A local grocery store here has been remodelled and not a single one of the changes is good for
those of us who shop there. The grocery aisles(通道)have been rearranged with some going in one
direction and others going in another. The aisles have been pushed closer together, making it harder
to get through them. It seems like all of these changes have been for the purpose of slowing the
shoppers down so they will make more impulse(冲动)buys. As I walked through the store today, no
one was smiling and everyone was unhappy about it.
The change that bothered me the most, however, was in the check-out aisles. Only a few
cashiers were left working with huge sections changed into self-scanning check- outs. It saddened me
to see this. I knew that people were probably going to lose their jobs because of this change. I got in
a cashier aisle and patiently waited while I saw some other people struggling to figure out how the
self- scanning machines worked. I swore at that moment never to use one myself even if I had to wait
longer every time I shopped there.
When I finally arrived at the front of the aisle, I saw the cashier was someone I knew. I greeted
her with a smile. She smiled back with warmth and kindness that touched my soul. We chatted
happily while she scanned and bagged up my groceries. I felt a friendship and a connection with her
that warmed my heart. I wished her well before I left.
Machines can do a lot for us, but there are many things they can’t do. They can’t smile or love.
Only we can do that. It is time that we should realize that profits aren’t more important than people
and that machines aren’t more important than us. It is time that we should learn that loving each
other and this world is what life is all about.
24. What may account for the store’s changes?
A. To make more profits. B. To satisfy the shoppers.
C. To offer more products. D. To make shopping easier.

1

25. What’s the result of the use of self-scanning machines according to the author?
A. It will attract more customers.
B. It has reduced the cashiers’ burden?
C. It has brought shoppers more convenience.
D. It will make many peoples unemployed.
26. How did the author feel when he met the cashier?
A. Calm. B. Glad. C. Angry. D. Surprised.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Machines or Us? B. Why Use Machines?
C. Are Changes Necessary? D. How Does the World Change?

C
The Himalayas, which stretch some 2, 900 kilometers between India, Pakistan, China, and Nepal,
are the world’s tallest mountain range. In addition to Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain by
peak elevation standing 8, 848 meters tall, the range also features several other mountain peaks over
8, 000 meters. It is the only mountain range to have mountains over 8, 000 meters — the runner- up
is a mountain range in South America, whose tallest peak is just 6, 962 meters tall.
Millions of years ago, these mountain peaks didn’t exist. The Asian continent was mostly
complete, but India was an island floating off the coast of Australia. Around 220 million years ago,
around the time when Pangea was breaking apart, India started to move northwards. It travelled
some 6, 000 kilometers before it finally hit Asia around 40 to 50 million years ago. Then, part of the
Indian landmass(陆块)began to go beneath the Asian one, moving the Asian landmass up, which
resulted in the rise of the Himalayas. It’s thought that India’s coastline was denser and more firmly
attached to the seabed, which is why Asia’s softer soil was pushed up rather than the other way
around.
The mountain range grew very rapidly in comparison to most mountain ranges, and it’s actually
still growing today. Mount Everest and its fellows actually grow by approximately a net of about a
centimeter or so every year. The Appalachian Mountains in North America, which developed some
300 million years ago or more, is actually decreasing in peak elevations as it erodes(侵蚀).
The continued growth in the Himalayas is likely due to the Indian tectonic(地壳构造上的)plate
still moving slowly but surely northward. We know the plate is still moving in part because of the
frequent earthquakes in the region.
28. What do the underlined words “the runner-up” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. The fastest. B. The lowest.
C. The most popular. D. The second tallest.
29. What led to the formation of the Himalayas?
A. The long coastline of India.
B. The fast movement of India.
C. The firm attachment of Asia to the seabed.
D. The meeting of India with the Asian continent.
30. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Most mountains in the world grow rapidly.
B. The Appalachian Mountains have soft soils.
C. Mount Everest will be about one meter taller in a century.
D. The Appalachian Mountains was once taller than the Himalayas,
31. What will happen to the Himalayas in the future?

1

A. It will continue to grow. B. It will move southwards.
C. It will attract more tourists. D. It will have fewer earthquakes.

D
A new study has found that getting adequate sleep is the key to improving academic
performance.
Jeffrey Grossman, who led the research, wasn’t trying to find the association between sleep and
grades when he handed out Fitbits to the 100 students in his class. Instead, the professor hoped the
popular wrist-worn device, which tracks a person’s activity , would show a correlation(关联)
between physical exercise and academic achievement.
As part of the research, a quarter of the participants were enrolled in an intense fitness class
specially created for the study. After the term ended, Grossman was surprised to find that there was
no measurable difference in test performance between the group that had been physically active and
the group that had not.
However, the study provided a surprising insight. As the researchers were analyzing the large
amount of data, they noticed an interesting trend coming from the participants’ sleep patterns. There
was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and his grades on
exams.
Even more interestingly, was also not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night
before a test. Grossman says, “It turns out that a good night’s sleep doesn’t correlate at all with test
performance. Instead, it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters
most.”
The time when students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed
in the early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a
higher-performing student. “When you go to bed matters,” Grossman says. “If you get seven hours
of sleep, no matter when you get that sleep, as long as it’s before certain times, say you go to bed at
10, or at 12, or at 1, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance
starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn’t everything. ”
32. Why did Grossman do the research?
A. To call on students to have enough sleep.
B. To find the connection between physical exercise and grades.
C. To show lack of sleep increases a person’s risk of getting diseases.
D. To prove enough sleep is important to students’ academic performance.
33. How did the researchers get the result of the experiment?
A. By analyzing data. B. By researching online.
C. By referring to students’ reports. D. By asking students’ parents.
34. What is the most important for students to get good grades?
A. Working out every day.
B. Staying up late to study.
C. Sleeping well during learning days.
D. Getting enough sleep the night before a test.
35. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Going to bed early is important.
B. The total time of sleeping matters most.
C. The quality of sleeping determines everything.
D. Students perform well by going to bed at 1 am.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting
out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with
complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner
who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection
of money for the less fortunate people in our school district. “Christmas is a season of giving,” I told
my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By
contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy
people. We will start the collection tomorrow. ”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten
except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk.
Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. “I don’t need milk for lunch,” he
mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn’t help
sharing the incident that had taken place. “I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting
ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal. “Yes. ” he nodded. “And we
might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families
in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it. ” As I
gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list.
Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答案卡的相应位置作答。
On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard’s family.

The next day, I had a special class for Willard.

Text 1
M: I read in the newspaper that the novel you are reading is excellent.
W: I’ve also read some negative reviews.
Text 2
W: I thought the librarian said we could check out as many books as we need with our library cards.
M: That’s right, but not those reference books.
Text 3
W: Do you know if our food is ready? We’re going to be late for the theatre if it doesn’t come soon.
M: I’m sorry, ma’am. The kitchen is backed up. It ought to be ready soon.
Text 4
M: The thing to keep in mind is to be clear and brief when you write your report.
W: Oh, before I forget, when is it due, Professor Lawrence?
M: It’s due a week from today.
Text 5
W: Billy, can I please have your science homework?
M: Um, I’m really sorry but a friend came over last night, so I only had time to finish half of it. Plus,
I left it all at home.
W: Billy, you’d better have it done by tomorrow.
Text 6
W: Isaac, something’s wrong with the shower. It won’t turn off completely.
M: Yeah? Maybe the shower head needs replacing.
W: Oh, it’s probably just a washer or something that needs to be replaced. Can you take a look at it?
M: Me? I’m not a repairman. I don’t even know what’s wrong with it.
W: I know. But you’re always so good when the TV needs to be fixed. You know, when the screen
needs adjusting.
M: Yeah, well, that’s an emergency!
Text 7
M: Remember how I applied for those jobs overseas last month?
W: Yeah. Did you get a reply?
M: Last Friday, one of the companies e-mailed me. They’ve offered me a job in Paris! I’ll go to Paris
tomorrow.
W: Wow! Congratulations! What about your current job? Have you told them you’re leaving?
M: No, not yet.
W: They might be upset. I’ll be hard to find someone to fill in your position at such short notice.
M: Well, it’s none of my business. I’m telling the manager at work that my bags are packed and I’m
leaving today.
W: Well, I hope you have a good time in Paris.

1

M: Well, you must be doing something wrong. To be honest, I’d say what you really need is an
overall change of lifestyle.
W: Yeah, you’re probably right but I’ve been so caught up in the work deadlines and keeping the
house going that whenever I’m upset or tense I head straight for the fridge.
M: Well, habits like that are hard to break. What I’m saying is that instead of always thinking about
your weight, you could try to improve your health and increase your energy levels.
Text 9
M: How was the party last night, Rebecca? I’m so disappointed I couldn’t make it.
W: Most of it was good, but...
M: How come? .
W: Well, one of my school friends was there, Julie, and she remembered that I used to be really good
at doing magic tricks. Well, I haven’t got around to doing it for a long time. I’m really out of
practise.
M: What happened at the party?
W: Well, Julie announced really loudly that I could do magic tricks, and they made me perform. I
hate being the centre of attention. They all stared at me. I was so bad at it, and it took me about
five minutes to remember how to do it again.
M: How come you don’t practise magic tricks more?
W: It’s not a skill that you can put to use very often. But I think I should practise from time to time
to avoid a scene like that again. I looked so stupid!

and the first books. And now, 2, 000 years more — we can see some of the races of the first Olympic
Games in Greece in 500 BC. And back another 1, 000 years, I can hear the sound of the first metal.
This is 2, 000 BC. Here we are at our time stop for today — 4, 000 years ago. You can unfasten your

The Most Beautiful Place in My Heart
As a 17-year-old teenager, I’ve been to many great cities, among which Luoyang is the most
beautiful one in my heart.
Located on the north bank of the Luo River in western Henan Province, Luoyang is surrounded
by mountains on three sides, high in the west and low in the east. At the end of 2019, Luoyang had a
population of more than 7. 1 million.
I love Luoyang so much due to the fact that as one of the four ancient capitals of China,
Luoyang has a civilization history of 5, 000 years. What’s more, the number of its heritage sites is
second only to Beijing in cities of China. And its famous tourist attractions include Longmen
Grottoes, Baima Temple, Guanlin and so on.
[参考范文]
On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard s family. On entering his house, I was surprised to find a
barely empty room with a broken bed and a dirty sofa. It seemed as if the house had been
unoccupied for a long time. Willard told me his mother died and that his father was missing when he
was five, leaving him to live with a sick grandma. When asked why he had given the two quarters,
Willard mumbled, “I just want to help others by contributing my milk money.” I couldn’t help
bursting into tears, thinking I should help him break his silence. On my way home, I made up my
mind to do something for the kind-hearted boy so that he could really be a member of our class.
The next day, I had a special class for Willard. I shared his story with the whole class and said,
“Now, on behalf of the people in need, I should say thanks to Willard, you are great!” After a silence,
all the students clapped, saying “Willard, you are great!” and they walked to him and hugged him
tightly. Willard felt uncomfortable at first when hugging them. He gave a bashful smile as his
classmates complimented his contribution. Finally, he opened his arms wide to embrace his friends.
A friend relationship was built and Willard’s silence was broken by a smile on his face.
