Text 1
The
term feminism first appeared in the late 19th
century in France and the Netherlands. Since
then its meaning has been widely debated and
people still often disagree about what it stands
for.
Here we look at its history and why the
word has become cloaked in controversy.
The
first significant feminist movement began in the
late 19th century in the UK with the
campaign
for women’s suffrage. Women gained the right to
vote (if they were over the age of 30)
in 1918
in Britain.
In the 1960s a second wave of
feminism erupted. People fought for issues such as
access to birth
control and equal pay.
A
third wave of feminism emerged in the early 1990s,
as an attempt to rectify the movements’
perceived failures.
10. cure-all
__________
2
Today, 71 percent of
American and 58 percent of British women would not
describe themselves as
a feminist, according
to a Guardian article. The figure is expected to
be lower for men, as
historically there have
been fewer men than women happy to identify
themselves as feminists.
To be a feminist
means that you believe women should have equal
rights to men. Many people
agree with this
ideal. But some have become wary of using the
term, because in response, people
may brand
you as radical or a man-hater. This is partly due
to the media’s portrayal of feminists as
bra-
burners that believe in female superiority.
Feminism has begun to see a revival, with
people debating whether we are starting to see a
fourth
wave.
Questions:
1. The first
significant feminist movement began in _____.
a. France b. Netherlands c. UK d. America
2. Which wave of feminism focused on birth
control and equal pay?
a. The first wave
b. The second wave
c. The third wave
d. The last wave
3. The writer’s attitude
towards feminism is_____.
a. neutral b.
postive c. negative d. critical
4. If you
are a feminist, you are likely to
believe_______________________.
5. As people
debate whether there will be a fourth wave of
feminism, it has begun to see a _____.
Text 2
Huang Yi is exploring the world.
The 26-year-old is an art teacher in an
*elementary school in
Hangzhou. She obviously
prefers traveling to answering *judgmental
questions on blind dates.
Huang has a sound
income, so instead of being influenced by
pressures to marry, like many of her
peers,
she plans to spend the next few years *backpacking
around Europe.
“I hope to *prolong the
carefree period between graduation and adult
responsibilities,” said Huang.
“I want to
discover my genuine value and true interests
before I settle down with a man.”
She
*epitomizes an expanding number of women *opting
to delay marriage in order to “take care
of
themselves first”.
By waiting to select the
“right” one, personal *fulfillment as well as
education and career
progression can take
*precedence over relationships.
Xu Anqi, a
sociologist and marriage expert from Shanghai
Academy of Social Sciences described
it as a
“revolution”.
In Xu’s eyes, post-1980s and 90s
is the first generation of young women who are
more “concerned
with building their lives as
individuals than going the traditional route of
marriage and having
3
kids”.
It’s hard to judge whether it is good or bad,
according to Xu, but we have to admit that “it
means
they can pay more attention to their own
emotions, and be more independent when considering
their future”.
According to a report by
Horizon Research Consultancy Group and Nankai
University, the median
age for an urban
Chinese woman to marry for the first time is 27.
In Shanghai and Guangzhou, the age was 29. But
30 years ago the average age for women to
marry was 22.8.
Experts say that with
economic independence young women do not need to
approach marriage as
a necessity.
Tan Lin,
secretary general of the Chinese Women’s Research
Society, says many young women
can stand on
their own feet and afford a better quality life.
They no longer need men to help pay
their
bills.
“They rely on themselves as earners,”
Tan said. “And as the only children in the family,
they’ve
been well-fed and *well-groomed so
they require less support from a *spouse.”
However, women’s *craving for independence
also stems from a sense of insecurity in
relationships as love and marriage become more
*fickle and unreliable in today’s world.
Figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs in
June revealed that the divorce rate has risen in
the
past seven years.
In the first quarter
this year, 5,000 families broke up per day,
witnessing a 17 percent rise from the
same
period last year.
This insecurity in
relationships, in the mean time, has also led to
an emphasis on material
*pursuits.
Materialistic women exist both on screen and in
real life.
Yu Xingrun, 24, an editor in
Shenzhen Media Group, wedded a well-off company
executive.
“Nothing is reliable except the
*tangible materials you gain from a relationship,”
she said.
“You alter yourself to make a man
happy, but he might *dump you even for the tiniest
excuse, so
it is better to dress up for
yourself, and live for yourself.”
According to
a report released by the Chinese Academy of Social
Sciences early this year, only 38
percent
women would agree to marry a man without an
apartment and a car.
But in fact, a large
number of women are ready to make a compromise
between seeking personal
fulfillment and
shouldering responsibility.
Diao He, 27, a
software engineer in Tencent Inc also wants to
fufill her career ambitions before
she *gets
hitched.
“Marriage is not my *priority because
I do not need it to survive,” Diao said.
“But
when I meet someone who can give me a better life,
I may change my mind to *take the
plunge at
any time.”
Questions:
4
6. Why is getting married no longer a
necessity for women?
7. Besides pursuit for
independence, is there any other reason why women
delay marriage? What
is it?
8.What does
the sense of insecurity in relationships has led
to according to this article?
9. Xu Anqi,
a sociologist and marriage expert from Shanghai
Academy of Social Sciences
described this
tendency as a __________.
10. In the first
quarter this year, the number of families that
broke up has increased by_______%
compared
with the same period last year.
