Part III. Reading Comprehension (40 points; 55

Section 1
Directions: Each of
the following three passages is followed by some
questions. For
each question there are four
choices. Choose the best answer to each
question. Then blacken the corresponding letter on
the Answer Sheet.
Passage One?
Questions
41 to 45 are based on the following passage.
For the past twenty years, poll-takers (民意测验者)
have told us that the vast
majority of
Americans report that they are ―satisfied‖ or
―very satisfied‖ with their
jobs. But, when
the surveys pose a slightly different question—―If
you had to do it
over, would you choose the
same line of work?‖—sixty percent of working
Americans say they would choose another
occupation. This seems to tell us that
Americans feel that they are supposed to like
their jobs but, in reality, they don’t.
Most
of us are stuck in jobs we’d prefer not to have.
And some of us actually hate
what we do.
How does this happen in a land where citizens
are presumably free to do, and
become,
anything they want? First of all, some of us
didn’t deliberately choose our
jobs but simply
fell into them. Later, there was never time to
find out what we really
wanted to do.
Another reason people dislike their jobs is the
result of a change in the American
economy. A hundred years ago most
Americans worked for themselves on farms or in
small stores and workshops. Now, less than 10
percent of us are self-employed. Many
of us
work as cogs (轮牙) in the wheels of giant
corporations. We don’t make a
finished product
with our own hands, and we feel that we are
totally replaceable parts
in the machine.
Social scientists say that the happiest workers
are the ones who are
their own bosses—business
owners, executives, and professionals. Working for
a big
company often results in a sense of
powerlessness and malaise. Finally, being a
member of the baby boom generation increases
the chances of job dissatisfaction. In
the
struggle for careers among the members of this
large population ―bulge‖, many
people are
losing out in the competition. These individuals
may never achieve the
standard of living their
parents achieved, or go as far up the success
ladder as they had
hoped. The result is
bitterness, and a feeling of being trapped in a
―nowhere‖ job.
41. The best title for this
selection is __________.
A. Job Satisfaction
B. Why People Hate Their Jobs
C. Nowhere

growing problem
B. Large companies provide
many benefits for workers
C. Workers are
unhappy because they no longer work with their
hands
D. There are several reasons why workers
are unhappy with their jobs
43.
According to the passage, the majority of
Americans __________.
A. would choose another
occupation if they could begin again
B. are
self-employed
C. feel that they are supposed
to dislike their jobs
D. work in factories
44. The author implies that __________.

Passage Two
Questions 46
to 50 are based on the following passage.
Most
forest fires are caused by human carelessness or
ignorance. Forest fire
prevention, therefore,
is mainly a problem of creating better
understanding of the
importance of forests, an
awareness of the danger of fire in the woods, and
a sense of
personal responsibility to
safeguard the forests from danger. This is not an
easy job.
Careless smokers are responsible for
thousands of forest fires each year. Many of
these are started when cigarette butts (烟蒂)
and matches are thrown from
automobiles. Others are caused by
hunters, hikers (徒步旅行者), fishermen, or woods
workers who are careless in disposing of their
smoking materials. The Forest Service
has
posted rules in many of the National Forests that
prohibit smoking except in
certain designated
areas. Many of the states have laws against
throwing lighted
materials from automobiles.
The prevention of smoker-caused fires, however,
depends
upon changing the attitudes and
behavior of millions of people who smoke in
hazardous areas.
The most important
natural cause of fire is lightning (闪电). This
accounts for 11
percent of forest fires on
protected land for the entire nation. In the
Western States,
lightning causes a much higher
percentage of fires than it does in the East.
Advances in knowledge of fire weather are
helping forest protection forces to
know when
to be alert to lightning-caused fires. Adequate
and well-equipped forces
can control them
quickly and hold the damage to a minimum.
Experiments in
―seeding‖ thunder clouds to
prevent or control the lightning itself have been
in
process for many years, but new
breakthroughs are needed for any significant
reduction in the fires lightning starts.
46. This passage is chiefly about __________.
A. smoking in forests
B. changing
the attitudes and behavior of millions of people
C. the chief causes of forest fires and
their prevention
D. advances in knowledge
of fire weather
47. Preventing smoker-caused
forest fires is mainly a problem of __________.
A. building the proper knowledge and habits
in human beings
B. safeguarding the forests
from fire
C. posting rules in forests
D. holding the damage to a minimum
48.
Lightning-caused fires can be controlled quickly
by __________.
A. holding the fire damage
to a minimum
B. people who have changed
their attitudes and behavior
C. enough fire
fighters with good fire-fighting devices
D.
carrying out experiments in ―seeding‖ thunder
clouds
49. ―Alert to‖ (Line 2, Para. 4) most
probably means __________.
A. aware of
B. watchful for
C. responsible for
D. busy with
50. Which of the following
statements is true according to the passage?
__________.
A. It is difficult to prevent
forest fires
B. Smoking is allowed only in
certain forests
C. 11% of the forest fires
in the Western States are caused by lightning
D. Experiments in ―seeding‖ thunder clouds
have helped reduce lightning-caused
forest fires
Passage Three
Questions 51
to 55 are based on the following passage.
Some
years ago industries had more freedom than they
have now, and they did
not need to be as
careful as they must today. They did not need to
worry a lot about
the safety of the new
products that they developed. They did not have to
pay much
attention to the health and safety of
the people who worked for them. Often new
products were dangerous for the people who
used them;often conditions in the work
place
had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course sometimes there were real
disasters(灾难) which attracted the attention
of
governments and which showed the need for
changes.Also scientists who were
doing
research into the health of workers sometimes
produced information which
governments could
not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries
into the causes of
the disasters or the
problems. New safety rules were often introduced
as a result of
these inquiries;however, the
new rules came too late to protect the people who
died
or who became seriously ill.
Today
many governments have special departments which
protect customers and
workers. In the U. S.,
for example, there is a department which tests new
airplanes
and gives warnings about possible
problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft
producers must follow. Another department
controls the foods and drugs that
companies
sell.A third department looks at the places where
people work,and then
reports any companies
that are breaking the laws which protect the
health and safety
of workers. Of course,new
government departments and new laws cannot prevent
every accident or illness, but they are having
some good results. Our work places are
safer
and cleaner than before. The planes and cars which
we use for travel are better.
Producers are
thinking more about the safety and health of the
people who buy and
use their products.
main topic of the passage is _________.
A. conditions in the work place B. the
freedom of industries in the past
C. changes
in industrial production D. the safety and
health of workers and
customers
52. It
can be inferred from the passage that in the past
_________.
A. workers often got ill because of
the poor working conditions
B. companies were
free to put out any products they wanted to
C.
many people were killed by dangerous products
D. industries were as careful in management as
they are today
53. It is implied in the
passage that _________.
A. governments and
companies had different opinions about the safety
of products
B. governments paid little
attention to the safety of products
C.
government officials often did not listen to
scientists
D. in the past no safety laws were
introduced by governments
54. Some years ago
safety rules _________.
A. were put forward
due to scientists’ recommendations
B. came
into being as a result of the workers’ demands
C. were introduced because quite a number of
people were killed or seriously
injured
D. were effective enough to protect workers
and customers
55. The special departments
protect customers and workers in many ways EXCEPT
by _________.
A. testing new
products B. controlling the sale of
products
C. designing new products D.
inspecting work places

Passage Four?
Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following
passage.
When someone who is in good health
dies suddenly, there is usually an inquest.
An inquest is a kind of court inquiry. The person
in charge of an inquest is called
a coroner
(验尸官). His job is to find out exactly how a person
died.
If there is nothing suspicious
(怀疑的) about the death, he would decide that the
person died from natural causes or an
accident. If, however, he is suspicious, he may
decide that the person’s death was caused by a
person or persons unknown.
At one
inquest, the coroner was trying to find out
exactly what had caused the
death of a local
businessman, Henry Smith.
The man’s widow
was offering the evidence. She was very upset and
had to stop
from time to time.
The
coroner did not want to upset her more than
necessary, but he had to find out
the truth.
There were questions he had to ask her.
―Mrs. Smith, I know this is too much for you,‖ he
said, ―but I want you to think
very carefully
and then answer my questions.‖
―You and
your husband were having dinner at home. Is that
correct?‖
―Yes.‖
―Suddenly he fell
to the floor.‖
―Yes.‖
―Did he say
anything?‖
The widow lowered her head.
―Please, Mrs. Smith, you must answer the
question. What were his last words?‖
The
widow took a deep breath and then spoke. ―He
said,‖ she whispered, ―I’m
not surprised you
were charged only 50 cents for that seafood we had
for dinner.‖
( ) 56. An inquest
is done in one’s home.
( ) 57. The coroner
decides on the nature of a person’s death.
(
) 58. The coroner was very careful in asking Mrs.
Smith questions so as not to
upset her.
(

( ) 60. The bad seafood was responsible for
Mr. Smith’s death.

Questions 61 to 65
are based on the following passage.
All of
us communicate with one another nonverbally as
well as with words. Most
of the time we’re not
aware that we’re doing it. We gesture with
eyebrows or hands,
meet someone else’s eyes
and look away, or change positions in a chair.
These actions
we assume are occasional.
However in recent years researchers have
discovered that
there is a system to them
almost as consistent and understandable as
language.
One important kind of body
language is eye behavior. Americans are careful
about how and when they meet one another’s
eyes. In our normal conversation, each
eye
contact lasts only about a second before one or
both of us look away. When two
Americans look
searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become
more intimate.
Therefore, we carefully avoid
this, except in suitable situations.
Researchers who are engaged in the study of
communication through body
movement are not
prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of
gestures. When an
American rubs his nose, it
may mean he is disagreeing with someone or
refusing
something. But there are other
possible interpretations, too. Another example:
when a
student in conversation with a
professor holds the older man’s eyes a little
longer than
usual it can be a sign of respect,
it can be a challenge to the professor’s
authority, or it
can be something else
entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the
situation, not
for a separate meaningful
gesture.
Communication between human beings
would be just dull if it were all done with
words.
61. How can people communicate
with each other besides language?

put your mom on edge. Consistently complete your

Hang out with your parents

know you enjoy seeing movies, having leisurely
dinners or
walking around the mall with them.

十 150 1你在英语学习中有些什么经验 2你想怎样进一步加强英语学习
As far as we know, a lot of
students are not good at English, because, in
their opinion,
learning English is very
boring.
I think the number one problem
is vocabulary. I believe that we can learn English
words by
heart through reading. If we read so
many articles, we can remember lots of words. And
we also
can watch English movies and listen to
the English songs to enlarge our vocabulary and
increase
our listening skills. In language
learning, the sense of language is important than
grammar, so it is
important for us in reading
comprehension. What’s more, we can try to
communicate with people
in English. This is
good for our oral English.
In a word, in
English learning, we need to persistently practise
our listening, speaking,
reading and writing.
Let's do it now.

十八150 1你为什么要上大学2你在大学怎样做?
Students long to attend colleges or universities
for various reasons. In my opinion, the most
common reasons are to prepare for a career, to
have new experiences and learn to be independent.
Career preparation is becoming more and more
important to young people. For many, this is the
primary reason to go to college. They know
that the job market is competitive and in order to
be
employed in the future they have to be well
equipped with knowledge and skills.
Also,
students go to colleges or universities to have
experiences and learn to live on their own.
Going to colleges often means having the
opportunity to meet with different people from
different
parts of the country. They learn to
communicate and co-operate with each other. For
most students,
we guess, it is the first time
that they have been away from home. They are faced
with many new
situations and have to learn to
solve them independently, making decisions on
their own and
dealing with various things
themselves. So colleges and universities help them
grow up

1小孩是否应该有零花钱,为什么?2你怎样利用零花钱
Kids have a long
way to go in their lives. What they will be depend
on the influence that they
get before the age
of 20. We must give them positive influence during
their childhood.
We should give a kid a
little money when he is 9 years old. For instance,
we can give a kid 10
yuan every month,
and ask him to write us a report on how he uses
the money. This can give him a
right idea of
how he should use the money.
We also
should give the kids some chances to earn money,
by which means we can show
them that earning
money is not easy, and they should spend the money
carefully.
The most important point is
that we must tell the kids that money is not
everything in our
lives. There are lots of
things that we can not buy with money, such as
health and love.
Consequently, the best
we could do to provide the kids with a correct
understanding of
money is let them approach
money closely. We should give a little money to
the kids and tell them
what money is at all.

1人在社会上为什么要诚信2怎么做才能算诚信
When it comes to
honesty, quite a lot of people believe it is
essential to a person’s character
and success.
They base their idea on the following
reasons: on one hand, successful business owes
much
to mutual trust; on another hand, great
people in history such as Abraham Lincoln and
Genete
Washington set us good examples of
being honest, they are great because they are
honest.
But some people think
differently. They believe honesty is becoming out
of date. Their
reasons run as
following: to begin with, cheating on exams is
becoming more and more popular;
in addition,
some singers and movie stars cheat on taxes; last
but not the least, if you are not
careful
enough, you’ll buy some defective goods and fake
products.
It is high time we emphasized
and encouraged honesty. We can take effective
measures to
restore it. For example, kids
should be taught to tell truth, strict rules and
regulations should be
carried out to stop
cheatings on exams and taxes, etc.

English is becoming more and more important

Important international conferences are held in
English. Many books, newspapers, magazines and

In China, English is spoken as an important

will be hosted in Beijing. Many foreigners
will come to China. We should try our best to
serve the
Olympics. For example, we can help
the foreign visitors if we learn English well.
People all over the world are learning

Pupils

school, middle school and university. We should
study
English hard and try our best to have a
good command of the language.

I Remember Mama is my
favorite American movie. Education has been a
primary concern in
many traditional families.
In I Remember Mama, Martha and her husband Lars
show high respect
for education. Especially
Martha, she plays an influential role within her
family. She tells her
children that knowledge
is priceless.
They invite Mr. Hyde to read
them books in the evening. Although Mr. Hyde has
left them a
collection of his books without
getting paid a couple months of rents, Martha does
not get angry
with him. Instead, she tells her
children that the value of all of his books have
greatly exceeded the
total amount of his
unpaid rents. Nevertheless, Martha and Lars always
encourage and support
their children to keep
on pursing their educational goals.
It is
very important for children to understand their

for his home. But the address was not clear
and I got lost.
I asked an old man the
way. He told me in detail, but because of his
accent. I didn’t
understand him and looked
puzzled.
The old man offered to lead me
there. It took us twenty minutes to find the right
place.
When I thanked him, the old man smiled
and said: ―It’s my pleasure. I can also take it as
a walk.‖
If every person treated others
like this, our world would be a more beautiful,
more
wonderful one to live in. If anyone gives
you a hand, you should express your sincere
gratitude to
him or her. Only in this way will
everyone be ready to help others and feel
satisfied with it.

Dear
Professor Wang,
I'm writing to you to ask
for leave. My mother fell ill last week and now is
still at hospital. My
sister is now in the
hospital taking care of her. But she can't stay
any longer. So I want to go home
to look after
my mother for several days. According the doctor
my mother will recover in about
another three
weeks. So I will be away from school for at least
two weeks. I 'm going to take my
books with me
and try to find time to review and preview my
lessons. I also have asked Wang
Ping to take
detailed notes in class, so that when I come back
I can consult his notes.
Yours sincerely

Dear Professor Wang,
How are you? I spend much time studying
English but the results are not satisfactory. I
try
hard to remember new words but I forget
them very soon. When I come across some long
sentences, I just don’t know the structure and
I get quite confused about the meaning of these
sentences. When should I do? Could you please
spare me some time to give me some advice?
I don’t think I’ll take up much of your time. At
most one hour, I think, would be enough. Can
I come to you office to visit you
sometime this weekend? Or you can appoint the time
and
place.
Your Sincerely

I have read a
book recently. It is a novel whose title is Woman

always has new, brave
ideas and once she has a
new idea, some of which are interesting and
exciting, but some are
dangerous ,she wants to
put it into practice immediately. Her life is full
of struggles. I think it is

also think the ideas should be
reasonable and
practical. I think the book is worth reading.

Nowadays,
we can see some boys and girls who live in a small

After all, they will

Part III. Reading Comprehension
(40 points; 55 minutes)?
Section 1
Directions: Each of the following three
passages is followed by some questions. For
each question there are four choices. Choose
the best answer to each
question. Then blacken
the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One?
Questions 41 to 45 are based
on the following passage.
Banks are ordinarily
prepared to pay out all accounts; they rely on
depositors not
to demand payment all at the
same time. If depositors should come to fear that
a bank
is not sound, that it cannot pay off
its depositors, then that fear might cause all the
depositors to appear on the same day. If they
did, the bank could not pay all the
accounts.
However, if they did not all appear at once, then
there would always be
funds to pay those who
wanted their money when they wanted it. Mrs. Elsie
Vaught
has told us of a terrifying bank run
that she experienced. One day in December of
1925 several banks failed to open in a city
where Mrs. Vaught lived. The other banks
anticipated a run the next day, and so the
officers of the bank in which Mrs. Vaught
worked as a teller had enough funds in hand to
pay off as many depositors as might
apply. The
officers simply instructed the tellers to pay on
demand. Next morning a
crowd gathered in the
bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of
the line
convinced many that the bank could
not possibly pay off everyone. People began to
push and then to fight for places near the
tellers’ windows. Clothing was torn and
limbs
were broken, but the jam continued for hours. The
power of the panic
atmosphere is evident in
the fact that two tellers, though they knew that
the bank was
sound and could pay out all
depositors, nevertheless withdrew the funds in
their own
accounts. Mrs. Vaught says that she
had difficulty restraining herself from doing the
same.
41. A bank run occurs when
__________.
A. a bank is closed for one or
more days
B. too many depositors attempt to
draw out their money at one time
C. there
is not enough money to pay all of its depositors
at one time
D. employees of a bank take
their own funds out of the bank
42. The
tellers in Mrs. Vaught’s bank were told to
__________.
A. explain why they could not
pay out all deposits
B. pay out deposits as
requested
C. assure customers that the bank
was sound
D. pay out money as slowly as
possible
43. The essential cause of a run on a
bank is __________.
A. loss of confidence
B. lack of sufficient funds
C. crowds of
people D. inefficient tellers
44. Which of
the following did Mrs. Vaught say?
A. She
knew that the bank was not sound.
B. She
feared that too many withdrawals would close the
bank.
C. She was not able to draw out her
money.
D. She was tempted to draw out her
money.
45. According to the passage, the
actions of the customers of Mrs. Vaught’s bank
were
influenced chiefly by the __________.
A. ease with which they could obtain their
money
B. confidence demonstrated by other
customers of the bank
C. confidence that
Mrs. Vaught demonstrated
D. failure of
several other banks to open
Passage Two?
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following
passage.
Gravity holds us so dose to the
Earth's surface that nobody can jump more than a
few feet into the air without the force of
gravity pulling him down. It takes a powerful
engine to keep an airplane up in the air. If
you throw a ball upwards as hard as you
can,
you will notice that it travels in a curved path
before it comes back to the ground.
If the
Earth had no gravity, the ball, instead of
traveling in a curve, would move away
in a
straight line; in fact, it would never come back
to the ground. If the Earth were to
lose its
pull of gravity, we should all fly off it as it
spins round in space. The Earth has
a strong
pull, but modem rockets going out into space are
able to escape from the
gravity, because they
travel so quickly. With the ball thrown into the
air, the height
reached by the ball depends
upon how hard it is thrown. The greater the
starting-speed,
the higher the ball will go.
If it could be thrown so that it traveled fast
enough, the ball
would escape into space and
never come back. Nobody can throw a ball as fast
at this,
but powerful rocket engines can send
spaceships away from the Earth at such a speed
that the Earth's gravity is not able to pull
them back. This is how we can now send
rockets
to the Moon.
46. Gravity holds us dose the
Earth's surface, and as a result, __________.
A. we can lift ourselves no more than a few
feet above the Earth
B. nobody can jump a few
feet into the air
C. no one will be pulled
down
D. any one of us can Jump as high as
expected
47. What would happen to a ball
thrown upwards if there were no gravity?
A. It
would spin round in space.
B. It would fly off into space
C.
It would fall into a curved path.
D. It would move towards the Earth.
48.
The ball thrown into the air would never come back
to the ground __________.
A. without such a
powerful horizontal push
B. if it were
thrown upwards as hard as you can
C. should
it travel in a curved path
D. were
it not for gravity
49. The height the ball
will reach depends on __________.
A. the
escape velocity B. the
limiting velocity
C. its starting velocity
D. its traveling speed
50. What is it that
makes it possible to put a spaceship into orbit?
A. the Earth's gravity B.
a strong pull
C. a powerful engine
D. the powerful rocket engine
Passage
Three?
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the
following passage.
Does a bee know what is
going on its mind when it navigates its way to
distant
food sources and back to the hive,
using polarized sunlight and the tiny magnet it
carries as an aid? Or is the bee just a
machine? (Unable to do its mathematics and
dance its language in any other way to use
Donald Griffin’s term) Does a bee have
―awareness‖, or to use a phrase I like better,
can a bee think and imagine?
There is an
experiment for this, or at least an observation,
made long ago by Karl
Von Frisch and more
recently confirmed by James Gould at Princeton,
biologists who
wish to study such things as
bees to fly from the hive to one or another
special place.
To do this, they begin by
placing a source of sugar very close to the hive
so that the
bees can learn what the game is
about. Then, at regular intervals, the dish or
whatever
is moved progressively farther and
farther from the hive.
Eventually, the target
is being moved 100 feet or more at a jump, very
far from the
hive. Sooner or later, while this
process is going on, the geologists shifting the
dish of
sugar will find the bees are out there
waiting for them precisely where the next
position had been planned. This is an
uncomfortable observation to make.
51. Which
of the following is the best title for the
passage?
A. The Bee Hive: Nature’s Candy
Shop
B. Testing the Awareness of Bees
C. Navigational Techniques of Birds and Insects
D. Behaviorists Versus Biologists: A
Zoological Debate
52. In the second paragraph
why is Karl Von Frisch mentioned?
A. To
introduce his observation on bee behavior.
B. To contrast his theories with those of James
Gould.
C. To give credit to his description
of the bee hive.
D. To support the argument
that bees use sunlight to navigate.
53.
According to the author, why was sugar used in the
study?
A. To keep the bees nourished and
healthy during the experiment.
B. To
train the bees to travel to a particular place.
C. To reward the bees for performing the
experiment correctly.
D. To ensure that the
bees did not sting the scientists.
54. The
result of the experiment explained in the passage
seems to indicate which of
the following?
A. Research using bees is too dangerous to be
conducted successfully.
B. Bees are unable
to navigate beyond 100 feet of their hive.
C. Scientists can teach bees to speak to people.
D. Bees are able to perform limited
reasoning tasks.
55. Which of the following
best describes the format of the passage?
A. a
response to criticism
B. a comparison of
two competing theories
C. a question
followed by a possible answer
D. a position
supported by scientific debate

Passage Four?
Questions 56 to 60 are based
on the following passage:
Mrs. Green gave her
husband her letters to post when he was going to
work. But
sometimes Mr. Green forgot to do so
and kept them in his pocket for days.
One
fine morning in March, Mrs. Green asked him to
post a letter. ―Please post
this letter and
don’t forget,’ she said. Mr. Green put the letter
in his pocket and said, ―I
am sure to post
this one.‖ Mrs. Green smiled and said, ―Yes, I
believe that you will
this time.‖ Mrs. Green
looked at his back, and was still smiling when she
closed the
door.
Mr. Green walked
slowly along the street. Soon a man came up from
behind him.
When he walked by, the man looked
back and smiled, ―Don’t forget to post the
letter!‖
Then a girl walked by, and she
turned and smiled, too. ―Don’t forget to post that
letter!‖ she said.
Mr. Green said to
himself, ―Why are these people smiling at me? And
how do they
know I have a letter to post?‖
At last he came to a post office, posted
the letter, and walked on. But after a while,
a boy came up from behind him and asked him,
―Did you post your letter?‖
―Yes, I did,‖
said Mr. Green.
―Then I can take off this
paper,‖ said the boy.
He took a large
piece of paper from the back of Mr. Green’s coat
and showed it to
him. On the paper were these
words – ―Ask him to post the letter.‖
( ) 56. Mrs. Green asked her husband to post
her letters on his way home.
( ) 57. Mr.
Green sometimes forgot to post the letters
immediately.
( ) 58. Many people in the
street knew Mr. Green.
( ) 59. Mr.
Green had his wife put the large piece of paper on
his back.
( ) 60. The paper on his back was
a good hint to help Mr. Green remember to post
the letter.

Part IV. Short Answer Questions (10 points; 15
minutes)?
Directions: In this part there is a
short passage with five questions or incomplete
statements. Read the passage carefully. Then
answer the questions or
complete the
statements in the fewest possible words (not
exceeding 10
words.) Write your answers on the
Answer Sheet of Paper Two.
(请将

Questions 61
to 65 are based on the following passage.
Thank—you cards seem to be rare in an age when
the Internet continues to reduce
human
contact.
Although our society has changed
greatly over the past century, the etiquette
(礼
节) of thank-you notes has not.
While
most people would agree that thank-you notes are a
necessity,there are still
those who forever
delay or are forgetful for unknown reasons.
And at no time of the year are thank-you notes
more obvious (or lacking) than
June.The month
of brides and graduations, and the beginning of
summer parties.
―It’s a must-do thing.A
real thank-you does not come by e-mail.They come
in
the mail in an envelope. And what comes out
of an envelope is a beautiful thing to
touch
and to pass around for everyone to read,‖said
etiquette expert Letitia Baldrige.
Don’t
think for a second that Baldrige is old-fashioned.
Handwritten thank-you
notes-any
handwritten letters,for that matter-have taken
on an air of extra importance and
dignity (尊严)
in
this e-hyper (超电子) world.
Baldrige
remains hopeful that the art may be enjoying a
renaissance (复兴).
More than simply obeying
rules of etiquette,thank-you cards are a sign of
caring.
―They’re more important now than
ever,‖expert Peter Post says.―You’re building
a relationship. And part of building that
relationship is that you acknowledge (表示谢
意)
when someone has done something nice for you.’’
The payoff (回报),Post says,can be huge.―It
perpetuates (延续),‖he says.―The
more we do
it,the more it comes back to us,and it’s a benefit
to us a11.It makes our
world a little bit
nicer place to live in.‖
