The role of numbers and mathematics in Chinese culture
Mathematics has significant implications for our life. Just as the
great Renaissance astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei
puts it, “The entire universe is written in the language of
mathematics.” Basic mathematics --addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division--is used by the majority of people every
single day. Counting change, budgeting, managing time,
calculating tips and tax, memorizing phone numbers and locker
combinations and estimating time and distance are all situations
where basic numeracy and math skills are needed.
Aside from being used simply, numbers tend to symbolize
different massage in different places just as 13 is unlucky in most
Western countries. In China, whether a number is considered lucky
or not is often related to the similarity between the pronunciation of
the number and the sound of another word which carries a positive
implication. The role of numbers in determining the luck has a long
history in Chinese culture. It is said that in the Forbidden City there
are 9,999 rooms. When buying a house or choosing a telephone
number or a license plate number for one's automobile, people
always focus on the auspicious numbers such as 6,8 and 9,etc,
whereas because the pronunciation of 4 is similar to the “death” in
Chinese,4 is rarely used in life. For example Nokia phones in China
