Introduction: Everyone has a name. It is the unique symbol of himself, but also the
symbolization of his life. One person’s name includes the parent’s and other
relatives’ expectations for him, and also can let others recognize and call him
conveniently. Names contain their culture.
Although everyone has a name, and we take them for granted, what is the
name’s origin, and why we should have a name? When humans began to use names?
And what is the name’s meaning? That is a serious of problem. How find the answer,
it is a question.
Let us imagine this, when people first use names, how can they choose their
names? What kind of names can they be given? There is no standard. Yes, it is true.
But people are clever. If you look white, you will be called Blanche by others, which
means white. Your name can show your character or physical features. This maybe is
the beginning of the name. It is convenient for people to recognize each other, and
also let others know your some information. Maybe that is the origin and meaning of
English names at first.
The same as Chinese names, English name also have family name and given
name. But in the writing and oral English, the English name’s order are different from
Chinese. Their given are at first, and family name are at last. For example, Herbert
Geog Well, the first and second word are given names, the last word is family name.
But American usually uses first name, second name and last name.
English speaking countries, America, Australia, Canada, Africa and New Zealand,
all have the same system of the England about names.
All English full names consist of a person’s first name and last name. Sometimes
there is a middle name between the first name and the last name. The first name is a
person’s given name by his or her parents at some point after the birth of the child.
In Christian countries, the Christian name is often used for the first name. Soon after
a child is born, it is christened. That is, the child is given a Christian name by its
godfather. And this would happen at a Christian religious ceremony like baptism.
So in British, a person’s first name is also called a baptismal name. Sometimes
parents given their children names after the people in the bible. Such biblical names
as Adam, Abraham, Daniel, David, Paul and peter are first name, which are most
commonly used.
The origin of English names
In English people, most of their names have special meaning at first. But with
time going on, some meaning have been dispel. In the different time, people will
choose the different names by the customs of that time. Sometimes people will
choose a Christian saints name; sometimes people will choose a famous king or a
person’s name; sometimes they may choose a popular singer’s name. A boy named
Paul,（Paul is one of Christian saints, he goes to everywhere to spread Christian, the
word itself means small.）but he may not be thin or short, and also his parents do not
wish him to be a Christian. Parents choose Paul as their child's name， maybe in
order to miss his lived in the Paradise grandfather. His grandfather also named Paul.

It is conmen in English speaking countries, but in China it is unbelievable.
In America, if the son uses his father's name, then it will be put a “junior” at the
end of his name, so people can recognize them who is father and who is son. For
example, John Ford Junior, he is the son of John Ford.
English names have about five different origins.
First, use the name to express the people's character and physical features. For
example, a man who named Blanche, maybe his skin looks white than others, the
word Blanche means white. Calvin, maybe he is bald. Roy always has red hair. From
the name, we can know the person's physical character. That is one of the origins of
English names.
Second, use plants and animals name as people's name. For example, Leo is a
man's name. And also it is kind of lion's name. Ursula, at first it is a female bear's
name. Oliver, can be used as a person's name. And also it is a plant's name.
Third, use the name to show person's living condition. For example, Clifton,
maybe he lives near cliff, so people call him Clifton; Ashley, he must lived near trees
at first. Heath, maybe his house is in wasteland.
Forth, use the job’s name as people's name. For example, Penelope, maybe she is
a weaver. Mason, obviously at first he is a mason, so people called him Mason. Ward,
maybe he is a guard. Use this method named people not only can let others
recognize them easily, but also can tell others their jobs.
Fifth, the name comes from religion. For example, Diana, she is a Luna

English family names have their origins. England was mainly a rural society in the
middle Ages. There were no large cites. Some groups of people lived with the walls of

condition.

Chinese, maybe called Edward Zhang in American. Sometimes they use different
words but have the same pronunciation. For example, Chinese last name Li (李), we
can write it as lee in English. They both have the same pronunciation
Sometimes, in order to be convenient to call or write, some people whose last
name are long and difficult always short their names. For example, Frederick, we can
write s Fred, Alexia moan, we can write as Alex Katherine, can be writing as Kath.
As family name's history is shorter than Christian name, but there are a large
amount of last names. More than one million two hundred eight thousand are in
American. But many of them have been exist a long time. So their exactly meaning
we cannot know in today. And also, some last names that we can know their
meaning, but always are different as the owner's feature. In china, Zhang(张)
Wang(王) Li (李)Zhao(赵),are the most common last names. In English countries,
there are also some common last names, such as smith Johnson, Brown Jones
Williams, that’s the last name the surnames and nickname.
In modern times, in the English speaking countries, there has been a strong
trend towards using surnames as given name. For example, Beverley and Ryan, the
surnames themselves are from several of sources. There are also many vocabulary
words such as Jade, Sumer, and Hoer, which originated from Russian names. There

people use to address a close friend or a family member when people show their

informal name for someone, especially one that is used by their friends or relations,
it is often significance. For example, Fatty is for a fat boy, and Shorty is for a short
man. A nickname can also be one altered from a person's real name. For instance,
Hurry for Harry, a nickname can also be called a by—name. Some nicknames refer to
certain part of people, which is different from others. For example, Head Neck, Foot
and shank, these nicknames became surnames later. There are also other examples
relating to a person's physical characteristics like Barefoot, Broad head. Bullhead

English name have its own culture. So it has a deep influence in the modern time.

English people want to their names have good and special meaning, the same as
Chinese. English people think name is the God's gift to people. Generally in English
--speaking countries, a good name should be obeying three rules. When parents
choose name for their child, they also need to consider these rules.
First, a good name should have a good meaning. It’s like Chinese people’s name
every English name has its own special meaning, usually the names meaning are the
parent's hope to their child, so a name that has the meaning as wise .hope .happy,
sunny, are always a good name.
Second a good name should be sounds good, and can be read easily and naturally.

voice.
Third, always the English names have nickname or surnames. A good English
name is also need to have a good surname. Most English name has surnames. It is
different from Chinese name. In English --speaking countries, call a person's surname

surnames, it will be considered as not mature enough, the American president, bill
Clinton, is the surname of William Clinton.
