Speaking in public is most people’s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of
making fools of ourselves. ___51___
But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It’s just plain talking, and you talk
all the time. Although I’m basically shy, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and
television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like
musical talent. ____52____ Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not
ten or twenty. ____53____ And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there’s no
way your audience will. ____54____— how you are going to open, what major points you want
to make and how you’re going to close.

When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. ____55____ A strong
close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.
The standard length of a vaudeville (
杂耍
) act is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers
singing and dancing their hearts out couldn’t go on longer without boring the audience, what
makes you think you can?

A. Some people are born to be good at making speeches.
B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public.
C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech.
D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become.
E. If you can’t express in a sentence or two what you intend to get across, then your speech is not
focused well enough.
F. When you know where you’re headed, you can choose any route to get there.
G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you’ve got to get your ducks in a row.

Stress simply means the way a person reacts to things that happen to him or her. 36
For example, problems that have something to do with health such as getting injured, having
difficulties with a disease, etc. can make some people feel stressed. Young children may feel
stressed when they go to a new place. Other people could feel stressed because of not having
enough money.
37 Saying
work than you can possibly achieve can be stressful. That you feel you can achieve something
doesn't mean that you should take it on personally. After all, there are only a certain number of
hours in a day.
Laughter is indeed the best medicine for any problem including stress. Sometimes we get so
busy with all kinds of plans and endless meetings that we forget to have fun. 38 .
Hobbies also can be a great way to manage stress. 39 While hobbies like listening to music
and reading can take your mind off your worries, creative hobbies like painting, gardening and the

like can help in increasing your self-respect, too.
In a word, stress is like a leaking fountain. 40 Leaving it ignored will only make the
matter worse.
A. The earlier you fix it, the better.
B. So try and watch movies and shows that are funny.
C. There are different reasons why people get stressed.
D. They are activities you can do without the fear of being judged.
E. Speaking to people you believe in is a great way to manage stress.
F. Eating slowly and in a relaxed state of mind helps you manage stress.
G. Luckily, whatever causes, there are also different ways to deal with stress.

The Benefits of Keeping a Journal
If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem
simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for years.
Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. (36)

Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal.
It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later because
you didn't write it down

(37)

But then I developed the habit of writing down
every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If I'm away from my computer, I usually
write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the
journal in my computer

It helps you review all the lessons you've learned. By reviewing your journal, you can
quickly see the lessons you've learned and the ideas you've gotten. (38)

You can

use the ideas to push yourself forward.
(39)

After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far
you've gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas
you had in the past might have been realized today.
It helps you expand your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to express an idea,
you are thinking actively about it. (40)

In the end, you will expand your ideas.
A. I often experienced that myself.
B. It allows you to see your progress over time.
C. It trains you to express your thoughts.
D. Just use whatever tool you feel comfortable with.
E. Thinking actively helps you connect your idea to another idea.
F. And to be honest, I can't imagine what my life would be like without it.
G. Then you can do whatever necessary to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Researchers in the United States say eating less can slow the aging process of cells in the
body. The researchers studied mice, not people.
36 One group was able to eat as much as it wanted. The other animals in the other
group were limited to eat. Their diet had 35 percent fewer calories than the first group of mice.
The mice with the diet restrictions (
限制
) were more energetic and suffered fewer diseases.
They were not just living longer, they seemed to stay younger for a longer period of time. When
you restrict calories (in mice), there is a direct increase in lifespan—the average age of the animal.
37
But how? The researchers found that fewer calories slow down a natural mechanism in cells
called ribosomes (
核糖体
). Ribosomes are responsible for making important proteins in the cells.
But with fewer calories, they slow down. 38 This, in turn, keeps cells and the entire body
functioning well.
Earlier studies have suggested a link between calorie restrictions and slowed aging. 39

Calorie restriction as a way to slow aging has not been tested in humans. But the main
finding for people is the importance of taking care of our bodies. 40 And this may help us
make better decisions about what we eat.
A. The less we eat, the healthier we are.
B. Researchers studied two groups of mice.
C. This finding is good news if you are a mouse.
D. This gives the cells more time to repair themselves.
E. The findings help to explain how exactly our bodies age.
F. However, this is first to show how the ribosomes can influence aging.
G. Calorie restriction caused real biochemical changes that slowed down the rate of aging.

Radar is an electronic device that detects planes, ships, coastlines, landmarks, and even storm
clouds. The name radar comes from the first letters of the words “radio direction and ranging”. As
the human eye uses light waves to see, radar “sees” with radio waves. Without radar, planes could
___36___
In the 1800s it was discovered that radio waves could be reflected from objects. But
scientists did not make great advances in radar research until the 1930s, when the world was
threatened by war. ___37___ It has been used widely in almost every conflict since then.
Echoes make it possible for radar to work. When a beam of radio waves is sent out, it strikes
on an object and returns an echo. This echo is picked up by radar and recorded on a screen similar
to television screen. On the screen an observer sees a flash, or a blip. That shows the direction and
distance of the object. ___38___
Airport control towers use radar to guide planes in for safe landings. Almost all large ships
depend on radar to prevent collisions with icebergs or other ships. ___39___ Weather forecasters
“see” the size, direction, and speed of storms on radar screens. Astronomers can even use radar to
measure accurately the distance to the moon. Thus, the device has generated major advancements.

not land safely in bad weather and ships could not move safely in thick fog.

___40___ Huge radar antennas have been installed all over the United States. They guard us
against possible enemy attacks. We have ballistic- missile
(战略导弹)
warning systems that can
alert us to attacks when missiles are more than 1,000 miles away. Other radar systems warn us
against enemy aircraft and even spying space satellites.
A. Police track speeders in radar- equipped cars.
B. These measurements are now highly accurate.
C. The device was the result of wars.
D. During World War II many countries used radar effectively.
E. It is therefore especially valuable to shippers and travelers.
F. Today radar is used by commercial airliners and weather forecasters.

Bullying (欺凌) is a problem in many schools. Maybe lots of you have ever come across
school bullies. 36
Ignore the bully and walk away. It’s definitely not a coward’s response. Sometimes it can be
harder than losing your temper. Walk tall and hold your head high. 37
Hold the anger. Who doesn’t get really upset with a bully? 38 Bullies want to know they
have control over your emotions. Work out your anger in other ways, such as through exercise or
writing it down.
39 However you choose to deal with a bully, don’t use physical force. Not only are you
showing your anger, but you can never be sure what the bully will do in response. You are more
likely to be hurt and get into trouble if you use violence against a bully. You can stand up for
yourself in other ways, such as gaining control of the situation by walking away.
Talk about it. It may help to talk to a guidance advisor, teacher, or friend. 40 Talking
can be a good outlet for the fears and frustrations that can build when you’re being bullied.

B. This type of body language means you are not easily harmed.

Why we still need to read Dickens
Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens. Many
of Dickens’ works still sell well today. 36
As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often on my mind.
37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the
students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’s writing was a “tune-in-next- week” type of thing that
generated crazes. 38 “But why should we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The
answer I gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said.
The question annoyed me for years, for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never
with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but
also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from experiences of his
characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences.
39 But these are not exactly the reason why I read Dickens. My search for an answer
continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens’s
novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the
explanation I had sought for years.
Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times.
40 If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to
tell you about yourself.

A. Then a hand shot up.
B. I know that wasn’t really the reason.
C. And they are placed on outstanding shelves.
D. That question was never more troubling.
E. That’s why we still need to read him today.
F. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels.
G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens.

The rules about how to talk, eat and sit, which are highly limited, are observed in most
Western restaurants and homes. 36 Many Westerners have no idea how to act at the
Chinese dinner table. No forks or knives for them to use! The Chinese host makes great, sweeping
arm movements that go over large sections of the table, passing over both food and friends alike.
37 However, it leaves many foreigners at a loss for what to do.
In my childhood home, dinner was enjoyed with low voices, and the topics that we could
discuss were very limited. 38 If I had to leave the table to use the toilet, I had to excuse
myself without mentioning what it was that I was going to do. “May I be excused, please? I need
to wash my hands.I would say. My mother would say, “Sure.” My father would often play a
joke on me by saying,“ 39 ”
As for eating, we did it quietly. No eating noises were allowed. Everything must be done as
quietly as possible. If any sound was created by eating food or drinking, it would be considered as
bad manners!
40 He is to sit up straight with the recessive hand (usually the left) in one's lap holding
a napkin while the dominant hand (usually the right) holds the fork or spoon. The only time one is
allowed to have both hands on the table is when he is using a knife to cut something.
A. How one sits at the table is also prescribed(规定).
B. We were not allowed to talk about anything that made listeners uncomfortable.

C. Can't you think up a better excuse than that?
D. They’re completely different from what we find here in China.
E. Your hands don't look dirty!
F. The scene is fantastic.
G. In general they were all strictly forbidden topics.
