Like most people, I was brought up to
look upon life as a process of getting. It was not
until in
my late thirties that I made this
important discovery: giving away makes life so
much more
exciting. One discovery I made about
giving away anything in this world without getting
something back, though the return often comes
in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the
local post office delivered an important
special delivery letter to my home, though it was
addressed to me at my office. I wrote the
postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a
year
later I needed a post-office box for a
new business I was starting. I was told at the
window that
there were no boxes left, and that
my name would have to go on a long waiting list.
As I was
about to leave, the postmaster
appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our
conversation.
“Wasn’t it you that wrote us
that letter a year ago about delivering a special
delivery to your
home?” I said it was. “Well,
you certainly are going to have a box in this post
office if we have to
make one for you. You
don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We
usually get nothing but
complaints.

post office because ____.

a note would mean to the post office

C. he believed he would get something back by
doing so
D. the postman delivered an important
letter in time
3. When the author needed a
post-office box ____.

a note of appreciation

There are many different
cultures in the world, and in each of them the
children must learn a
great many things that
are expected of everyone who participates
effectively in that culture.
These things are
taken for granted by everyone who shares the
culture. Indeed, the children
begin to learn
them before their linguistic skills(语言技巧)are far
enough developed to
understand a verbal
description for what they are learning. This kind
of learning has sometimes
3
been called “imitation”, but that is
too simple an explanation for the complex
processes that go
on when a child learns what
is normal and expected in his own community. Most
of the rules are
communicated to the child
non-verbally, and he adapts to them as if no other
possibilities existed.
They are much a part of
him as his own body; he would no more question
them than he would
question the fact that he
has two hands and has two legs and two feet, but
only one head.
6. Children have to learn a
large number of things which ______ in their
culture,
A. are difficult for them to lean B
are regarded as especially important for them
C are regarded as normal by everyone D are
good for them to learn
7.. Children begin to
learn things by _______.
A. using their
linguistic skill B. understanding what they
are learning
C communicating effectively
D. imitating what others are doing
8.. The
learning processes for the children are ________.
A. complex B. simple C. normal
D. skilful
9. Children accept the
communication rules_______.
A. thoughtfully
B. unconsciously C. cautiously D. choosingly
10. . Which of the following statement is
correct?
A. Children always ask why they have
two hands.
B. Children learn all that they
are expected through imitations
C. Children
learn things faster than adults
D. Children
adapt to the communication rules naturally
