My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my
ankles was injured and this
meant not running
for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.
Yet,
I was determined to go ahead.
I
remember back to my 7th year in school. In my
first P.E. class, the
teacher required us to
run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do
either
well. He later informed me that I was
"not athletic".
B.6. C.5 D.11.
D.It shows
us a place
B.It shows us a lot of
The idea that I was "not athletic"
stuck with me for years. When I
started
running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle
against myself,
not about competition or
whether or not I was athletic. It was all about
the
battle against my own body and mind. A
test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I
dreamt that I couldn’t even find the
finish
line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to
prove something
to myself.
Shortly after
crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became
untied.
So I stopped to readjust. Not the
start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign:
"GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out
of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.
Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking
a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I
was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could
see my wife waving a sign. She is my
biggest
fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at
4 a.m. or questioned
my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But
I finished! And I got a
medal. In fact, I got
the same medal as the one that the guy who came in
first
place had.
Determined to be myself,
move forward, free of shame and worldly
labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a
"marathon winner".
4. A month before the
marathon, the author ____________.
A. was well
trained
B. felt
scared
D. lost hope C. made up his mind to
run
5. Why did the author mention the P.E.

?
A. To
acknowledge the support of his teacher.
B.
To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C. To
show he was not talented in sports.
D. To
share a precious memory.
6. How was the
author’s first marathon?
A. He made it.
B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize.
D. He walked
to the end.
7. What does the story mainly tell
us?
A. A man owes his success to his family
support.
B. A winner is one with a great
effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of
success.
C
It's at this time of the
year that marathon recovery, not marathon
training, starts to take center stage.
Research indicates that the muscle damage from
running a marathon can
last up to two weeks.
The research also indicates that muscle
soreness(肌
肉酸痛) is not a good indicator of
muscular healing. In other words, just
because
you aren't sore anymore doesn't mean that you are
fully healed. This
is the danger for marathon
runners: post-marathon muscular soreness fades
after a few days but minor damage within the
muscle cells remains. If you
return to full
training too soon — running more and faster than
the tissues
are ready for — you risk delaying
full recovery and the chance to get ready
for
your next goal.
The solution, it appears, is
to recognize(and accept) that the muscles
will
take a while to heal and to be prepared to take it
easy for the first
D. One is never too old to
learn.
couple of weeks(even
longer if you’re particularly sore after your
marathon).
While the research isn't very
promising when it comes to things to do to reduce
soreness and aid healing, a couple of concepts
appear to help. First,
providing gentle blood
flow to the area helps bring healing
nutrients(营
养) into the muscles and also helps
to remove waste products and damaged
tissue.
Walking and gentle massage(按摩) can help,
particularly in the first
few days after a
marathon. Once muscle soreness has significantly
reduced
(usually two to four days after the
race), light jogging can commence. Just
be
mindful to run very slowly.
No runner wants to
get super fit and then lose that during the
recovery
process. But since you must reduce
your training load following your marathon,
it
can be difficult as to how much and how soon to
insert running into your
post-marathon
training.
8.When should marathon runners
return to full training?
A.About half a month
after the competition.
B.A few days after
soreness disappears.
C.Before the tissues
recover completely.
D.Before the next game
draws closer.
9.How can marathon runners
reduce their muscle soreness?
A.Through family
care.
exercise.
C.Through medical
treatment.
tissue.
10.Which of the
following best explains “commence” underlined in
Paragraph
3?
A.Fit.
D.Mend.
B.Heal. C.Start.
D.By removing
damaged
B.By doing gentle
11.What can be a suitable title for the
text?
A.Reducing Training Load
C.Healing

Sport is
not only physically challenging, but can also be
mentally
challenging. Criticism from coaches,
parents and other teammates, as well
as
pressure to win can create too much anxiety or
stress for young athletes.
Stress can be
physical, emotional, or psychological and research
has
indicated that it can lead to burnout.
Burnout has been described as dropping
or
quitting of an activity that was at one time
enjoyable.
The early years of development are
critical years for learning about
oneself. The
sport setting is one where valuable experiences
can take place.
Young athletes can, for
example, learn how to cooperate with others, make
friends, and gain other social skills that
will be used throughout their lives.
Coaches
and parents should be aware, at all times, that
their feedback to
youngsters can greatly
affect their children. Youngsters may take their
parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and
find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents
should also pay attention that youth sport
participation does not become work for
children. The outcome of the game
should not
be more important than the process of learning the
sport and other
life lessons. In today’s youth
sport setting young athletes may be worrying
more about who will win instead of enjoying
themselves and the sport.
Following a game
many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and
find faults
with youngsters’ performances.
Positive support should be provided
regardless
of the outcome. Research indicates that positive
support
motivates and has a greater effect on
learning than criticism. Again,
B.Soreness with
Sports
D.Recovery after
criticism
can create high levels of stress, which can lead
to burnout.
12. An effective way to prevent
the burnout of young athletes is____________.
A. to make sport less competitive
their
mental stress
C. to increase their sense of
success
sport more challenging
13.
According to the passage, sport is positive for
young people in
that____________.
A. it
can help them learn more about society
B. it
enables them to find faults in themselves
C.
it can provide them with valuable experiences
D. it teaches them how to set realistic goals
for themselves
14. Many coaches and parents
are in the habit of criticizing young
athletes____________.
A. so as to put more
pressure on them
B. in order to make them
remember life’s lessons
C. believing that
criticism does good to their early development
D. without realizing criticism may destroy
their self?confidence
15. According to the
passage parents and coaches should___________.
A. pay more attention to letting children
enjoy sport
help children to win every game
C. train children to deal with stress D.
B.
D. to make
B. to reduce
enable children to understand the positive
aspect of sport

Sports performance can be influenced by many
different things. 16
There are many
physical factors(因素)that play a part in sports
performance. 17 The natural talent and
strength of the players will
make a
difference. Also,it is important to get enough
sleep before you are
in a sports event. 18
Eating good meals is also important. When you
are hungry, you cannot perform the same. You
might be thinking about food
when you should
be thinking about the game.
Of course,the more
a team or a player practices, the more likely they
are to perform well. The same person with the
same physical abilities might
just become
better as he practices.
Researching your
competitor can matter a lot in sports performance.
Knowing their strengths and weaknesses can
help you adjust how you play to
give yourself
a better performance against them. 19 If you
can figure
out where to hit the ball in tennis
that would confuse your competitor,
for
example, then this can help you score points.
20 If someone is very pessimistic about a
game,for example,and is
sure that he will
lose, then he might increase his chances of doing
so. If
he is very nervous then he might be
thinking about that instead of focusing
on the
game. If he is focused then he might do
better,achieving what he didn't
even realize
he could. His confidence can also affect how the
other team views
him.
A.It is important to
be aware of these factors.
B.It is necessary
to get to know your competitor and yourself.
C.Also, there are ways to play something
smartly and do better.
D.If you are tired, you
may not perform as you normally would.
E. If
you have practiced enough to keep fit, you should
have a rest.
F. If someone is in good shape,
then of course he will perform better.
G.
There are many psychological factors that can play
a part in how well
you perform.
