A new research of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows
that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young
people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression .
The study shows that girls bee more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst
of all.

实用文档

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for
girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves
in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression
when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding
their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.

Dr Marian Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will
have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises
kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people
to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should
encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities
and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes —and if they see
signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection
between romance and depression seems to bee weak with age. Love will always make us feel
young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

5. Which of the following is more likely to have depression?

A. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we
were going home. On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard (柜厨) outside a furniture shop.
It was tall and narrow. “Buy it, ” my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the
roof rack. I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the
roof rack. It was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.

In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that
evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good
idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake,
I wonder?” In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously
as they passed. But then, with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic.
The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir, ” he said. “Do you need any more help?”

I was a bit puzzled. “Thanks, officer, ” I said. “You have been very kind. I live
just on the road.”

He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well, well, ”
he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was something else.”

My wife began to laugh. The truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the
officer. “Yes, it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they
have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.

I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have
visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I
was so shy that I never dared ask plete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in
circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.

I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that
puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will
实用文档

insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove
that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you
cannot possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between
their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction
to that in which you should be going.

If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the
town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.

Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct
him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few
steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at
this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind
me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.

Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for
directions of my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.

8. What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?

A. He will direct the right way to the person willingly.

B. He will reply to it by the means of being a stranger to the town.

C. He will give the very person long list of direction.

D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction.

9. Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?

A. Because of his poor sense of direction. B. Because he always forgot the way home.

C. Because he did not have any friend. D. Because he used to be shy and dared not
ask others the way.

10. How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room?

A. He felt strange. B. He felt embarrassed.

C. He felt very sad. D. He felt astonished.

11. Who showed the right way to the interviewee according to the passage?

A. Someone we don’t know.
C. The secretary did so.

B. The writer did it for himself.

D. A warm-hearted old lady did such a thing.

Motherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age by bathing
the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.

Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better
in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes
that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(早老痴呆症).
University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will
translate into humans.

“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain,
including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,”
Kinsley said.

“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added
in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.”

Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having
had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.

“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother
from the neck down,” said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the
实用文档

Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.

“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals
who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes
through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant—that is a great change in
her behavior that showed in genetic alterations (改变) to the brain.”

12. How do scientists know “Motherhood may make women smarter”?

A. Some researchers have told them.

B. Many women say so.

C. They know it by experimenting on rats.

D. They know it through their own experience.

My father had always been an alert observer of human character. Within seconds of meeting
someone, he could sum up their strengths and weaknesses. It was always a challenge to see
if any of my boyfriends could pass Dad’s test. None did. Dad was always right---they didn’t
pass my test either. After Dad died, I wondered how I’d figure it out on my own.

That’s when Jack arrived on the scene. He was different from any other guy I’d dated.
He could sit for hours on the piano bench with my mother, discussing some posers. My brother

Rick loudly announced that Jack wasn’t a turkey like the other guys I’d brought home. Jack
passed my family’s test. But what about Dad’s?

Then came my mother’s birthday. The day he was supposed to drive, I got a call. “Don’t
worry,” he said, “but I’ve been in an accident. I’m fine, but I need you to pick me up.”

When I got there, we rushed to a flower shop for something for Mom. “How about
gardenias?” Jack said, pointing at a beautiful white corsage(胸花). The florist put the
corsage in a box.

The entire ride, Jack was unusually quiet. “Are you all right?” I asked. “I’ve been
doing a lot of thinking,” he said. “I might be moving.” Moving? Then he added, “Moving
in with you.” I nearly put the car on the sidewalk. “What?” I asked. “I think we should
get married,” he said. He told me he’d planned his proposal in a fancy restaurant, but
after the accident, he decided to do it right away. “Yes,” I whispered. We both sat
dumbfounded, tears running down our cheeks. I’d never known such a tender moment. If only
Dad were here to give his final approval.

“Oh, let’s just go inside.” Jack laughed. My mother opened the door. “Happy
Birthday!” we shouted. Jack handed the box to her. She opened it up. Suddenly, her eyes
were filled with tears. “Mom, what’s wrong?” I asked. “I’m sorry,” she said, wiping
her eyes. “This is only the second gardenia corsage I’ve ever received. I was given one
years ago, long before you kids were born.” “From who?” I asked. “Your father,” Mom
said. “He gave me one right before we were engaged.” My eyes locked on Jack’s as I blinked

WASHINGTON—Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for foreign
teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer.

It is not easy, even desperate.

“We have many children left to place—40 out of 75,” said Straub, who works for a foreign
实用文档

exchange programme called LEC.

When foreign exchange programmes started 50 years ago, more families were acmodating.
For one thing, more mothers stayed at home. But now, increasing numbers of women work outside
the home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families
for the 30, 000 teenagers who e from abroad every year to spend an academic year in the United
States, as well as the thousands more who take part in summer programmes.

School systems in many parts of the U.S., unhappy about accepting non- taxpaying students,
have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time,
the idea of hosting foreign students is being less exotic(有异国情调的).

In search for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are
increasingly broadening their requests to include everyone from young couples to the retired.

“We are open to many different types of families,” said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional
director for ASSE, a 25-year-old programme that sends about 30,000 teenagers on academic-year
exchange programmes worldwide.

For elderly people, exchange students “keep us young—they really do”, said Jen Foster,
who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Post from Denmark.

Last year, A Bite of China, made by CCTVs Documentary Channel, sparked discussion not
only on Chinese food ,but also on locally made documentary programs.

When you think of documentaries, you may think of them as long, boring programs. But
documentaries can be wonderful and bring stories from the real world into our homes. With
fascinating footage(影片片段) and stories, documentaries encourage us to think about
interesting issues we wouldn’t necessarily know about.

So, what makes a good documentary, and what should we pay attention to when we watch
one? Here, we offer a few easy strategies to help you get the most out of watching
实用文档

documentaries.

Pay attention to the themes

While watching a documentary, keep your eyes and ears peeled for the themes people talk
about and what ideas they focus on. Is it meant to be informative or raise a certain emotional
response?

Think critically

Listen to what the people in the documentary are saying and ask yourself the following
questions: If you were debating with someone or introducing a new concept, would you say
the things the people in the documentary are saying? Do the arguments make sense?

Check the sources

If you’re sitting at the puter and can’t think of anything to do, why not look up the
points the documentary made and see if they are accurate? You could even read more about
what is presented in the documentary.

Who are the creators?

The creators or financial backers of a film will usually be involved with how the subject
matter is presented. For instance, as the documentary xx: Obama’s America was directed in
large part by a conservative writer, it’s not surprising that it’s critical of President
Obama from the beginning.

When I was 11, I threw a glance into Dad’s lunch box and made the unexpected discovery
that my mother still showed her love towards my father. The evidence, a napkin resting on
top of the sandwiches packed in wax paper, was certain “Love you!” she had written on the
napkin. “ Meat loaf for supper!”

Mom penned all kinds of messages to Dad on those paper napkins, and he saved a whole
pile of them. What embarrassed me as a kid has bee a precious memory of my parents.

It also started my own brand of lunch box notes. When my kids were young, I’d glue little
drawings on their lunches. Lots of sketches(素描) of our dog, Max, along with smiling flowers.
When they were teenagers, I’d copy words of wisdom from great people, Einstein, for example,
or Bruce Springsteen. Then, my kids grew up making their own handwritten notes. And my husband
writes me love notes on recycled paper, because he’s all about being green.

Friends who know about my lunch box notes eagerly share stories of their own family
traditions. So many focus on food. Maura’s mom always drew hearts on the shells of hard-boiled
eggs. Melinda wrote messages on her kids’ bananas.

We’re into the third generation of lunch box notes in our home. Whenever my 3-year-old
grandson, Clayton, spends the night, he knows his lunch is going to have a napkin note from
Grandma in the morning. Last week, I drew a picture of me, waving widely and shouting his name.

He took one look at it and screamed, “ Where’s Grandpa?” I added a man in a clean shirt.
“ You forgot his tie,” he said. I quickly drew a line of stripes(条纹) down the front of
the shirt. Clayton smiled. “Grandpa,” he whispered, running his fingers across the napkin.
“It’s you!”

21. When the author first saw Dad’s lunch box notes, she felt ______.

A. moved B. awkward C. proud D. nervous

22. What did the author put in the lunch boxes when her kids were in their teens?

Living near the beach may e with an extra perk (利益): better health. A new study analyzed
information from more than 48 million people in England and found that the nearer they lived
to the coast, the more likely people were to report good health within the past year.

Living near the coast may be associated with better health because the seaside environment
reduces stress, the researchers said. They pointed to another British study that found that
实用文档

people who took trips to the coast experienced more feelings of calmness and relaxation than
those who visited urban parks or the countryside.

The difference from living near the coast was relatively small. But a small effect, when
applied to an entire population, can have a substantial impact on public health, said study
researcher Ben Wheeler of Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Exeter, England.

However, it’s too soon to advise people to hit the beach to improve health, Wheeler
said. The study only found an association, not a cause-effect link, and it’s possible that
other factors could explain the results. For instance, it could be that people who are
wealthier, and therefore healthier, are more able to move to desired locations such as the
coast, Wheeler said, a phenomenon known as the migrant effect. But the study did find that
the association between coastal living and better health was strongest for those living in
the poorest areas, which perhaps indicates that wealth cannot explain the results, Wheeler
said.

Because the study looked at only England—an island country in which everyone lives within
72 miles of the coast—it’s not clear whether the findings would apply to other populations.
Far from England, a health expert not involved in the study said that while the British
research certainly doesn’t prove that people’s health and the place they live are linked,
it’s possible that proximity to the seas does something for our bodies.

If future studies confirm the results, the next step would be to find out it is what
coastal environments that can benefit health. Wheeler said it may then be possible to bring
those benefits to people living in other areas, through virtual environments, for instance.

Along with an introduction about his background, Beever includes a description of the

Beever’s artwork is truly jaw drooping. You’re sure to spend ages turning the leaves

People are being lured (引诱) onto Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service without
realizing they’re paying for it by giving up large amounts of personal information. Facebook
then attempts to make money by selling their data to advertisers that want to send targeted
messages.

Most Facebook users don’t realize this is happening. Even if they know what the pany
is up to, they still have no idea what they’re paying for Facebook because people don’t
really know what their personal data is worth.

The biggest problem, however, is that the pany keeps changing the rules. Early on, you
keep everything private. That was the great thing about facebook — you could create your
own little private network. Last year, the pany changed its privacy rules so that many things
— your city, your photo, your friends' names—were set, by default (默认) to be shared with
everyone on the Internet.

C. an advertisement for a new book.
实用文档

According to Facebook’s vice-president Elliot Schrage, the pany is simply making changes
to improve its service, and if people don’t share information, they have a “less satisfying
experience”.

Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original
business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page, totally
failed. Who wants to look at ads when they’re online connecting with their friends?

The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April,
Senator(议员) Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged
the Federal Trade mission to set guidelines for social-networking sites. “I think the senator
rightly municated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people
could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.

I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy is only the beginning,
which is why I’m considering deactivating(撤销) my account. Facebook is a handy site, but
I’m upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don’t know. That’s
too high a price to pay.

32. What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?

A. It is a website that sends messages to targeted users.

B. It makes money by putting on advertisements.

C. It provides loads of information to its users.

D. It profits by selling its users’ personal data.

33. Why does Facebook make changes to its rules according to Elliot Schrage?

A. To provide better service to its users.
C. To improve its users’ connectivity.
B. To follow the Federal guidelines.

D. To expand its scope of business.

A. Setting guidelines for advertising on websites.

B. Banning the sharing of users’ personal information.

Can you imagine being savagely attacked by a dog? What if the attack was so severe that
your nose, lips and chin were pletely destroyed? How would you feel about yourself? Would

Last November Isabelle was attacked and mauled by her own dog. The attack was so severe
that her lower face was damaged; it seemed, almost beyond repair. She was rushed to hospital

it.I thought it would be blue and swollen but it was already beautiful.

Now, less than a year after her 15-hour operation, she' s trying to rebuild her life
and there is no doubt how she feels about her new face: .Lots of people
write saying that I need to go on, that it' s wonderful. It' s a miracle somehow.

Although there were ethical questions raised about their decision to carry out the
procedure, the doctors who operated on Isabelle are quick to defend their decision.

An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn
builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more fortable. The structures
offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has
wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.

Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an
active railroad. On a recent day, Mr. Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men
hug. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr.
Kloehn also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the
artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.

In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what
he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags
bee roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part bee windows. Nails, screws
and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical
device to the house. The device is powered by the sun.

Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some
of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.

Mr. Kloehn says his work is not a social project. He says he is just someone using his
skills to help his homeless neighbors.

Researchers in Hungary have confirmed something many dog owners have long suspected:
that canines understand our feelings.

Using a Magnetic Resonance Scanner, or MRI, scientists found that when it es to emotions,
dogs’ brains are similar to those of humans. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab
environment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still
even in an MRI scanner. That’s how researchers in Hungary’s ELTE University were able
to get images of their brains at work.

Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs’
relationship with humans. “We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar

social environment, but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar brain
mechanisms(大脑机制)to process social information,”said Andics.

After training 11 dogs to stay motionless while their brains were scanned, the
researchers checked their neurological(神经系统的)responses to about 200 emotionally
significant sounds, from whining and crying to playful barking and laughing. They then
pared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities.

Andics says it opens new possibilities for research. “It establishes a foundation of
a new branch of parative neuroscience, because until now it was not possible to measure
the brain activities of a non-primate(非人灵长类动物)and the primate brain in a single
experiment,” said Andics.

And what that tells ordinary dog owners, the Hungarian scientists say, is to treat your
canine panions as friends, not mere animals, because they evidently understand human
feelings.

25. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Dog’s behaviors are the same as those of humans.

B. Usually dogs can sit still in a lab environment.

C. Dog owners shouldn’t treat dogs as their friends.

After having more than a few acquaintances (相识的人) online, it might e a blow to keen
social networkers like Barack Obama, or even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg himself.

According to a research, the average person has in fact twice as many online friends as
physical ones. Users of social-networking sites have on average 121 online friends as pared
with physical ones. The study also claims that people tend to be more open, confident and
honest with their virtual friends than their “real” ones.

“For most people , the Internet is a way of keeping in touch with loved ones and friends,
but for people who are isolated(隔离的) due to illness, it plays a more vital role, and
can often act as a lifeline.”says Helen Oxley, a psychologist at Wythenshawe hospital.

“People with illnesses often rely on the Internet to facilitate(促进) friendships,
since they blog and use networking sites as a way of dealing with their illness. It can foster
(培养) a sense of social connection for those who frequently feel isolated, which is
important to psychological well-being.”

In wider society, the ways in which friendships are formed are changing, with people
recognizing that they can develop deep and meaningful connections with others that they’ve
never met, and may never meet. About one in 10 people has either met their best friends online,
or believes they can make lifelong friends on the Web.

The findings highlight how social introductions are also changing. Only five percent would
ask for someone’s phone number, while 23 percent are now likely to ask for an email address
or a full name with the intention of adding the person to their social network.

At the same time, however, a questionnaire pleted by 4,427 suggests that 20 percent of

As is known, it is a respectful job to be a teacher serving students heart and soul.
And most people also pare a teacher to a gardener who takes great care of various plants.
Ever since my high school days, my heart has been set on being a teacher. I am now studying
at a teacher’s college, and I am making great efforts to study, because there are so many
things to learn about education. But I thoroughly enjoy my studies, and every day I am amazed
at the great influence education has on the human soul.

I think it is only natural that I have always aspired to bee a teacher because my father
and his father were also teachers. My father is now retired, following a brilliant career,

and it has always been his dream to have me, his only son, follow in his footsteps. Although
it sounds like my father’s dream that I will bee a teacher, it is also my dream and I am
quite willing to realize the dream. I still have one more year to go at university, and after
I graduate, I will go to the western part of China to bee a teacher at a village school.

I understand a teacher’s job will not make me a millionaire, but it is not the prospect
of making a lot of money that has propelled my ambition to bee a teacher. Rather, it is my

Tayka Hotel De sal

Where: Tahua, Bolivia

How much: About $$ 95 a night

Why it’s cool: You’ve stayed at hotels made of brick or wood, but salt? That’s something
few can claim. Tayka Hotel de Sal is made totally of salt—including the beds (though you’ll
sleep on regular mattresses(床垫) and blankets). The hotel sits on the Salar de Uyuni, a
prehistoric dried—up lake that’s the world’s biggest salt flat. Builders use the salt
from the 4,633一square—mile flat to make the bricks, and glue them together with a paste
of wet salt that hardens when it dries. When rain starts to dissolve the hotel, the owners
just mix up more salt paste to strengthen the bricks.

Green Magic Nature Resort

Where: Vythiri, India

How much: About $$ 240 a night

Why it’s cool: Ridding a Pulley(滑轮)—operated lift 86 feet to your treetop room is
just the start of your adventure. As you look out of your open window—there is no glass!
一you watch monkeys and birds in the rain forest canopy. Later you might test your fear of
heights by crossing the handmade rope bridge to the main part of the hotel, or just sit on
your bamboo bed and read. You don’t even have to e down for breakfast—the hotel will send
it up on the pulley—drawn “elevator”.

there is also a toilet in the 12-foot-tall fire hydrant outside.

Gamirasu Cave Hotel

Where: A yvali, Turkey

people lived in these mountain caves formed by volcanic ash. But your stay will be much more

Last year, I was on a plane with my friend, waiting for it to take off. The pilot’s
voice was heard throughout the plane: “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. Our engines
don’t work. We are going to jump-start them. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the
air and see what happens.”

That was all he said. “See what happens?” Shouldn’t we have had a better plan than
that? At that point. I could only laugh nervously. One woman started crying, “Oh no! We
are going to crash!’’ There were sighs of hopelessness and anxiety, and we hadn’t even
taken off yet.

The pilot even seemed unhappy. He told us our one engine was working double time, and
his plan was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air,
and what happened? Nothing. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched down
than applause burst out as everyone on the airplane breathed a sigh of relief.

All too often, people stop trying to achieve their goals just because they don’t have
a guaranteed (有保证的) result. But success will never be guaranteed. The best thing that
you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. While I do prefer planning better
than “see what happens” when it es to flying, it really isn’t such a bad idea for life.

If your effort is to build a business then get up in the air and see what happens! Don’t
give yourself all the reasons why you can’t. Do not wait until you have everything you need.
You never will!

in the air and see what happens! It might not be as difficult as your think. It could be
fun!

33. How did the author feel when the pilot said the engines didn’t work?

A. Disappointed. B. Anxious. C. Curious. D. Relieved.

34. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means .

A. to think carefully before you make friends

B. to start to fly frist to see what will happen in the sky

C. to make an effort even if the result is uncertain

D. to get up from the chair and greet somebody

35. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. We Will See What Happens B. I Survived an Adventurous Flight
