二.英语常见固定用语

美国人平时所用的许多 短语，看似普通，但有的会有特別意义，究竟是俚语、口
语或俗语，没有绝对的定义。其实名称不重要， 最重要的是懂得意义和用法，不
是吗？

1. to have(many) irons in the fire: to have a lot of activities going on
at the same time

(同时有许多事，想马上全部做完，但又不知从何开始，似乎忙得不可开交)

Don't bother him because he has many irons in the fire.

2. to talk over (one's) head(s): to use large or big words so that audience
will not

understand exact meaning

4. to keep (one's) fingers crossed: to hope something good will happen

三.特殊的常用字眼

1. Head Start

如果这两个字开头的字母是大写，则连在一起是一 个专有名词，指的是美国政府
为贫穷或弱智的儿童设立的一种训练机构，帮助他们，希望他们在进小学之 前能
赶上教学进度。

例句： Many poor parents send their children to Head Start.

很多贫困的父母都送孩子去学前预备培训机构。

但是如果head start 的字母是小写，那么就是普通名词了，是指比别人早着手，
或领先、有利，即：advance start or advantage

例句：To know more colloquial expressions is a head start in learning
English.

2. blue blood

是指有钱人或出身富家的人 (rich or wealthy people)

例句： Some people do not want to admit that they have blue blood.

有些人不愿承认自己是富家出身。

Many blue blooded children attend this private school.

许多有钱人家的孩子就读这所私立学校。

3. bed of roses

意思是称心如意的境遇；美好、理想的“安乐窝”(everything seems to be
wonderful)

例句：Life is not always a bed of roses.

生活未必都是称心如意的。

4. from soup to nuts

意思是从头到尾，自始至终；或是一应俱全，完整详尽（多半是指物品方面）。

例如： This store sells everything from soup to nuts.

这家商店出售的货品一应俱全。

My office is supplied from soup to nuts.

我办公室里的用品十分齐全。

但是如果指知识丰富的话，则不用这个词，而是通常用 from A to Z来表达。

例如： Mr. Greenspan knows economics from A to Z.

5. off- limits

意思是禁止入内；限制进出或不准使用，也就是关闭 (closed or not available)

例如： The library will be off-limits to the public until re-carpeting

The teachers have the use of a john that is off-limits to students.

学生不得使用教师厕所。 (john小写的时候才是指厕所。)

6. real bomb

在口语里是指在公众场所或舞台上表演失败或表现欠佳。通常与 real用在一起。

例如： The show was a real bomb, so I cut out early.

这个剧很糟糕，所以我提前退场了。（cut out = leave）

如果 bomb 作名词用，意思就是炸弹；作动词，则是轰炸，或失败、极坏的意思。
(very bad)

例如： A U.S. fighter dropped a bomb over Iraq.

一架美国轰炸机往伊拉克扔了一颗炸弹。（作名词）

= A U.S. fighter bombed Iraq. （作动词）

值得注意的是：有时也指真正的炸弹。

五.美国生活中的口头禅

美国人平时生活上所用的一些「口头禅」，其实字句都很 简单，但是如果不加说
明，往往还会让人「一知半解」或「似懂非懂」。下面所举的例子，即是常常听< br>到的一些美语「口头禅」。

1. I couldn`t care less.

这句话的意思是「我不在乎」，「缺乏兴趣」（lack of interest），也就是：
I don`t care at all. 或 I don`t give a hoot.

例如：人家如果问： What do you think of the budget-cut?（你对预算削减
有何看法？）

你回答： I couldn`t care less.（我毫不在乎）

How do you like Mr. Lees political point of view?（你喜欢李先生的政见
吗？）

I couldn`t care less.（我才不在乎呢！）

但是有时说话者也有「口是心非」：

例如： I couldn`t care less about the promotion or pay raise.（我不在
乎升级或加薪）

而实际上他是根本在乎升级和加薪的，那么人家也许就会回答说： Yes, you do
（care）.

至于 I couldn`t care more. 就是「我很在乎」（I care a lot.）或 I care deeply.
同理：

I couldn`t agree more.=I totally agree.（我完全同意）

I couldn`t please you more.=I did my best to please you.（我尽量使你高
兴）

I couldn`t be more right.=I am totally right.

但是老外为了「自尊」，不愿强调自己的错误，所以很少人说：

I couldn`t be more wrong.

注意：一般人都用否定句，但也有老外把肯定句与否定句互用。

不过，严格来说，I could care less. = I care to some degree.（care 的程
度可能减少）

I could care more.=I care some.（care的程度也许增加）（主词可用任何人
称代名词：he,

she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could，不用 can。）

2. No bones about it.

意思是：真实的，诚恳的（truly, sincerely or exactly），也就是 to make no
bones about it.（bone 要加 s, it 是指 something）

例如：His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.（他的太太真是很漂亮）

Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.（当 A
先生谈到堕胎问题时，他是诚恳的。）

When I spoke on the topic,he said, （也就是他同意
我的看法）

No bones about it;the weather is very chilly today.（今天是真的太冷了）

3. take it on me！

意思是：「这是我的，请用吧！」「这是免费的」(help yourself to it; it is
free)，这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如：

Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (这是来自英国的糖
果，尝一个吧！) (one = candy)

The restaurant owner said to me, 餐馆老板对
我说：「尝尝我的甜点吧！」)

Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧！) (也许铅笔上刻有
名字，做为宣传之用而免费。)

可见 take 后面的 it，是指 something，而 on 的后面通常不指别人，所以多
半也只用在第一人称单数 me。

(假如夫妇在一起，也可以说：Take it on us.)

4. I am from Missouri.

这句话有时后面要加一句：「I need to be shown.」或「You have got to show
me.」，意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn)，不太信任别人，一定要人
家「证明一下」(prove it

to me)，所以密苏里州也被称为「The Show Me State」。

据说这句话所以流行 (尤其在美国中西部) 是因为美国一些名人都住过密苏里
州，包括

Harry Truman, Mark Twain, Walt Disney 等。后来老外不轻易相信别人时，就
使用这句话。(也有半开玩笑性质) 例如：

He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. (他是来自密苏
里州，所以不容易说服他。)

Don`t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.) (别
愚弄我，我是来自密苏里州。)

We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown.

As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith先生是位
倔强的人，他一定是来自密苏里州。)
