I don’t know exactly when my love for qipaos started. I just know that when I saw Zhao Wei
and her costars wearing qipaos in Romance in the Rain TV series, which was set in Shanghai in the
1930s, I was smitten.
In my native United States, non-Asians are sometimes blamed on social media for wearing
qipaos, but in China, people have what I consider a more reasonable and open-minded approach: If
foreigners wear qipaos, it is seen as a gesture of appreciation for Chinese culture.
A Chinese friend recently gave me one of her old qipaos. The ice blue cloth features circles
with four plants known as “mei lan zhu ju” in China. The qipao fits well at the shoulders, but not at
the waist. The qipao was simply too tight. Many of my friends advised me to buy a new one.
However, the value in it was that my dead friend who had been an outstanding Chinese actress in
the 1980s had given it to me; it was a symbol of our friendship. I finally decided to have the woman
in the qipao store alter (修改) it. Even before the alternations, I thought it suited me well, and the
blue matched the color of my eyes, and I’m fascinated by “old” things.
The woman said my qipao was “Shanghai style” and made of brocade (织锦缎). It had held
pretty well throughout the years. The “qipao doctor” said she could add material to widen it, so I
chose a light pink cloth with a “noble” flowered design, which fitted well with the qipao and had a
similar style with the original one. Finally, my old qipao was altered to my satisfaction and given a
second life.
24. What does the underlined word “smitten” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Confused. B. Inspired.
C. Attracted. D. Disappointed
25. Why didn’t the author buy a new qipao?
A. She valued the friendship. B. The qipao fitted her well.
C. She disliked new designs. D. The qipao was a “Shanghai style”
26. The author chose the light pink cloth because ______.
A. the qipao doctor persuaded her B. it matched the color of her eyes
C. it had a similar style with the qipao D. she appreciated the traditional culture
27. What is the best title of the text?
A. The Increasing Popularity of Qipaos B. Giving an Old Qipao a Second Life
C. My Enthusiasm for Collecting Qipaos D. Spreading Chinese Culture to the US

C
The Philippines, a tropical island nation in the Pacific, will now require by law all graduating
students from elementary school to college plant 10 trees each before they can graduate.
The law was supported in the House and is now sent to the Philippines Senate for action.
Supporters of the law see this as an opportunity for the Filipino youth to help deal with climate
change and air pollution and build a greener environment for their generation.
“To this end, the educational system shall be a centre of spreading continuous use of natural
resources among the young to make them socially-responsible citizens.” The House bill stated,
which was authored by representative Gary Alejano.
Alejano estimates that over the course of one generation the bill will be responsible for 525
billion trees planted. This comes from over 12 million students graduating from elementary school
each year, 5 million from high school and 500,000 from college, equaling 175 million new trees
planted each year.
The Philippines consists of 7,641 islands in Southeast Asia. Across those islands, deforestation

has been a primary environmental issue. Agriculture has led to a significant drop in forested areas
across the Philippines. Though the 20th century, forested area in the Philippines decreased from 70
percent to 20 percent. It is estimate that 24.2 million acres of forests were cut down from 1934 to
1988, primarily from logging.
The performance of this new law could set off a situation, by which the Philippines switches
from net loss to net gain of trees, a simple and powerful message to the Filipino youth with the
potential for long term positive influence.
28. Why does the Philippines make the law to plant trees?
A. To create a better environment to live in.
B. To show the government is taking action.
C. To make sure students can graduate easily.
D. To raise people’s awareness of education.
29. What dose Alejano think is important?
A. Natural resources. B. The future generation.
C. Powerful messages. D. The educational system.
30. How many trees will high school graduating students plant each year?
A. 5 million. B. 50 million.
C. 120 million. D. 175 million.
31. What has caused a sharp drop in forests across the Philippines?
A. A loss of soil. B. Agriculture.
C. Climate change. D. Air pollution.

Scientists say they have created a new device that can turn brain signals into electronic speech.
The invention could one day give people who have lost the ability to speak a better way of
communicating than current ones.
The device was developed by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco.
Their results were recently published in a study in the journal Nature. Scientists created a “brain
machine connection” that was set in the brain. The device was built to read and record brain signals
that helped control the muscles to produce speech. These include the lips, tongue and jaw.
The study involved five volunteer patients who were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). The
individuals had the ability speak and already had electrodes (电极) set in their brains. The volunteers
were asked to read several hundred sentences aloud while the researchers recorded their brain
activity.
The researchers used audio recordings to reproduce the vocal (发声的) muscle movement
which is the key to producing human speech. Future studies will test the technology on people who
are unable to speak.
The study reports the reproduced sentences were understandable to hundreds of human
listeners asked to write out what they heard. The listeners were able to write out 43 percent of
sentences with perfect accuracy.
Edward Chang is a professor of the university’s Weill Institute. He was a lead researcher on
the project. Chang admitted that much more research of the system would be needed to reach the
goal of perfectly reproducing spoken language.
