31. The two already met once over dinner Monday night, shortly after Obama arrived in the frigid
Chinese capital from Shanghai. National security adviser James L. Jones described that meeting
as an “informal dinner discussion” in which the two leaders discussed “the evolution and
histories of China and the United States.”
32. These days computer technology allows us to have a conversation with various pieces of
equipment, for example a washing machine. With satellite navigation in cars, it's the other way
round: the equipment talks to us. “Drive five point three kilometres, then turn left.” says the
lady in the machine.
33. America's exceptionalism finds it natural to condition its conduct toward other societies on
their acceptance of American values. Most Chinese see their country's rise not as a challenge to
America but as heralding a return to the normal state of affairs when China was preeminent.
