worksheet that
includes comprehension exercises a
nd a
transcript. The samples are divided into high and
low level. The sa
mples are British English.
(updated 03.22.07)
English Daily
The
focus is largely on vocabulary, with a little bit
of grammar thrown
in for good measure. The
reading selections provide glosses for
vocabula
ry items, with translations into
German when you click on the words them
selves.
Note that this site differs from the similarly
named site furthe
r up on this page. (updated
11.24.08)
Easy English Times
CATESOLers
are probably familiar with this newspaper
dedicated to ESL le
arners. While the newspaper
itself requires a subscription fee (includin
g
online access to the issue itself), the web site
to support the newspa
per provides some useful
resources. One of them is an archive of Susan
G
aer's technology columns. Another is a large
selection of student letter
s and
writing. The site also has tips for how to use any
newspaper with
a class. (added 10.02.06)
Short Story Radio
Not exactly an ESL
site, Short Story Radio provides audio versions of
or
iginal soft stories in small chunks of a few
minutes each. Definitely fo
r a more advanced
listening class, and for the teacher, the
disadvantage
is the lack of a printed text of
the stories. Two new stories are added
each
week, and there are two months' worth online now.
The readers are
British. (added 10.02.06)
Vocabulary Coach
Although research
suggests that vocabulary acquisition requires
context,
students still tend to like
vocabulary drilling for reinforcement. This
site provides a range of word-definition match
ups, a chance to compete
with others to be in
the Top 5, and an automated vocabulary flashcards
page which introduces new words and
definitions at a timed rate. Actuall
y aimed
for students preparing for high school tests such
as the SAT and
ACT, but ESL learners would
probably enjoy this workout as well. (added
