Your lover is all that I need. I wish you enough,
too, Daddy.”
They kissed and she left …
The father walked over towards me. I could see
he wanted and needed a cry. He came over to

“When you were saying goodbye I heard you
say, ‘I wish you enough.’ May I ask what that

He began to smile, “It’s a wish
that has come down from my great-great-
grandparents. And my
parents used to say it to
me.”
He stopped for a moment and looked up
as if trying to remember it. He smiled even more.

wanting the other person to have a life full of
enough good things.”

Dear Larry,
It was lovely to hear from you again and to
know that things are going well with you.
Thanks for telling me all about the Chinese
Moon Festival. It sounds like you enjoyed a great
getting together in Inner Mongolia. It
reminded me of the many festivals we took part in
in South
Africa when we worked among
the Xhosa people (Mandela's people)
there. The
people there kept many sheep, as well as cows. But
beef
was expensive and was only for very
special occasions(场合).
Often, as we arrived
for a funeral, we would see a sheep being
killed. The ceremony(仪式) would take two or
three hours. After that
________________. With
plenty of food, such as the rice, potatoes,
cabbage and salads, there would be mutton(羊肉)
(boiled, of course)
on our plates as well. We
also ate mutton on very many happier family
occasions.
By the way, I came across these
pictures and thought you'd like to
see them. A
Chinese girl named Rita presented the Chinese
jackets to Joan and me on the day of
her
graduation(毕业). We tried them on in the university
car park. Photographs were taken though
I was
wearing my kilt, which is a kind of skirts for men
in Scotland! It seemed to be such a break
away
from the norm(常规) that some suggested that I might
start a new fashion(潮流).
We wore the jackets
to a formal dinner on board the ship in August
when we visited the
Norwegian fjords. Some
Chinese ladies we had not seen before came and
spoke to us. They were
most interested as to
where we had got such attractive clothes.
Joan
joins me in sending you our warmest wishes. We
both look forward to hearing from you
again.
Yours sincerely,
Ken and Joan

Should
Children Be Allowed to Get Bored?
Children
need time to stand and stare(凝神). They should be
allowed to get bored so that they
can develop
their ability to be creative.
Children are
expected by their parents to be reading a textbook
all the time. However, research
shows that it
may hamper the development of their imagination,
while boredom(无聊) can give
them chances to be
creative.
Boredom and loneliness are often
connected, but a writer named Meera Syal said
boredom had
helped her in developing her mind.
She told researchers about her childhood. Having
few things to
do, Syal often talked
with her neighbors. She also tried to do things
like learning to make cakes.
“But importantly,
I thought and wrote a lot, because I was bored,”
Syal said. She kept her diary to
fill her time
with short stories and poems she made up.
Grayson Perry, an artist, grew up in a family
with little money. He enjoyed himself by making
up stories, drawing pictures for his stories
and reading many books in the library. Bored but
free,
he spent hours looking out of the
window, watching the changing clouds and seasons.
Perry filled
up his free time with what he
liked. He became creative, because he could think
freely.
Dr. Belton said boredom could be an
uncomfortable feeling, but some young people
cannot
deal with that boredom creatively, so
sometimes they may break a classroom window, or
drive a
car out for a mad race.
Usually,
when children have nothing to do, they would turn
on the TV, the computer, or the
phone. Their
time on these things has increased, yet they need
to have time to think about their
experiences
through play or just watching the world around
them.
It is this kind of thinking that can
make people more creative. On the other hand, the
TV or
phone may cut short the thinking time.
That can be harmful to the development of
creativity. “For
developing the ability to be
creative,” Dr. Belton advised, “perhaps we need to
stand and stare, and
stay away from the
Internet from time to time.”

A. Syal kept her diary to fill her

B. Perry grew up in a family with little
money.
C. To develop children’s creative
ability, they should be allowed to get bored.
D. Sometimes those young people who cannot
deal with boredom will break a classroom
window.
45. The purpose of this passage is
to________.

thinking creatively and freely

to turn off the TV and spend more time with family
