Passage One

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning.
If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the
call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same
meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call
during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call
communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U. S. A. guests tend to feel they
are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended (发送) only three or
four days before the party date.
But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world it may be considered
foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date
more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts
of the world.
Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently;
promptness (准时) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt,
they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U. S. no one would think of
keeping a business friend waiting for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is 5
minutes late is expected to make a short apology.
21. “The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00p.m.” Here
“attached” means ______.
A. taken

C. given
D. bought

22. Supposing one wants to make a telephone call at midnight, this would mean ______.
A. the matter is less important
matter is somewhat important
C. the matter is not important
D. it is a matter of life and death

23. According to this passage, time plays an important role in ______.
A. social life
e life
C. communications
D. transmission

24. The best title for this passage is ______.
A.“The Voices of Time”
B.“The Saving of Time”
C.“The Importance of an Announcement”
D.“Time and Tide Wait for No Man”

25.According to the passage, the author of the article may agree with which of the follow

statements?
A.It is appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before the party
date in the U.S.
B.It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before the
party date in some cultures.
C.It is best for one to make telephone calls at night because it costs much less.
D.If one is less than 5 minutes late,he has to make a short apology.

Passage Two
How we look and how we appear to others probably worries us more when are in our
teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life.Few of us are content to accept
ourselves as we are,and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion.
Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress
in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do,they tell us,we will be able to meet
new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without
embarrassment (窘迫).
Changing fashion,of course, does not apply just to dress.A barber today does not cut
a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to,and girls do not make up in the same way as
their mothers and grandmothers did.The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles
and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are
odd or dull.
What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity(需求)or
just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion.Take hats for example. In cold
climates, early buildings were cold inside,so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In
recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry
by not wearing hats:more American men followed his example.
There is also a cyclical(周期循环的)pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and
America, short skirts became fashionable. After Word War Two,they dropped to ankle
length. Then they got shorter and shorter until the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few
more years,skirts became longer again.
Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be.It is no longer necessary to
dress like everyone else.Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you
like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the
“untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of me top
fashion houses.
At the same time, appearance is still important in certain circumstances and then we
must choose our clothes carefully. It would be foolish to go to an interview for a job in a law
firm wearing jeans and a sweater; and it would be discourteous (无礼貌的) to visit some
distinguished scholar looking as if we were going to the beach or a night club.
However, you need never feel depressed if you don’t look like the latest fashion photo.
Look around you and you’ll see that no one else does either!

26. The author thinks that people are ______.
A. satisfied with their appearance

ned about appearance in old age
C. far from neglecting what is in fashion
D. reluctant to follow the trends in fashion

27. Fashion magazines and TV advertisements seem to link fashion to ______.
A. confidence in life
al dress
C. individual hair style
D. personal future

28. Causes of fashions are ______.
A. uniform

C. unknown
D. often inexplicable (无法解释)

29. Present-day society is much freer and easier because it emphasizes ______。
A. uniformity
ity
C. informality

30. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Care about appearance in informal situations.

Passage 1
Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and
each course which he attends gives him a credit. which he may count towards a degree. In
many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each
lasting for one semester .A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks;
while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each
semester.
Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year.
It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer is also
possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course,
though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and
therecord is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a
constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for
participation in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much
enthusiasm. Students who advise the academic authorities usually perform the effective
work of maintaining discipline. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for
example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of
students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who
has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him
later in his career.

Passage 2
Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be
called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a
daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”.
That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body
temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others
it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to
such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible
explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening.
Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles
mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better.
Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must
stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up
later than you want to. If our energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to
do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get
up steam (鼓起干劲)and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and
stretch.
Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the
troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible,
do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for
your sharper hours.
46. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably________.
A. he is a lazy person
B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C. he is not sure when his energy is low
D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.
D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.
