1. The sudden death of United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on Saturday
quickly became part of the presidential campaign.
Republicans campaigning for the party's presidential nomination said President Barack
Obama -- a Democrat -- should not try to replace Scalia before he leaves office in January.
They said he is too close to the end of his presidency.
Republican front-runner Donald Trump even called on Republican Senate leaders to block the
nomination. He said,
But Democrats said it is the duty of the president to name new justices no matter how soon
his or her presidency is to end.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told supporters
responsibility to nominate a new justice and the Senate has a responsibility to vote.
Justices serve on the Supreme Court until they leave voluntarily or die. Some of them serve
for many years after the president who named them leaves office.
Obama said Saturday that he would seek Senate approval for a new justice before he leaves
office.
he said.
The president also called on the Senate
These are responsibilities that I take seriously, as should everyone. They're bigger than any
one party -- they're about a democracy.
Republican Mitch McConnell is the Senate Majority Leader. He said the president should not
nominate a new justice. The U.S. Constitution gives the Senate the power to approve a
presidential nominee for the Supreme Court.

Some political experts have said if the president were a Republican with little time left in office,
Democrats would be calling for him or her not to name a new justice. And they would be
calling on the Senate not to vote on the nominee. In other words, the experts believe that a
politician's positions change depending on whether they believe it is good for their political
party.
If the Senate does not confirm a new justice before Obama leaves office, the seat will be
empty for almost a year. It is unusual for a seat on the court to be empty for so long. In the
past 100 years, ten justices have died while they were on the court. They were replaced
within about three months on average.
Republicans say a Supreme Court justice should not be named in a presidential election year.
But 14 justices have been approved in the same year as a presidential election, including in
1988.
Many important cases on the court are decided by a vote of 5 to 4. Scalia was often on the
winning side of cases that conservatives supported. But now, without his vote, conservatives
cannot win many of their cases because there are four liberals on the court.
A Supreme Court that has eight members can still decide some cases, if more than four
justices agree. Without a fifth vote, many important cases cannot be decided.
This year the court was to consider many difficult issues -- including abortion, immigration
and religious freedom.

2. During the search for Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, experts have found lost
shipwrecks and undiscovered volcanoes.
But they have not found any wreckage from the missing jetliner.
The passenger plane was traveling from Malaysia to Beijing, China, in March 2014. The flight
disappeared over the Indian Ocean. On board were 239 people, and all are presumed dead.
An American company specializing in underwater searches will examine the waters off the
west coast of Australia. The company will scan large areas of the ocean floor. A Chinese
rescue ship will assist looking for MH370.
The Malaysian aircraft is thought to have crashed in very deep water. Parts of the Indian
Ocean in the area are up to 6,000 meters deep. Searches have failed to find any debris.

An undated handout sonar image released by Joint Agency Coordination Centre
(JACC) on Jan. 13, 2016 shows an iron or steel-hulled shipwreck some 3,700
meters below the surface and believed to have gone down at the turn of the 19th
century.
The ocean floor in the search area is treacherous. An Australian search report mentioned
crevasses, ridges and 2,000-meter sheer cliffs,
missions difficult.
An underwater sonic device collided with a tall mud volcano in January. The cable snapped,
and the device sunk to the ocean floor.
But two shipwrecks have been found. Sonar photos found a ship made of steel or iron from
the 19th century. Wreckage from another ship was located in May.
The only wreckage of Flight 370 found so far was a piece of the plane washed up on Reunion
Island in 2015. Reunion Island is in the western Indian Ocean near Madagascar.
The search area is now limited to 60,000 square kilometers off of Australia. Investigators say
they will end all search efforts in June.

3. America's top diplomat was in Cambodia Tuesday on the second stop of his trip to
Asia.
Secretary of State John Kerry met with Cambodian government leaders and opposition party
members in Phnom Penh.
Kerry said the country has improved its human rights record and made economic progress.
But he said he told officials that he was concerned about continued human rights violations.

Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. [State Department PhotoPublic Domain]
Kerry met separately with Prime Minister Hun Sen and acting opposition party leader Kem
Sokha.
After the meetings, the U.S. official said that
to ensure that all elected representatives are free to perform their responsibilities without
fear of attack or arrest.
Seventeen opposition members and activists are jailed in Cambodia. Opposition leader Sam
Rainsy is living in self-declared exile to avoid charges made against him. Many observers
believe the charges are unfair. And rights groups say the United States should not improve
relations with Cambodia until its leaders guarantee reforms.
Secretary Kerry also praised Cambodia for its economic progress. He told the prime minister
that remarkable growth. You have seen incredible changes --
not just here in Phnom Penh, which moved from a 350,000-person war-torn city to a much
more modern city of 2.2 million people.
