Passage 1
Questions 1

10 are based on Passage 1. (30 points, 3 points each)
Madame Tussaud was born in Strasbourg in 1761. Her name was Marie Grosholtz. Her
mother became housekeeper to a doctor in Switzerland called Dr Philippe Curtius. It was this
man who taught Marie how to make wax models. When Dr Curtius moved to Paris, he took
Marie and her mother with him.
In
Paris, the doctor and Marie made wax models of famous
people
and he opened waxworks museum. And then, when he died, in 1794, Marie took over
the waxworks exhibition. For 33 years, Madame Tussaud took her exhibition around the
British Isles. Then, in 1835, she found a permanent for the waxworks in Baker
Street, in London.
In
1795, Marie married Francois
Tussaud、a
French engineer, but after
only seven years she left him and moved to England with her older son. Her younger son
joined them later. She never went back to her husband or to France. In 1850, Madame
Tussaud died. She was eighty-nine. Her sons inherited the business and, in 1884, her
grandsons moved the exhibition to Marylebone Road, where it still is today. Now, more than
two and a half million people from all over the world visit Madame Tussaud's every
year.
It's the most popular tourist attraction in Great Britain.

Passage 2
A Belgian couple
tour China by bicycle
Questions 11--20 are based on Passage 2. (30 points, 3 points each)
On the road from Wuzhou to Yangshuo in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, I met
Patrick Decoster and Nathalie Meert for the first time. It was drizzling, so few people were
on the road. The foreign couple, their bikes draped with bags, were quite conspicuous. At
first I thought they were just riding bikes for fun like other tourists in Yangshuo or Guilin,
but then they told me they'd already ridden about 9,000 kilometers.
Two years ago, Decoster, a guard, and Meert, a supermarket cashier in Brussels, left
their jobs and began their world bicycle tour. So far, they've toured Eastern Europe,
Southeast Asia, Hongkong and Macao. In April 1997, they flew to Shenzhen; they plan to
spend three months touring China.
Decoster thinks the best way to see the world is by bicycle. They have had more
experiences than most travelers. They have encountered dangers and hostilities, but no
disasters, only incidents that added color to their trip.
On their way to W uzhou, they stayed in a villager's home. The hostess brought them
food and made a bed for them. She even supplied them with hot water and basins which were
beyond her service range.
felt she was quite sincere and really wanted to help us,they said. payment
for that night's food and lodging was only 20 yuan. We were surprised at the low price.
Meert said it was very comforting for lonely travelers to meet warm-hearted people.
A
day later, I unexpectedly met the couple again on a famous tourist street, West
Street, also called Foreigners Street. Meert said they had got lost after we separated. A man
had told them to just go straight ahead but they had run into a narrow lane.
Decoster said can happen when touring by bicycle. But they still think
China is a good place to tour by bicycle; the wide roads are in good condition.
dwelling space for Chinese people is very crowded, but it seems spacious to
European people,Meert commented. This is new knowledge to them. Learning such
mformation firsthand is entirely different from obtaining it via the media.
''When he first suggested this bicycle tour, I thought he was mad.
But令
was right,Meert said.
Luckily their jobs in Brussels are still waiting for them.

Passage 3
Christopher Columbus
About five hundred years ago, there lived a boy named Columbus. He loved the ocean,
and often went to sea. He grew up to be a fine sailor.
In
the time of Columbus, men did not know much about the earth; most of them
thought it was flat. Columbus thought it must be round. He said: think I can sail around
it, just as a fly can walk around an apple. I will do so. All I want is a ship and some sailors to
go with me.
But he was a poor man. How could he get ships and men? He asked many people to help
him. Some made fun of him. Some even thought he was crazy. But he kept on trying for many
years.
At last the Queen of Spain gave him three ships and some men. With these Columbus
sailed west. One week passed, and he went on. Two weeks, and still he sailed on. Three
weeks went by, and still he saw the sea, the sea, only the sea.
