1999

“a man is known by the company he keeps.” how far do you
think that this statement is

justified?

man is known by the company he keeps is a very old and
well-known proverb. it means that any

persons reputation depends upon hishers association or
friends he has. though its also said that a

man is known by his deeds, yet at times the good deeds are
marred by bad company. moreover, if

a person is good but his company is bad, then a time comes
when the bad company starts

influencing the good deeds.

good company is also important for the image of a person in
a society. if a person has a bad

company of bad friends, the people around him will avoid him
because of the image which is

created by the bad company. on the other hand people always
like themselves and their children

to intract with good people. if someone is good and has good
company, others will always

welcome him and will like to be friends.

there are numerous examples around us and in the history
which proves this point. the prophet

muhammad(s.a.w) is the biggest example. he was a beacon
for the humanity and the people

would admire him for his deeds and anyone in his company
was recognized in good words.

similarly, our poet, the poet of the east, his associates and
friends are even known and

remembered today.

in the present times also our parents want us to have a good
company, we should spend time with

good friends and interact with good people. it just clears the
point that man is really known by the

company he keeps.

“history is little more than a register of the crimes, follies and
misfortunes of mankind”.

it is widely acknowledged that history is a masterpiece of
enlightenment, recordingvicissitudes of the world, among
them noble deeds as well as crimes, great intelligence as well
as

follies, marvelous triumph as well as misfortunes.
bewilderment by the evils of the mankind gives

rise to such a statement to the effect that history is little more
than a register of crimes, follies, and

misfortunes of mankind. there is no lacking of people who
agree to the above saying, believing

that history can teach them nothing but the abominable
behaviors of the ancestors, who committed

violent crimes, lived with outrageous follies, and eventually
stricken by a string of misfortunes

that are invited at the wake of their evilness. kept in the dark
until the advent of their ignominious

death, they never saw the brilliance of the history, brimming
with mankind’s vanquish over nature,

noble and selfish deeds, enlightenment and inspiration,
honesty and devotion, which together draw

a magnificent picture of history. history is full of great heroes,
who endowed us with abundant

fruits of man, no matter in the field of philosophy, literature, or
politics. rousseau, the swiss-born

french philosopher and political theorist, is considered the
most important forerunner of

romanticism. he advocates primitivism, attributing superior
virtue to primitive civilization. what’s more, his works inspired
the leaders of french revolution and influenced the movement
of romanticism. as a philosopher, he tried to combine
christianity with rationalism and materialism. his “natural
education” and thought of the freedom between teachers and
students serve as the source of modern pedagogical
movement. in literature, history bestows charles dickens on us.
dickens, the great english novelist with wide popularity, is
known for the essential realism of his portrayal of life among
the poor and the lower middle class of england. thank to him,
the voices of the poor were heard and their lives became
known to the rest of the world. in politics, martin luther king, jr.
is no doubt a hero, who is the foremost runner of the civil
rights movement of his time and a life long advocate of non-
violent resistance to segmentation. he was recognized for his
efforts to bring peaceful change to the us and was awarded the
nobel peace price in 1964. the stories of numerous great
heroes are brilliant registers of history, from which we learn
and admire. yet history is also dotted with ugly veil, form
which we should draw experience and prevent us from
committing the same old mistakes. in a word, history is a book,
a good half of which is good and a small half is evil. together
they push forward the on-going development of mankind, who
will be written into the book of history as the passage of time.

it is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. it would
probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without
abrasions, without disappointments. people would have time
for reflection. such work as they did would not be for
themselves but for the collectivity. competition would

never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a
thing of the past. the stress of creation would be at an end. art
would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its
functions. longevity would be increased, for fewer people
would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous
endeavor. anxiety would be extinct. time would stretch on and
on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.

ah, how uelieved boring life would be!

there is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and
ambition therefore a sham. does this mean that success does
not really exist? that achievement is at bottom empty? that the
efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the
force of movements and events now not all success, obviously,
is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. which
are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on
one’s own. but even the most cynical secretly admit that
success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and
that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are
useless. to believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that
is likely to be deranging. it is, in its implications, to remove all
motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for
posterity.

we do not choose to be born. we do not choose our parents.
we do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth,
or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. we do not,
most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or
conditions of our death. but within all this realm of
choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously
or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in
drift. we decide what is important and what is trivial in life. we
decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or
what we refuse to do. but no matter how indifferent the
universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices
and decisions are ours to make. we decide. we choose. and as
we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. in the end,
forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.

the 19th century american thinker and writer ralph waldo
emerson wrote: “a man should learn to detect and watch that
gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more
than the luster of the firmament of bards and sages.”

nowadays, there are many books about self-support. the
authors express a series of ideas as emerson did. the
difference is that the common books are easier to be
understood. the authors use simple sentences in their works
so that all readers can easily know what the authors express.
but emerson’s self-reliance is needed to read many times. he
mainly expressed four important ideas in this works, including
“the confidence”, “the independence”, “the personality”,
“showing no sympathy to the poor”. “the confidence” is a core
point which emerson stressed in self-reliance. all men should
trust their own opinions in spite of the different ideas. emerson
thought a man should trust himself firmly. “the independence”
is another subject which self-reliance fully elaborates. it
expresses that a man should act independently but not always
relies on the other people. besides, “showing no sympathy to
the poor” agrees with the idea of self- support. in the works,
emerson gave the opinion that the poor are lack of advancing
ideas. the result of supporting the poor is to do harm to them.
at last, to be a self-reliant person, the man should keep his
personality. these ideas are important in today’s society. this
prose exerts much influence on many ordinary people.

emerson believed a man must trust himself and be himself.
many self-abased people can’t express themselves bravely
and are ashamed of their divine ideas just because the ideas
are their own. emerson believed that the man should concern
his own points of view and keep them steadfastly.

in his opinion: “a man should learn to detect and watch the
gleam of light flashes across his mind from within, more than
the luster of the firmament of bards and cages. yet he
dismisses without notice his thought, because it is
his.”(emerson, p7, 2005) from this sentence, it can be acquired
that emerson gave support for expressing one’s own ideas
loudly and bravely in spite of the others’ existence. emerson’s
opinions enlighten a man to keep his original saying in the
face of mixed voices. as an individual in society, a man
shouldn’t suspect himself, or the suspicion from the other
people will attack him constantly. the person who doesn’t
believe in himself will never win the other’s credibility. in
emerson’s self-reliance, it is a little difficult to understand the
meaning. however, “trust yourself” is expressed clearly and
can be known by readers easily. the author showed the idea
that the man should own the spirit of self-confidence and try to
be the true himself. for example, emerson said in self- reliance:
“let us never bow and apologize more. a great man is coming
to eat at my house, i do not wish to please him; i wish that he
should wish to please me”. (emerson, p20, 2005) on emerson’s
saying, it is known that he supported the man to be himself
generously in spite of the other people’s social status. once a
person comes to the world, he is possible to be the best one.
however, many people are generally timid, and they are no
longer upright, they are afraid of saying “i think”, but only
quote motto. as a matter of fact, emerson encouraged the
people to express “i think”, “i am” bravely and directly. these
words clearly prove the spirit of self-trust.
