Long Beach, a 28-mile area of beach, lies in southwestern Washington, and is
generally called Long Beach Peninsula. Communities there take you back to old days

Camping
RV and tent camping aren't allowed on the beach. Camp fires are allowed within
100 feet off the beach, but must be away from the dry grass.
Swimming and other activities
Swimming is allowed, but you must be careful. The waters are very cold and
dangerous. Surfing is advised only for experienced surfers. Beach driving is allowed

at certain areas on the beach. The speed limit is 25 mph. Building sand castles,
digging sand to find something, riding bicycles and flying kites are also popular
activities in the area.

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually
news. Rather, it is an ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days
that hardly anybody pays heed to them. However, when the Lascaux cave complex was
discovered in 1940，the world was amazed.
Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived
thousands of years ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or
wild cats. Other images describe birds and, most noticeably, horses, which appear
in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task.
They did not limit themselves to the walls that can be reached easily but carried
their painting materials to spaces that required climbing steep walls or crawling
into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex.
Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of
water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux

caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside.
Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have
destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely
recognizable. To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963,
23 years after it was discovered.

My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day
for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many
things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading
isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’
t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers
for work, but not books. He’s busy so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes
a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is by no means the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people
would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different
and has their own interests, but I think there’re lots of benefits to reading, which
screen-based activities don’t have.

Firstly, it’s better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful
for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour
before bed, to get a good night’s sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world
—I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch
off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather
than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a
different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think.
Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches
you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’
s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking
or feeling—you really can be inside someone else’s head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you’re waking up, going to bed, eating
too much, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English

Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none
— that's because all of Jim's art is created on an unusual canvas(画布)— the soft

sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by
the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was
wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long
fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces
of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven't
changed — All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙子)and most importantly, his
lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the
canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of
