My daughter Alisa has had a long journey of swimming
which is also beautiful. Alisa suffered some terrible illness in her
early childhood. After years of regular treatment, she (75)
became healthy.
Two years ago, while Alisa was watching the Olympics, a
dream came into her sweet little head—to be a swimmer. Last
summer, she wanted to join our local swim team. She practiced hard and finally made
it. The team practice, (76) , was a hard start. She coughed and could hardly
survive(幸存) her first few weeks. Hearing her coughing bitterly one night, I decided
to pull her from it all. But Alisa woke me up early next morning, wearing her
swimsuit ready to go! I told her she shouldn’t swim after a whole night’s coughing,
but she refused to (77) and insisted she should go.
From that day on, Alisa kept swimming and didn’t miss a single practice. She had a
firm(坚定地) intention within herself to be the best she could be. My ten-year- old
daughter was growing and changing right before my eyes, into this: determined
human being with a passion and a mission. It was difficult for Alisa to accept that she
wasn’t a (78) . But that didn’t stop her from trying.
Then came the final awards ceremony at the end of the year. Alisa didn’t expect
any award but was still there to cheer on her friends. As the ceremony was nearing the
end, I suddenly heard the head coach (79) , “The highest honor goes to Alisa!”
Looking around, he continued, “We all encouraged by her will and enthusiasm(热情).
(80) skills and talents bring great success, the most valuable treasure one can hold is
the heart.”
It was the greatest moment of my daughter’s life. With all she hade been through in
her ten years, this was the hour of true success.

Most of you have found the game in newspapers. Usually it
has 15 letters and starts with C. Now that you have all these hints
(提示), can you tell what it is? The answer is a “crossword
puzzle (纵横字谜)”.
You may not be familiar with it, but the game is certainly p (81) in the US.
First invented in 1913 by a newspaper journalist named Arthur Wynne, crossword
puzzles soon became part of the country’s well-known culture. Books and video
games were made about crossword puzzles. D (82) were even put on trains for
players to look up the words. And over 100 years later, crossword puzzles are still
loved by American people.
At the end of last month, The New York Times published its l (83) puzzle in
its history: a 50×50 square with 728 hints that was five times the size of the
newspaper’s usual puzzles. It may take even skilled puzzle solvers days to finish it.
This kind of love for a game may be hard to understand, but Merl Reagle, one of
the most famous crossword creators in the US, explained it. “Crosswords are a dream
e (84) that no one’s been able to take,” he once told The Washington Post. “The
human mind wants a hint.”
Hints are the most important part of a puzzle. They lead you r (85) to the
words. In a basic Christmas-themed puzzle, for example, one of the hints could be,
“Santa fills it with presents for the children.” The word here is “stocking”. There can
be difficult cultural questions about subjects like Native American history. In order to
c (86) the puzzles, you have to be familiar with the
names of places, people, foods and even farming tools. But
the puzzle is not just there to frighten players with hard-to-
get hints and difficult words. It’s a game after all, so fun
comes first.
“You want to come up with an idea that’s fresh and
interesting. And then you want to fill the crossword with as many good, lively,
colorful words as you can,” Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for The New
York Times, told Business Insider.
This is why crossword puzzles are not meant to be finished in a rush. “I put a lot of
work into these jokes in the puzzle. I don’t want someone to get through it too f
(87) ”, Reagle once told Wired magazine.

I recently watched my sister perform an act of magic.
We were sitting in a restaurant, try to have a conversation, but her children, four-
year-old Willow and seven-year-old Luca, would not stop fighting. The 75 —
over a fork, or who had more water in a glass — never stopped.
Like a magician (魔术师) who makes a group of children quiet by pulling a
rabbit out of a hat, my sister reached into her purse and took out two shiny Apple
iPads, handing one to each child. Suddenly, the two were quiet. They sat playing
games and watching videos, and we 76 with our conversation.
After our meal, as we put the iPads back into their magic bag, my sister felt a bit

“I don’t want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if it keeps them busy
for an hour so we can eat in peace, and 78 , not disturb other people in the
restaurant, I often just give it to them,” she told me. Then she asked: “Do you think
it’s bad for them? I do worry that it is making them think it’s OK to use electronics at
the dinner table in the future.”
I did not have an answer, and 79 some people might have opinions, no one
has a true scientific understanding of what the future might be for a generation raised
on screens. Dr. Gary Small, director of the Longevity Center says we do know that the
brain is highly sensitive to stimuli (刺激), like iPads and smartphone screen, and if
people spend too much time with one technology, and less time acting together with
people like parents at the dinner table, that could make it difficult to develop their
communicative skills.
We really don’t know the full neurological (神经学上的) effects of these
technologies yet. But learning about being alone is the basis of early development. If
we don’t teach our children how to be alone, maybe they’ll 80 know how to be
lonely in the future.

Why do leaves(树叶) change colour?
One of nature’s most beautiful 75 is a forest full of bright autumn colours.
Imagine making art with all those colours of paint!
Leaves in their autumn colours are beautiful. Did you ever wonder why a tree’s
leaves change colour? To answer this question, you need to 76 the important job
that leaves do.
Leaves make food so the tree can grow and have energy. This process is called
photosynthesis (光合作用). Leaves need three things to do their job.
1) Leaves need water, which they get from the tree 77 their stems (茎).
2) Leaves need a gas called carbon dioxide. They take it in from the air around
them.
3) All plants 78 a chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素) , which gives leaves
their green colour. Leaves need sunlight, too. Sunlight and chlorophyll work together
to turn water and carbon dioxide into a kind of sugar. This sugar is the food that
provides plants 79 energy. When they make food, trees give off a gas called oxygen.
Animals need oxygen to live.
Photosynthesis doesn’t just help plants stay alive. Photosynthesis 80 makes food
for all living things. Some animals, such as mice, eat plants. Other animals, such as
hawks, eat the plant eaters. Without plants, what would hawks do for food?

Attending a university is an important part of a person’s life. Today, many people
go to a university to study and train for a future job in subjects like law, medicine, or
education. But, the university isn’t a modern invention. An important o 81 started in
Egypt a thousand years ago.
The world’s oldest surviving university, Al-Azhar, is in Cario, Egypt. It was first
built as a mosque (清真寺) in A.D. 972 to r 82 the daughter of the king Muhammad.
A few years later, learners and teachers began meeting in the mosque. They read and
talked about the subjects of religion () and law. Around the year 988, leaders in the
city of Cairo decided to create a school for higher learning and soon a 83 that, Al-
Azhar University was started.
Because a university was a new idea, the teachers at Al-Azhar needed to think
about what courses to teach and h 84 to teach them. The earliest courses were in law
and religions. In a course, students read and studied with the teacher, but there were
hot and free d 85 among them, too. Often, there was no “correct” answer to a
question. In the years that followed, the new university attracted scholars from around
the world who came to teach and do research. At Al-Azhar, people not only studied
the past, but it was a place for s 86 new ideas with each other as well.
Over a thousand years later, Al-Azhar is still an important university in the world
because its library keeps many of the world’s oldest and most p 87 books. Today
many of the world’s most important universities such as Oxford and Harvard still
follow the same traditions as they do at Al-Azhar.

Do you know who Lewis Carroll is? Yes! You are right.
He is the writer of the famous story—Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland. Many people described Lewis Carroll as shy. He
wasn’t very good in social situations. He didn’t talk much.
One of his college students even said his classes were
extremely
75 . But children thought very differently of him. When he
was with children, he was funny and imaginative. He 76
puzzles and games, and created stories that children loved.
Those children included Alice, the daughter of a colleague, and her two sisters, Lorina
and Edith.
It seems that Lewis Carrol was a wild flower that only bloomed when children
were around.
“Tell us a 77 , please, Mr. Dodgson,” the three girls asked.
“Alice was beginning to get very 78 sitting by her sister on the side of the river
and of having nothing to do. She wanted to do something new and happy. Suddenly, a
white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her,” he began. He continued for a few
minutes, and then stopped. That’s all until next time.
The girls complained, so he offered to go on. That day the stories came out 79 .
He seemed relaxed in his role as storyteller and told many stories.
Lewis Carroll included Alice and her sisters in the stories with Alice as the most
important character. The other characters included an Eaglet (named for Edith) and a
Lory (a kind of parrot) named after Lorina. That day, in particular, Lewis Carroll’s
stories were really interesting.
Later, Alice begged Lewis to write the stories down, and he agreed. 80 , it
wasn’t until two and a half years later that Lewis finally gave her a dark green leather
notebook—Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

My parents were in a huge argument, and I was
really upset about it. I didn’t know who I should talk
with about how I was feeling. So I asked Mom to
allow me to stay the night at my best friend’s house.
Though I knew I wouldn’t tell her about my parents’
situation, I was looking forward to 75 . I was in the
middle of packing up my things when suddenly the
power went out in the neighborhood. Mom came to
tell me that I should stay with my grandpa until the
power came back on. I was really 76 because I felt that we did not have much to
talk about. But I knew he would be frightened alone in the dark. I went to his room
and told him that I’d stay with him until the power was restored. He was quite happy
and said, “ 77 .”
“For what?” I asked.
“To hold a private meeting, just you and I,” he said, “To hold a private meeting
about what we’re going to do with your mom and dad, and what we’re going to do
with ourselves 78 we’re in the situation we are in.”
“But we can’t do anything about it, Grandpa,” I said, surprised that here was
someone with whom I could share my feelings and someone who was in the same
“boat” as I was.
And that’s how the most unbelievable 79 in this family started. Sitting there in
the dark, we talked about our feelings and fears of life. That night, because the power
went out, I found a new friend, with whom I could 80 talk about all my fears and
pains, whatever they may be.
Suddenly, the lights all came back on. “Well,” he said, “I guess that means you’ll want to go
now. I really like our talk. I hope the power will go out every few nights!”

A travel journal(日记) is one of the best
ways to keep a long journey in memory.
While you are writing your travel journal,
many things don’t seem s 81 , but they
often turn out to be what make the trip so
memorable.
It is important to have the h 82 of
writing your travel journal every day. When
you are on a busy journey, you probably
won’t remember to write. You may promise
that you will write l 83 , but that almost never happens. Take a few minutes every
day and put down your memories. It doesn’t have to be long.
Use your “down time” p 84 . There is a surprising amount of sitting around while
traveling. You can always put down a few lines in your travel journal when you are
on trains, waiting for planes, or waiting in line.
In your heading, write down the day, where you are, who you are with, maybe even
the weather and what you eat. These are the details that people are most likely to f
85 . After many years when you read your journal, you will know exactly what you
were doing on that day.
Focus on writing about how you feel. Listing facts and figures is fine, but that isn’t
why you traveled. A long journey is a time for self-reflection(自我反思). Memories
of these feelings fade(褪去) quickly with time, so it is important to write about those
experiences when the memories are still f 86 .
Keep ticket stubs(票根). Whenever you use a ticket for a train or a museum or a ride, stick the
stubs to your journal. They are also a good r 87 of your travel experiences. One day you can
look at the ticket stubs and see exactly what you were doing on a certain day and how much it cost.
