Morning Exercises-晨练
Morning
Exercises
Morning came. The bell rang. I
got out of the warm cotton-padded qui]t, quickly
dressed
myself, ran onto the playground, and
played*on the parallel bars.
A few
moments later, more people Came. They exercised
themselves in various ways. Some
ran around
the track. Some played on the horizontal bar.
Still. some played basketball,trying to
shoot
baskets.A group of girls were walking on the
balance beam by turn.A Couple of
strongly-
builtboys made graceful movements 0nthe flying
rings. Over there, several old men and
women
did shadow-boxing.
At exactly 6:30,
music came for people to do exercises to radio
music. For ten minutes all the
people on the
playground were seen bending down and
straightening up, turning left and right. It’s
really a beautiful sight to look at!

A letter to a Schoolmate
June 23, 2001
Dear Xiao Wang,
I am
delighted to know that you will be able to visit
me for a week during the National Day
holiday.
I am looking forward to your visit and to the
opportunity to catch up. Welcome to my
home in
Nanjing!
As you know, Nanjing has many
places of interest to see, to discover, and to
enjoy. Among its
historical sites are stone
city wall, the Confucius Temple with its
magnificent night view, and Dr.
Sun Yetsen’s
Mausoleum. With all its universities, Nanjing is a
cultural center, offering an
abundance of
artistic and musical performances. It’s also a
city of beautiful gardens and parks,
such as
the Xuanwu Lake Park. With all these features, we
will have a fun-filled week, especially
that
in early-October, there are many sunny and mild
days for outdoor activities. So, I would
suggest visiting these places first, and
deciding on the others as our week develops.
Finally, since at this time of the year the
weather gets a little chilly in the evening, I
would
suggest that you bring some warm
clothing with you. Also, as there will be crowds
of people at the
stations and on the trains,
you need to be very careful with your belongings!
Best wishes for a pleasant journey!
Yours,
Zhang Ying
Life is
Struggle
Everything in the world is in
constant struggle, ‘struggle’ in the sense of
competition in
natural selection among
organisms.
Animals and plants struggle
for their existence. Nature provides them with
weapons for that
struggle. Lions have
claws; fish have scales; roses have thorns. They
use their weapons for the
un-
avoidable
war of existence. Nature also orders us to
struggle;when we obey Nature, we win our
existence.
The result of struggle is
the evolution of a better order to surpass
others, one has to
devote himself to what he
does. If every individual does so. the society
will make progress.
Struggle is
inevitable. But we should struggle with
sportsmanship, not stand in the way of
others
in order to achieve our own success. It is Only by
struggling in such a way that mankind
will see
a world getting more glorious day by day.
Television
Television is playing a
very important part in our lives. But like other
things, it has both
advantages and
disadvantages.
In the first place,
television is not only a convenient, but a cheap
source of entertainment.
For a family of four,
for example, it is more convenient as well as
cheaper to sit comfortably at
home, with
unlimited entertainment available, than to go out
in search of amusement elsewhere.
All they
have to do is press a button, and they can see
shows of every kind, not to mention the
latest
political
discussions and exciting football
match. Some people, however, think this is just
where the danger
lies. The television viewer
takes no initiative. He is completely passive and
has everything without
any effort on his part.
Television informs us about current
events, the latest developments in science and
politics,
and offers an endless series of
instructive and entertaining programs. It could be
argued that the
radio can also perform this
service; but on television everything is much more
vivid. Yet again
there is a danger. We get
addicted to it, so dependent on its moving
pictures that it begins to
dominate our lives.
There are many other arguments. The poor
quality of programs is often criticized. But it is
a
great comfort to many lonely people indeed.
I think we must realize that television in itself
is
neither good nor bad. It is the uses to
which it is put that determine its value to
society.
