Peer pressure
Peer pressure refers to
the influence exerted by a peer group in
encouraging a
person to change his or her
attitudes, values, or behavior in order to conform
to
group norms. Though the idea
that“everyone’s doing it” can sometimes
strengthen our sense of competition, it can
also mislead us to leave our judgment,
or our
common sense behind.
No one can avoid peer
pressure, however, as we grow, we learn to deal
with it
properly. To begin with, we must be
true to ourselves. Paying attention to our
own
feelings and beliefs about what is right or wrong
will help us make our own
decision. Inner
strength and self-confidence keep us standing firm
instead of
being affected by the external
influences. Secondly, be careful when choosing
friends. We may try to get together with
friends of similar values, interests or
backgrounds to reduce the pressure from
different minds. What’s more, when we
find the
peer pressure is overwhelming, we might as well
turn to someone we
trust for help.
Though
we may feel annoyed when caught in peer pressure,
we can learn a lot
through coping with it.
Eventually we will reach the balance between our
own
beliefs and external influences.

Internet and Privacy
Internet
is playing a more important role in our work with
it, giving and
receiving orders; we
communicate with it, through e-mail, on-line
phone, or MSN;
we entertain with it, playing
games, watching movies, and enjoying music; we
study
with it, looking for and exchanging
information; we live with it, doing shopping and
s, we can log on to the Internet on campus, in
a bar, at home, or in a
hotel, almost anywhere
anytime.
However, if we want to enjoy the
service, we have to register with many
websites, typing in our name, age, gender,
address, and telephone number. And
these
become part of contents stored on-line. With the
“professional” hackers,
despiteful and
harmless, as well as irresponsible web site
administrators, the
information might be
stolen and made open and even sold. A case in
point is the
junk mails.A better example is
the privacy of pop stars.
As a result, while
enjoying the great convenience and speed of
Internet, we
are called sometimes by
strangers, visited by promotions and junk ads, and
cheated by someone unexpectedly. Therefore,
think twice before deciding to
register on-
line.
displaying
their wealth on the Internet
Nowadays, it is
not rare to see people displaying their wealth on
the Internet.
Some post pictures of luxury
goods, such as brand clothes and bags, luxurious
automobiles or jewelries. Some write about
their experiences in which a lot of
money is
spent.
People have different responses to this
phenomenon. Some say that it is
people’s right
to share their possessions or experiences with
others on the Internet,
as long as the things
are legal and the experiences real. However, some
criticize
that the rich people are too
arrogant. What’s worse, there are also a few who
are
not actually rich but put fake photos only
to satisfy their vanity.
In my opinion,
sharing is a good thing, and it is exactly the
spirit of the Internet.
But people should make
careful choice on what they are sharing. After
all, showing
off is not very nice, not to
mention faking.

Online Course
Online
course, as a new teaching method based on computer
and
Internet,allows teachers to give classes
from a distance away. It is becoming more
than
popular in colleges and universities, and acts as
an effective complement to
traditional
teaching.
However, opinions on it differ
from teachers to students. Generally,
teachers
support it for two reasons: Firstly, online course
can be conducted at
home or office and this
offers great convenience to teachers. Secondly,
online
course releases teachers from repeating
the same contents since the video or audio
material can be played time and again.
However, many students have opposite standpoints:
In the first place, with
online course, they
lack face-to-face communications with teachers and
their
confusion cannot be solved instantly. In
addition, the computer system cannot be
guaranteed to work stably all the time. What’s
more, they do not have 100 percent
confidence
in their self-discipline without teachers being
around to supervise.
Personally, with the
college students growing up, if the traditional
teaching
method and the modern ones like on-
line course can be combined together, more
fruitful education is sure to be realized.
Studying abroad
Nowadays more and more parents are eager to
send their children to study
abroad before
they finish high school by whatever means and at
whatever cost.
It is quite understandable for
parents to send their children to study overseas
because they place high expectations on their
children. They are encouraged by the
success
stories of those who have completed their overseas
study. With the
development of economy,
companies and institutions at home are giving more
and
more emphasis on overseas experiences,
too.
Consequently, pursuing overseas study
became a kind of short cut in gaining a
better
future. Moreover, there is still one underlying
reason for this rush-economic
reason. The
rapid economic progress in the past few years in
China has enabled
more and more parents to
afford the huge cost for their children’s overseas
study.
As for me, overseas study is surely a
helpful way to get both advanced
knowledge and
necessary experiences, but overseas study at an
early age is neither
necessary nor beneficial.
The students may be too young to either tend for
themselves or think for themselves.
I do
think that overseas study can contribute to one’s
self-improvement, but
it’s better to be
pursued after one has finished his college study
at home, when he
is more capable of learning
and living on his own.

My View on the Student Loan System
China’s Ministry of Education has carried out
an education loan system for
years. The
government grants interest-free loan to millions
of college students
from poor families every
year.
However, some student debtors fail to
repay their loans, even after graduation.
It
is the national priority to push the whole
education, in which students from
poverty-
stricken families have the right to be offered the
money and the fair
opportunities.
Our
government has a duty to provide and protect a
comprehensive and
high-quality education for
its entire citizen. Accordingly, the students have
to pay
back the money during and after their
school days. Credit is supposed to be
presented as well as money. Otherwise, they,
the loan defaulters, lose their credits,
which
is not the result of our education.
To be
honest is the best policy. Students learn the
technical and survival skills,
and they, first
of all, have to learn to be a human.
Lectures on campus
Nowadays, there
are great varieties of lectures on campus. Take
Beijing Normal
University as an example, the
past decade has witnessed a sharp increase in the
number of lectures a student attended per
year, ranging from art to economy,
psychology
to world issues.
Generally speaking, good
lectures benefit students a lot. To begin with,
lectures can broaden students' horizons and
cultivate their interests in different
fields,
which will improve their qualities both mentally
and academically. What's
more, lectures make
students' life more colorful and enjoyable,
helping them
acquire and absorb knowledge more
quickly.
As for me, with these merits,
lectures are just complementary and subordinate
to our study. If students spend too much time
attending lectures, their regular
study will
be disturbed. Therefore, lectures should be done
within a certain limit so
that students can
strike a proper balance between instructive
lectures and study.

Peking Opera Be Set as Part of
Compulsory Courses
Recently, the Ministry of
Education launched a new reform, specifying that
Peking Opera be set as part of the compulsory
courses at primary and middle
schools. The
reform has caused an enormous amount of
controversy in society.
Many people in favor
of it agree that it may contribute a lot to
promoting
traditional Chinese culture. But
even more people are against it for they think it
is
not quite feasible in teaching practice.
As to this issue, my view is that Peking Opera
should step into classroom,not as
a compulsory
course, but as an optional one. On the one hand,
teaching Peking
Opera at school could
popularize traditional art so that more people
will know and
love it. On the other hand,
however, to some extent, setting a new compulsory
course will add to students’ academic burden
which has been already heavy
enough.
Therefore, by setting Peking Opera as an optional
course,students may
have more freedom to
decide whether to take it or not.
In a word,
promoting and developing traditional culture
cannot merely depend
on“revitalizing Peking
Opera”. The key lies in improving the cultural
awareness of
the whole nation substantially.
self-help
traveling
More and more college students
choose self-help travelling rather than
arranged tours when they plan to travel. The
reason may be that by analyzing the
route,
booking cheaper hotels and taking cheaper
transportation means 2.W by
themselves, they
can save a lot of money.
Convenient and
economical as self-help traveling sounds, it still
has some
potential problems Perhaps the most
important one is the safety hazard. Being
alone without a group or a tour guide, a
traveler may be helpless in face of danger,
i.e. robbery, wild animal attacks, etc. In
addition, they are more likely to be at risk of
getting lost when traveling alone in a strange
city or in the remote countryside.
In my view,
self-help traveling can be exciting and
challenging which is worth
trying. However,
before setting out alone on a tour, travelers
should make good
preparations. Besides, they
should hear security in mind all the time and keep
ia
touch with their friends or relatives. By
doing so a they can enjoy the pleasure of
exploring a strange city safe and sound.

More and more
children are showing up at school each September
with cell
phones. Many parents buy their
children a cell phone because it is a nice safety
measure. It gives those working parents a
little sense of control and security to
know
when their children are off campus and on their
way home.
But having a cell phone might be a
problem. Parents may find themselves
facing a
frightening bill at the end of the month. The
reason: chatting on the phone
and sending text
messages can soon become the favorite pastime of
preteens and
teenagers. Worse still, cell
phones in schools can lead to classroom
distractions,
text-message cheating and
inappropriate photographs.
Knowing their
children can always be reached is reassuring for
parents. But
before buying their child a cell
phone, I think parents should decide if the child
is
really capable of managing his or her own
phone. Besides, parental control must be
exercised in the use of the phone. For
example, they should set limits on how long
the child is allowed to stay on the phone.

When early man invented
clothes, he probably want ed to keep warm. I am
sure he never intended that it should become
as elaborate as it has become today.
For many
a year, traditional clothes and modern clothes
have been in competition
as to which of them
make the wearer more beautiful. But it does seem
that a lot of
modern clothes are simpler and
more practical. Perhaps we are moving back to the
age of cavemen who wore clothes for practical
purposes.
Modern clothes are definitely more
practical as again traditional clothes.
Almost
all people now wear modern clothes. Nowadays even
more and more
people wear casual clothes.
Jeans are everywhere except at formal parties.
T-shirts
are common, too. They look comfort
able and fashionable. However, there are also
a lot of people who take the trouble to dress
well informal clothes like shirts,
trousers
and suits. I find them smart, too.
But then,
it is important to hold on to our topic. In my
opinion, each type of
dress has its place.
Modern clothes are ideal for most situations,
while casual
clothes are worn more freely. As
to traditional clothes, they must be worn for
special occasions.
