It was a cold and

crashed into a car, then hit a tree.
The force was so great that it shunted(使移开) the

the tree on fire.

Driving in

seat belt was squeezed into the console(操纵台).

The World Health Organization(WHO)
says the widespread use of sugar in food products
and drinks is
a major concern in many areas.
So WHO officials are calling on governments to
require taxes on sugary
drinks. The officials
believe the taxes also would reduce the risk of
health problems resulting from
obesity(肥胖).
Obesity is a condition in which the body
stores large, unhealthy amounts of fat. A new
report says that
in 2014 more than one-third
of the adults in the world were overweight, and
500 million were considered
obese. The United
Nations agency estimates that in 2015, 42 million
children under age 5 were either
overweight or
obese. Almost half of these boys and girls live in
Asia and one-fourth in Africa.
The U.N. agency
blames unhealthy diets for a rise in diabetes
cases. There are more than 400 million
cases
of the disease worldwide. The WHO says 1.5 million
people die from it every year. It says the use of
sugar in food products and drinks is a major
reason for the increase in rates of obesity and
diabetes.
Temo Waqanivalu is with the agency.
He told VOA that taxing sugary drinks would reduce
consumption and save lives. Waqanivalu noted
that Mexico passed a 10 percent tax on sugary
drinks in
2014. He said by the end of the
year, there was a 6 percent drop in the
consumption of such drinks. Among
poor people,
the number of people who consumed sugary drinks
dropped by 17 percent.
珍贵文档
The WHO
says people should limit the amount of sugar they
consume. It says they should keep their
sugar
intake to below 10 percent of their total energy
needs, and reduce it to less than 5 percent for
improved health.
are taxes on sugary
drinks required?
A. To limit their use and
popularity.
B. To readjust the economic
structure.
C. To warn people to change their
lifestyle.
D. To ensure the market’s diverse
development.
do the figures in the second
paragraph suggest?
A. Adult obesity is ignored
at present.
B. Obesity is a severe worldwide
problem.
C. Obesity can block economic
development.
D. Obesity is most serious in
developed countries.
does the example of
Mexico prove?
A. Tax policies are unfair to
the poor.
B. Sugary drinks are a threat to
health.
C. The poor consume more sugary
drinks.
D. Taxing sugary drinks makes a
difference.

The media has negative
effects on the physical and psychological well-
being of society. People
spending hours in
front of a television or surfing the Internet
experience eye problems. Lack of physical
activity leads to obesity problems. The media
influences public opinion and impacts the choices
that people
make. The media has led to a
general opinion that thin is in and fat is out.
This makes the overweight feel
out of place.
They are ready to starve themselves to lose
weight, which has led to increasing cases of
eating
disorders.
The media has, in its
own way, changed people’s outlook on life. It is
the interface (界面) through
which millions look
at the world outside. The media claims to describe
the
media show the truth. With the intention
of stressing their point or grabbing greater
attention from the
masses, the media
exaggerates (夸大) things to a certain degree. Not
everyone is able to filter out that
element.
Most believe everything to be real, especially
kids and teenagers.
Media sources are so many
in number and all of them so convincingly make
their point that it is hard
to distinguish
between right and wrong. Thus while a certain
amount of exposure to the media is essential

for introducing ourselves to the
world outside, excessive exposure, uncontrolled
access and belief without
thought won’t lead
us anywhere. They will only make the negative
effect of the media more obvious.
Media
descriptions give rise to stereotypes, affecting
your mindset. Advertisements carry subliminal
(潜意识的) messages influencing buyers’
psychology, or carry direct messages that bear a
negative
influence. It’s not possible to
protect yourself completely from the effects of
the media, even if you limit
the exposure. And
there are so many things you see around you,
without choosing to watch them. The only
way
to protect yourself from them is to not allow them
to influence you. Don’t take media descriptions at
their word. Don’t believe in them without
thinking. Think twice before following or falling
for anything.
does the media affect people’s
health?
A. It misshapes people’s concept of
beauty.
B. It disturbs people’s sleeping
routines.
C. It makes people addicted to junk
food.
D. It raises people’s awareness of
exercise.
word can replace the underlined

A. Accept. B. Convey. C. Remove.
D. Interpret.
does the author advise people
to do in the last paragraph?
A. Limit their
exposure to the media.
B. Don’t be too curious
about things around.
C. Develop their self-
confidence and self-control.
D. Use their own
judgment properly in face of the media.

As warming continues, scientists warn the
oxygen content of oceans across the planet could
be more
and more reduced, with serious
consequences for the future of fish and other sea
life.
31 One is the simple fact that as water
gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved (溶解的)
oxygen.
The other reason is less obvious. The
entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface —
either from the
atmosphere, or from
photosynthesizing algae floating at the top of the
sea. 32
Global warming is expected to reduce
the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater
lighter.
That’s because in a warmer world we
can expect more rainfall and more melting(融化) of
glaciers, icebergs,
and ice sheets. 33 The
extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also
make surface water expand
and thus make it
lighter still. 34 Instead, more of the oxygen
will remain near the surface, where it will
be
used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.

A low-oxygen ocean may become an
inescapable feature of our planet. A team of
Danish researchers
wondered how long oxygen
levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our
carbon dioxide emissions
to zero by 2100. They
determined that over the next few thousand years
oxygen levels would continue to
fall, until
they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would
slowly return to the oceans, but even 100,000
years from now they will not have fully
recovered. 35
A. It’s not known why the
oxygen level of oceans has reduced.
B.
Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop
in ocean oxygen.
C. Fresh water’s inpouring
will make the water at the ocean’s surface
lighter.
D. The oxygen then spreads to the
deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.
E. Global warming has caused the reduction of
the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.
F. The
light surface water will be less likely to sink so
the deep ocean will get less oxygen.
G. If
they are right, we have every reason to worry
about the major effect it has on sea life.

When I

with the checkout though. My problem or should
I say concern was about Pamela. She looked tired
and
was under a lot of stress as she quickly
moved from one checkout to the next. It’s a bit of
a fire-fighting
job.
I told Pamela that
she needed to slow down. I told her she wasn’t

she was working. I told her that we, the
customers, could wait and it was very bad for her
health to
be putting herself under such
pressure. I told her that our expectations were
not as hard as the ones she set
for herself.
Pamela told me she would slow down. I could tell
she was touched that not only did I notice her
stress but I chose to talk to her about it and
was concerned for her health. I gently told her
things had to
change. I told her I would be
looking out for her in future to see if she had
