三、Passage One(总题数:1,分数:10.00)
While
popular in the U.S., the April Fool's Day
tradition is even more prevalent in European
countries, such as France and Great Britain.
Although the roots of the traditional tricking are
unclear, the French and the British both have
claims on the origin of the celebration.
One
theory holds that the first April Fool's Day was
on April 1 of the year when King of France
instituted the new calendar. This new system
placed the day that had formerly been the first
day
of a new year on April 1. Many people
were reluctant to adjust to the new calendar and
continued
to celebrate New Year's Day on what
had become the first day of April. Thus, they
became the first
April Fools.
An English
story about the day, however, holds that it began
sometime during the 1200s. At the
time, King
John of England was in the habit of making a road
out of nearly every path he walked
regularly.
The citizens of one particular farm village were
aware of this. To avoid having their
green
meadows and pastures disturbed with one of the
king's roads, they built a fence that prevented
the king from walking through their
countryside. The king sent a group of messengers
to inform
that they must remove the barrier.
Upon hearing that the King was planning to do
this, however,
the villagers developed a plan
of their own. When the messengers arrived, they
found what appeared
to be a community of
lunatics, with people behaving in a bizarre
manner, throwing things and running
around
wildly. The messengers, alarmed at what they had
found, reported to King John that these
people were so mad as to be beyond punishment.
So, the villagers saved their farmland by tricking
the King. In Great Britain, tradition only
allows April Fool's tricks from midnight to noon
on
April 1. Those who try to play tricks in
the afternoon become the fools themselves.

四、Passage
Two(总题数:1,分数:10.00)
On the first day of
school one of my classmates began a talk with me
that changed my life. She
said, Hi, handsome.
My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old.
Why are you in college at such an age? I
asked.
I always dreamed of having a college
education and now I'm getting one! she told me.
After class we walked to the student union
building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We
became
instant friends.
At the end of
the semester we invited Rose to speak at our
football banquet and I'll never forget
what
she taught us. She cleared her throat and began:
We do not stop playing because we are old; we
grow old because we stop playing. There are only
four secrets to staying young, being happy and
achieving success.
You have to laugh
and find humor each and every day.
You've got
to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you
die. We have so many people walking
around
who are dead and they don't even know it!
There is a giant difference between growing
older and growing up. If you are nineteen years
old
and lie in bed for one full year and
don't do one productive thing, you wilt turn
twenty years
old. If I am eighty-seven years
old and stay in bed for a year and never do
anything I will turn
eighty-eight. Anybody
can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or
ability. The idea is to
grow up by always
finding the opportunity in change.
Have no
regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets
for what we did, but rather for things
we did
not do. The only people who fear death are those
with regrets.
She concluded her speech by
courageously singing The Rose. She challenged
each of us to study
the lyrics and live them
out in our daily lives.
At the year's end,
Rose finished the college degree she had begun all
those years before. One
week after graduation
Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two
thousand college students
attended her
funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who
taught by example that it's never too
late to
be all you can possibly be.

五、Passage
Three(总题数:1,分数:10.00)
People become quite
illogical when they try to decide what can be
eaten and what cannot be eaten.
If you lived
in the Mediterranean, for instance, you would
consider octopus a great delicacy.
You would
not be able to understand why some people find it
repulsive. On the other hand, your
stomach
would turn at the idea of frying potatoes in
animal fat—the normally accepted practice
in
many northern countries. The sad truth is that
most of us have been brought up to eat certain
foods and we stick to them all our lives.
No creature has received more praise and abuse
than the common garden snail. Cooked in wine,
snails
are a great luxury in various parts of
the world. There are countless people who, ever
since their
early years, have learned to
associate snails with food. My friend, Robert,
lives in a country
where snails are despised.
As his flat is in a large town, he has no garden
of his own. For years
he has been asking me
to collect snails from my garden and take them to
him. The idea never appealed
to me very much,
but one day, after a heavy shower, I happened to
be walking in my garden when
I noticed a huge
number of snails taking a stroll on some of my
prize plants. Acting on a sudden
impulse, I
collected several dozen, put them in a paper bag,
and took them to Robert. Robert was
delighted
to see me and equally pleased with my little gift.
I left the bag in the hall and Robert
and I
went into the living room where we talked for a
couple of hours. I had forgotten all about
the snails when Robert suddenly said that I
must stay for dinner. Snails would, of course, be
the main dish. I did not fancy the idea and I
reluctantly followed Robert out of the room. To
my surprise, we saw that there were snails
everywhere, they had escaped from the paper bag
and
had taken complete possession of the
hall! I have never been able to look at a snail
since then.

六、Passage
Four(总题数:1,分数:10.00)
The quality of
patience goes a long way toward your goal of
creating a more peaceful and loving
self. The
more patient you are, the more accepting you will
be of what life is, rather than insisting
that life be exactly as you would like it to
be. Without patience, life is extremely
frustrating.
You are easily annoyed,
bothered, and irritated. Patience adds a dimension
of ease and acceptance
to your life. It's
essential for inner peace. Becoming more patient
involves opening your heart
to the present
moment, even if you don't like it. If you are
stuck in a traffic jam, late for
an
appointment, being patient would mean keeping
yourself from building a mental snowball before
your thinking get out of control and gently
reminding yourself to relax. It might also be a
good
time to breathe as well as an
opportunity to remind yourself that, in the bigger
scheme, being
late is small stuff.
Patience is a quality of heart that can be
greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. An
effective
way that I have found to deepen my
own patience is to create actual practice
periods—periods
of time that I set up in my
mind to practice the art of patience. Life itself
becomesa classroom,
and the curriculum is
patience. You can start with as little as five
minutes and build up your
capacity for
patience over time. What you'll discover is truly
amazing. Your intention to be
patient,
especially if you know it's only for a short
while, immediately strengthens your capacity
for patience. Patience is one of those
special qualities where success feeds on itself.
Once you
reach the little milestone (里程碑)
—five minutes of successful patience—you'll begin
to see
that you do indeed have the capacity
to be patient, even for longer periods of time.
Over time,
you even become a patient person.
Being patient will help you to keep your
perspective. You'll see even a difficult
situation, say
your present challenge, isn't
life or death but simply a minor obstacle that
must be dealt with.
Without patience, the
same scenario (局面) can become a major emergency
complete with yelling,
frustration, hurt
feelings, and high blood pressure.

正确答案:(
Do Lucky Numbers
Really Bring Good Luck
Some people take
it for granted that some lucky numbers can bring
them good luck. For instance,
like getting
rich in Chinese
sounds it because widely used
now 8 is number lucky the so-called
and is
believed to bring good fortune.
Yet
many others don't think this way. They believe
that numbers have nothing to do with luck.
They regard numbers simply as mathematic
symbols for counting. They are anything but a
mystery.
They laugh at those who think
numbers can bring good luck.
As for me, I'm
in favor of the latter opinion. I think our
society is very modern now. We mustn't
count
on the so-called lucky numbers to fulfill our
wishes. Whether we can have good luck or not
depends on ourselves. If we work hard, good
luck will come to us.)
