Movie Review of Legends of the Fall
To be honest, I don’t know how to review this film. It’s really a
tougher work for me to do than ever before. Mostly that’s the reason why
I had to put it off to review it. And I do not understand why people gave
such a high evaluation to it. It confused me. Even if I had read the others’
reviews about it, I couldn’t feel its charmings. Or maybe there’s none.
Some western critics think that its structure is loose, its performing is
single, and its theme is prude. I’m not gonna to agree with it or not.
Everyone has his own judgement. But I would say it is not worthy my
another seeing. That’s it. It is said that it is brilliant. Well, I really didn’t
think so. The only and most impressive plot to me is when Alfred shot the
policeman. It seemed the family became a whole again after so many
conflictions among them happened before. Is the theme that the families
are always honest, trustworthy, and loved to each other? It seemed that
they are together to defend the most important ones in their lives. If I
were one of them, I would do the same thing. Defend for my familes. It is
not the most important thing--it’s the only thing, I would say.
Most people said who would not love Tristan? Everyone loves Tristan.
Well, I admired him but I do not love him. What should I admire him
except for his protecting his younger brother? It is true that he was born
wild and he always tried his best to challenge the power of nature and
himself. He refused to obey any rule of the world. So what? What had I
learned from watching him? I didn’t see the point. Comparatively
speaking, I like Alfred much more than Tristan. He was so a upright and
honest man that he loved Susannah very much but he hided it inside
deeply because he knew she was his brother’s fiancee, not like Tristan.
Even after she was abandonned by Tristan, he loved her still and married
her. He is the one who always wants Susannah happy even if she doesn’t
seem to deserve it. He is also very sincere to his family. He did know that
everyone loved Tristan, I mean, in the film. My heart can’t help hurting
when I heard Alfred said “I followed all the rules. Man's and God's. And
you ...You followed none of them. And they all loved you more. Samuel.
Father ... Even my own wife.” It made me sting. And he is not only the
man who hnows to love but also knows to forgive. It is not his fault that
he chooses to serve the government. Not even a fault! He is just being
misunderstood by his father who is too stubborn and unjust. What would
his father complain of him? I think nothing should have been. No matter
who is right and wrong, Alfred is the one who suffers most but still first
stretches his hands out to forgive his brother and his father. He never did
anything wrong but he had suffered so much. Howvever, he would never
hate Susannah although she had never loved him even after marrying him.
Like I said before, he always wanted her to be happy. In a word, I admires
him most and he deserves my admiration.
By the way, although I didn’t think this film is good enough, I would
like to say its music and its scenes are quite good. The music is soft and
comfortable that I appreciate it very much. And I was dead hoping to live
in that pasture. It is exactly the place that I want to live in. It seems like a
wonderland for me.
