, a broker is an independent wholesaling middleman
that brings buyers and sellers together and
provides
market information to either party.
Most brokers work for sellers, 3 a small
percentage represent buyers.
Brokers have no
authority to set prices. They simply negotiate a
sale and leave it up to the seller to accept or
4
the buyer's offer. They also furnish
considerable market information 5 prices,
products, and general market
conditions.
Because of the limited services provided,
brokers receive relatively small commissions— 5
percent or less. 6 ,
brokers need to
operate on a low-cost basis.
Food brokers 7
buyers and sellers of food and 8 general-
merchandise items to one another and bring
them together to complete a sale. They are
well 9 about market conditions, terms of
sale, sources of credit, price
setting,
potential 10 , and the art of negotiating.
They do not actually provide credit but sometimes
store and deliver
goods. Brokers also do not

generally represent the seller, who pays their
commission.
Food brokers, 13
manufactures' agents, operate in specific
geographic locations and work for a limited
14 of food producers within these areas.
Their sales force calls on chain-store buyers,
store managers, and
institutional purchasing
agents. Brokers work 15 with advertising
agencies. The average commission for food brokers
is 5 per cent of sales.

Taxes, Taxes and More Taxes
Americans
often say that there are only two things a person
can be sure of in life; death and taxes. Americans
do not
have a corner on the
Taxes consist
of the money which people pay to support their
government. There are generally three levels of
government in the United States: federal(联邦) ,
state, and city; so there are three types of
taxes.
People who earn more than a few
thousand dollars must pay a certain percentage of
their salaries to the federal
government. The
percentage changes from person to person. It
depends on their salaries. The federal government
has a
graduated income tax, that is, the
percentage of the tax(14 to 70 percent) increases
as a person's income increases. With the
high
cost of taxes people are not very happy on April
15, when the federal taxes are due.
The second
tax is for the state government: New York,
California, North Dakota, or any of the other
forty-seven states.
Some states have an income
tax similar to that of the federal government. Of
course, the percentage for the state tax is lower.
Other states have a sales tax, which is a
percentage charged to any item(项目) which you buy
in that state. For example, a
person might
want to buy a packet of cigarettes for twenty-five
cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in
that state, then the
cost of the cigarettes is
twenty-seven cents. This figure includes the sales
tax. Some states use income tax in addition to
sales tax
to raise their earnings. The state
tax laws are diverse(多样) and confusing(混淆).
The third tax is for the city. This tax comes
in two forms
:
property tax (people who own
a home have to pay taxes on it)
and excise
tax, which is charged on cars in a city. The
cities use these funds (资金) for education, police
and fire departments,
public works and city
buildings.
Since Americans pay such high
taxes, they often feel that they are working one
day each week just to pay their taxes.
People
always complain about taxes. They often protest
that the government uses their tax dollars in the
wrong way. They
say that it spends too much on
useless and impractical programs. Although
Americans have different views on many issues
(问题), they tend to agree on one subject: taxes
are too high.

death market.

In October, 1961, at
Crowley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, an old, deaf
gentleman named William E. Hoy stood up to
throw the first ball of the World Series. Most
people at Crowley Field on that day probably did
not remember Hoy because he
had retired ()
from professional baseball 58 years earlier, in
1903. However, he had been an outstanding player
and the deaf
people still talk about him and
his years in baseball.
William E. Hoy was horn
in Houckstown, Ohio, on May 23, 1862. He became
deaf when he was two years old. He
attended
the Columbus Ohio School for the deafAfter
graduation, he started playing baseball while
working as a
shoemaker.
Hoy began playing
professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh
(Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888,
he
started as an outfielder(外场手) with the old
Washington Senators. His small figure and speed
made him an outstanding base
runner. He was
very good at stealing bases during his career. In
the 1888 major league season, he stole 82 bases.
He was also the
Senators' leading hitter in
1888. Hoy was clever; he threw right-handed and
batted left-handed. On June 19, 1889, he threw out
three batters (击球手)
at the plate from
his outfield position.
The arm signals used by
judges today to show balls and strikes began
because of Hoy. The judge lifted his right arm to
show that the pitch was a strike, and his left
arm to signal that it was a ball.
For many
years, people talked about Hoy's last ball game in
1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the
Pacific Coast
Winter League. It was a
memorable game because Hoy made a wonderful play
which won the game. It was a very foggy
night
and, therefore, very hard to see the ball. In the
ninth inning(棒球的一局), with two men out, Hoy managed
to catch a fly
ball to make the third out in
spite of the fog. Los Angeles defeated their
opposition and won the game.
After he retired,
Hoy stayed busy. He ran a dairy farm near
Cincinnati for 20 years. He
also became a
public speaker and traveled giving speeches.
Until a few years before his
death, he took 4
and 10 mile walks several mornings a week. On
December 15, 1961,
William Hoy died at the age
of 99.

Everyone
Will Get Old
Until late in the 20th century,
most Americans spent time with people of old
generations. Now mid-aged Americans
may not
keep in touch with old people until they are old
themselves.
That's because we group people by
age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-
care center, our 13-year-olds in
school and
sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-
citizen homes. Why?
We live away from the old
for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the
old to get rid of fears for aging (衰老)
and
dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love
disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it's so hard
that we stay away
from the people who need us
most.
Fortunately, some of us have found our
way to the old. And we have discovered that they
often save the young.
A reporter moved her
family onto a block filled with old people. At
first her children were disappointed. But the
reporter
baked banana bread for the neighbors
and had her children deliver it and visit them.
Soon the children had many new friends,
with
whom thev shared food, stories and project.
The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was
in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a
baby. She was immediately
surrounded. People
who hadn't gotten out of bed in a week suddenly
were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had
seemed asleep wake up to watch the child.
Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and
cure.
Grandparents are a special case. They
give grandchildren a feeling of security and
continuity. As my husband put it,
Grandchildren speak of attention they don't
get from worried parents.
and my grandparents
told me to slow down,
with grandparents: they
are quieter, calmer, more trusting.

The Golden
Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is in San
Francisco. The bridge crosses part of a bay and
leads to roads going north. Until
1937, there
was no bridge at this place. The only way across
was by ferry boat. The space seemed too big for a
bridge. But
one man, Joseph Strauss had always
wanted to build a bridge there. Finally, he got
his way.
Joseph Strauss drew up plans for the
new bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge would be a
suspension bridge (悬索桥).
The roadway would
hang from giant cables—thick ropes of steel. At
each end of the bridge, huge towers would hold up
the
cables.
Work on the bridge began in
1933 and went on for four years. Workmen climbed
hundreds of feet above the icy water.
A net
was stretched under the bridge to catch any
workers who might fall. Some did fall into the net
and were rescued.
Joseph Strauss's dream came
true on May 28,1937, at a cost of $$ 35 million.
Long lines of cars crossed the bridge for the
first time on that day.
The Golden Gate
Bridge was one of the largest and most magmficent
suspension bridges in the world of that time. It
spans a channel at the entrance of San
Francisco Bay. The bridge, which has a total
length of 8,981 feet (2,737meters),
connects
northern California to peninsula (半岛) of San
Francisco.
Its towers are among the first
buildings seen from ships coming near San
Francisco. These towers stand on either side
of the bridge, about 1,125 feet (343 meters)
from the ends. They hold up the two steel cables
36 inches (93 centimeters) in
diameter, from
which the bridge hangs. The part between the
towers is 4,200 feet (1,280 centimetres) long, one
of the world's
longest spans. The floor is
about 200 feet ( 67 meters ) above the water, and
90 feet (27 meters) wide. It has a six-lane road
and sidewalks.

Read the
following text and choose the most suitable
heading from the list A—F for each paragraph.
There is one extra
heading which you do not
need.
A. Officials supported the idea
B.
The reason why some cyber cafes were opened
C.
Who put the idea into practice?
D. Some cyber
cafes have been opened in high schools
E. Who
suggested the idea?
F. What can students do in
the cyber cafe?
1.
Cyber Cafe computer
centers are found in many cities around the world.
Now, a few American high schools are
opening
these centers. For example, a high school in the
state of Maryland began operating a Cyber Cafe
last March. All
students at Bethesda-Chevy
Chase High School in Bethesda can use the Cyber
Cafe.
2.
School officials say it
especially helps students who have no computer or
cannot use the Internet at home. The
officials say 13 percent of the students at
the school are from poor families. Many students
have arrived in the United States
from other
countries only recently. Students in the school's
program for learning English speak 23 other
languages.
3.
The idea for a Cyber Cafe
at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School began three
years ago.
At that time, officials were
planning to restore the school building. Parents
interested in technology proposed a Cyber Cafe
even though schools in the area had suffered
budget cuts, so that all students would have the
best chances to learn.
4.
Officials in
the area supported the idea. So did an
organization called the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High
School
Educational Foundation. The foundation
includes parents, teachers, former students, and
business community and other
leaders. Over two
years, the foundation collected money for a Cyber
Cafe and other new computers. It received more
than
$$170,000.
5.
The Cafe now has 16
computers, a printer and a scanner. School
official Ann Hengerer says students use the
Internet to
complete research. They also write
homework and required papers on the computers. In
addition, they can send and receive
electronic
mail. That is especially helpful for the many
students who have family members in other nations.
The Cyber Cafe
also serves a social purpose.
Visitors can stop by for a drink of coffee, tea or
hot chocolate.
Dieting
Read the following
passage and choose the most suitable heading from
this list for each paragraph of the passage. Note
that there is one extra heading.
A.
Being on a diet is a torture (折磨)
B. I feel
better with vegetarian food
C. I lost weight
after dieting
D. I began dieting for the sake
of health
E. Dieting simply causes endless
worries
F. Dieting does more harm than good to
one's health
You can always recognize
dieters from the sour expression on their faces.
They spend most of their time turning their
noses up at food. They are forever consulting
calorie charts, gazing at themselves in mirrors,
and leaping on to
weighing-machines in the
bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing
battle against spreading hips, big bellies and
double chins. How miserable dieters are!
7.
I began making some dietary and
lifestyle changes during my second year of college
and have been eating this way ever
since. I
like the way I feel when I don't eat animal foods
so much more than the pleasure I used to get from
eating them. I
have much more energy; I need
less sleep; I feel calmer; I can maintain an ideal
body weight without worrying about how
much I
eat, and I can think more clearly.
8.
During my first year of college, I gained
forty pounds when I began throwing the javelin (标
枪). For the next twenty years, I carried all
of this extra weight and kidded myself that I was
in good shape since that's what I
weighed in
college. Now that I've lost all that extra weight,
I feel great! People say all the time,
eating
cheeseburgers or this or that?
9.
All the
horrible things you eat instead of food leave you
permanently dissatisfied. A complete food it may
be, but not
quite as complete as juicy steak.
So at least three times a day you will be exposed
to temptation. How miserable to watch
others
tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while
you eat a water biscuit (薄脆饼干) and sip unsweetened
lemon juice!
And if hunger just proves too
much for you, in the end you will devour (狼吞虎
咽) five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a
sitting (一口气). Then things will turn out to be
even worse.
10.
I went on
diet when my doctor told me that my blood pressure
tended to be high. Only at that time did I realize
the danger of
being overweight. Since I began
making dietary changes in 1982, eating this way
has become increasingly accepted. I don't
feel
I've lost something after dieting. Instead, I've
got something valuable. That is good health.
