passage 2

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people
are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own
appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds:
what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I
wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A
person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves,

and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way
people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced
by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are
very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also
find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re
just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while
self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people
can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self- confidence.
Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people
to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.

Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal
ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full
potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

1. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?”
(Para. 1) B

A. Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.

B. People’s shyness make them care too much about their appearance and actions.

C. It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.

D. Shy people think they are different from others.

2. According to the writer, self-awareness is ___D____.

A. a good quality

B. the cause of unhappiness

C. harmful to people

D. a weak point of shy people

3. That shy people react to a compliment in such a way is ____B___.

A. good B. unreal

C. very reasonable D. harmful

4. Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage? C

A. Shyness helps us to develop our potential.

B. Shyness enables us to understand ourselves better.

C. Shyness can block our chances for a rich life.

D. Shyness has nothing to do with lack of self-esteem.

5. It can be inferred from the passage that shy people ____B___.

A. should find more of their weakness

B. should understand themselves in the right way

C. had better ignore their weakness

D. can get rid of their shyness while maintaining low self-esteem

Passage 3

A poor young artist came to the gate of the subway station. He put his hat on the
ground and took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground. Then he adjusted
the violin and began playing.

Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with people, who were all
attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George
Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it soon.”

After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed
through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you.
You did come here. I knew that you’re an honest man and would certainly come
here.”

The story turned out to be this :George Sang bought a lottery ticket a few days
ago. The awards opened yesterday and he won a prize of $$500,000. So he felt very
happy and he took out 50 dollars for the wonderful music played by the young man.
However the lottery ticket was also thrown in.

Later someone asked the violinist: “At that time you needed to pay the tuition fee
and had to play the violin every day to make the money. Then why didn’t you take the
lottery ticket for yourself?”

The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily; but if I
lose honesty I won’t be happy forever.”

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should
always be with us. If we bear ourselves in a deceptive and dishonest way, we may
succeed temporarily. However, from the long-term view, we will be a loser. Such
people are just like the water on the mountain. It stands high above the masses at the

Passage 4

The origin of language is a mystery. All we know is that men, unlike animals,
invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that

they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs,
called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be
written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words lies in their associations - the things they bring up before
our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer
we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and
the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something
increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these
thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming
and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a
master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and
which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore
learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our
speech silly and vulgar.

1. The origin of language is __D__.

A. a legend handed down from the past

B. a matter that is hidden or secret

C. a question difficult to answer

D. a problem not yet solved

2. What is true about words? D

D. They are mysterious.

3. The real power of words consists in their __D__.

A. properties B. characteristics

C. peculiarity D. representative function

4. By “association” in the last paragraph, the author means __B__.

A. a special quality B. a joining of ideas in the mind

C. an appearance which is puzzling D. a strange feature

5. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true? A

A. He is no more than a master of words.

B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music.

C. He can move men to tears.

D. His style is always charming.

Passage 5

Earth is a planet composed of rock and metal. Along with water, all life on earth
requires oxygen, carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and hydrogen. We are often referred to
as carbon-based life forms. It is believed that these basic materials would be needed
for the emergence of life elsewhere in the universe but some scientists argue
otherwise, suggesting that life could form from different elements and materials.

Life on Earth shows a wide diversity in forms, yet many contain basic
similarities.

Life is an ongoing process so it seems probable that life exists elsewhere in the
universe in a multitude of different forms and stages of progression. Just as it is
possible that life exists elsewhere in forms similar to the bacteria and viruses found on
Earth, it is also likely that life forms may exist that are more advanced than humans.
Even though many planets have harsh conditions in which life as we know it would
not be able to exist, we should keep in mind that there are many creatures on Earth
that can exist in harsh climatic conditions. Life could exist in the smallest organic
molecules or in a form completely unknown to humanity that could go totally
unrecognized. We assume that life could not exist on the giant gaseous planets, but it
could very well be possible that some form of life completely beyond the scope of our
imaginations may exist.

We don't know whether life in any form exists on other planets elsewhere in the
universe. Although we have made great strides in our search for extraterrestrial life
and the exploration of space our technology is still in its infancy in the cosmic scheme
of things.

1. The scientists speculated that there may be life on Mars __D___.

A. because of its temperature

B. because of the existence of water on it

C. because of its thin atmosphere

D. because it is similar to Earth in many ways

2. What does the word “diversity” mean in Para. 2? B

A. Similarity. B. Variety.

C. Possibility. D. Change.

3. Which sentence is NOT true according to the passage? C

A. It seems possible that life exists elsewhere in the universe.

B. It is likely that there are life forms which are more advanced than humans.

C. There can't be lives elsewhere in the universe because many planets have harsh
conditions.

D. There are much to be explored and found for the galactic exploration.

4. What does the expression “in its infancy” mean in Para. 4? D

A. Becoming an infant. B. At young age.

C. In the process of growing up. D. In the initial stage.

5. What's the author's attitude towards the possibility of life on other planets? C

A. Positive. B. Negative.

C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.

Passage 6

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you
study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will
meet a fair weather friend. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck,
but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a
good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding,
honesty and reliability .

A good friend, above all else, tries to understand how another person is feeling.
He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the
other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good
listener.

At the same time, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others.
He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept
me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If
he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be
there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not
run away from me.

his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the

If you travel by air across the center of Africa or South America, you fly over
forests for thousands of kilometers. These great forests are the oceans of trees. There
are thousands and thousands of different kinds of plants and animals.

However, the world’s forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting
down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say
that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or 30 years. What will happen if they
disappear?

If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the
world. In a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops
