Tradition
Definition
The term
‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ are expressions of
values which helps us in observing
the process
of social and cultural transformation in societies
as they pass from the ‘primitive’
to ‘pre-
industrial’ to ‘industrial’ and ‘post-industrial’
phases of social development.
Pros
Point
1. Peace of Mind: Time has seemed to speed up,
distraction is everywhere, and as a whole,
modern society has all but lost its ancient
connection to its spiritual nature and to the
Earth. In
light of this, many people are
searching to reconnect with the sacred and many
have adopted
different spiritual paths such as
yoga, meditation, First People’s ways, Eastern
philosophies,
Taoism, Buddhism, and countless
others, searching for a sense of peace to this
life we all share
here together.
of
ritual:Japanese people will say:
“itadakimasu!”(我开动了) before having a meal.
When asking why they are saying this, they
always say that it is a tradition which help them
to
feel at ease and enjoy the food.
2. guideline:Tradition lays down guidelines
for simple and even complex decision making and
leaves us free to utilize our time more
effectively. Take the complex decision of marriage
for
example. If there is the tradition of
marriage in the same or related clan, then the
decision is far
easier and acceptable. It’s
advantages are well seen in Indian society, where
there is a tradition
of arranged marriages.
This has proved to be more successful than love
marriages in the west,
with fewer cases of
divorces and broken homes. It also has a lot of
emotional as well as
ornamental value, which
is practiced very proudly by our armed forces.
Some of these traditions
have been passed down
from the British army, for example, the pulling of
jeep by fellow officers
on the retirement of a
senior officer, or the ceremonial parade, flag
hoisting etc. These are all fine
traditions
that should be maintained at all costs.
3. Health:Artemisia apiacea Hance protects
against the malaria parasite and developing an
extraction method for its therapeutic was
inspired by the ancient TCM classic Manual of
Clinical Practice and Emergency Remedies by
TCM master Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD
317- 340)
4. Emotional Value:It also
has a lot of emotional as well as ornamental
value, which is practiced
very proudly by our
armed forces. Some of these traditions have been
passed down from the
British army, for
example, the pulling of jeep by fellow officers on
the retirement of a senior
officer, or the
ceremonial parade, flag hoisting etc.
Mid
al choice:The traditional Indian
father wants to see his son get married in a
dhoti(腰布)
and kurta(无领长袖衬衫).
The son
would prefer a western outfit on the day of
marriage as it is in harmony with the latest
trends in fashion.
But is this
necessarily a progressive thought?
Neither is
it a question of being regressive or progressive.
It is a matter of individual(个人的)
choice.
Cons
Point
1. Narrow Minds
“Traditions are essential, for alone our
vision is too narrow. Together our vision widens
and
strength is renewed”.
2. Tradition
keeps us from advancing
Tradition is about
thinking about how people in the past lived and
using that as a guideline to our
lives. ... if
we keep trying to live in the past, we distance
ourselves from the gradual change
happening in
society. Tradition can often be perceived as good
purely because of nostalgia(怀旧).
If it was so
good back then, then why has society changed?
People often think that the familiar is
better
and that different is bad.
l custom:Sati
system was a tradition that made the women die
with the husband. If it
had continued now, the
country would have lost many talented women.
's social statue:Traditions tell that women
should wear Indian dresses; they should
treat
the husbands as God and so on. People moved on
from the old traditions and that’s why
women
are an equal earning partner in today’s life.
titions:Superstitions(迷信) are run under the
name of traditions like sneezing before the
start of the work can lead to failure of work.
:Racism is a kind of tradition followed in
many countries. Obama broke the racial
barriers to become the first black US
president.
logically Primitive:Traditional
societies are technologically primitive. They have
little
amount of control over nature and
environment. These people are practically at the
mercy of
the nature.
Mid
al
