Robots seem very new to most people. But they have a long history. The first one was made
by a Greek scientist. Robots have been designed (被设计) to do many things, such as playing
music, saving people, working in a hospital, serving people in the restaurant and so on.
There are some robots working in the Jinjiang Robots Hotel in Tongren, Guizhou. One
hundred customers (顾客) can have a big dinner in it together. Two of the robots serve drinks,
while the other four serve the food. But not all the work in the restaurant is done by them. There
are also people working there, especially in the kitchen. The cooks are humans, because the
robots don’t have the skills to cook.
Robots are also used in American hospitals; a robot takes meals from the kitchen to the sick
people’s rooms. It never gets lost because it has a map in its computer system (系统).
In the future, robots will work in space. But robots will never take the place of human. They

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited
a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around
in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even
wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the
way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to
the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I
realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and
look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him
waiting.
When I just got to my office, the secretary (秘书) showed in (领入) the man who had asked
me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each

other at the first sight.

Having a cheetah as a pet in the house Does it sound scary to you But for a family in South
Africa, one cheetah is treated as a VIP (Very Important Person) in the house.
The big cheetah is named Jolie, after the film star Angelina Jolie. 21 She can
often be found eating from the kitchen table, taking a short sleep on the sofa, or even sleeping

on Lucy and Jeff’s bed. The big cat also sleeps and plays with the Browns’ other pet, the more
usual one — a sheepdog (牧羊犬). 22
Having a cheetah as a pet is unusual. At first, Mrs. Brown wasn’t willing to keep a cheetah as
a pet. She said, “ 23 But we are now happy that we did it — she is part of the
family.” Just like her name, four-year- old Jolie has achieved a celebrity status (名人地位) in the
Browns’ hometown. Fans often come to their home to take pictures of her. 24
However, a cheetah is always a cheetah. 25 “She makes a lot of mess in the
house, urinating (小便) everywhere and chewing everything. It’s her wild instincts (本能),” said
Mrs. Brown. There might be some problems of having a cheetah as a pet in the house, but some
unusual fun must also be waiting ahead.

Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed
for a long time, we won’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or
some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker
change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them
clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences.
People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs,
education levels and so on.
How does language develop then On the one hand, many of the languages changes begin
with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their
language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s.
Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for long. On the other hand, we
get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them
by making words shorter or combining words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English
changes so much shows that it is alive and well.
1. What does the writer think of the change and development of language
____ __________________________________________________ ________.
2. Why do people use different sets of words and expressions according to the passage
______________________________________________ ________________.
