Cloze
Directions: For each blank in the following passage, choose the best answer from
the choices given below.
Although we should try to find new ways of improving our past performance, we
ought not to throw away all well-tried methods. We ought to see whether traditional
methods have anything to offer us. Probably you, like me, were trained by means of
1 methods, and have had this 2 : you read a difficult text; you cannot
understand it; you struggle to answer the questions 3 it; so you read the whole text
again, and you find that 4 you more or less understand it.
5 the first reading and the last, what happened? Is there a connection between
answering questions and 6 understanding? If so, what kind of connection is it?
Perhaps the key lies in the struggle. The questions that help you to understand are
the ones that make you work at the text. They force you to contribute actively to the
process of making sense of it, 7 expecting understanding just to happen. They
make you realize 8 bits of the text you have not understood, so that you can
concentrate on those bits.
If the key is struggle, then not just the type of questions, but the way they are
used, is important. 9 a challenging question is useless to most of the class if the
teacher simply 10 the correct answer and moves on to the next question without
discussion. It can only help understanding if all students actively try to answer it. We
have to make sure this happens.
1. A. many B. some C. the D. such
2. A view B. method C. experience D. idea
3. B. in C. with D. for

7. A. more than B. except that C. rather than D. other than
8. A where B. why C. which D. what
9.A. Particularly B. Similarly C. Therefore D. Even
10. A accepts B. refuses C. guesses D. expects

Passage 1

The sizzling streams of sunlight were just beautifully glimmering down on the crisp

the dazzling sun and the sudden pitch dark meant no trouble. On the other side of the
road were three white boys from the same school of Jimmy’s. upon recognizing
Jimmy, the boys ran over the street to where he was.
“Hey Negro, what's up?
“Did your mamma pack you enough to eat today?”
“Just shove off and let me be,” Jimmy answered.
It is like this everyday, everywhere, and every time; people suffer discrimination. All
because they are different from each other. Different beliefs, different cultures,
different skin colors. all of these act like building blocks to help construct what we
know as racism.
Racism has become one of the many burdens among multicultural worlds like
Canada and the States. Racism is part of each and every one of us. No doubt, we are
all racist, but the term racism has been used too loosely. Racism has been changed to
such an extent that it could be a reason for war, a symbol of terrorism, and even an
excuse for neglecting.
Is that all there is to it? No, actually it is just the beginning. Racism is just like
warfare in which there is no shelter and nobody is neutral.
Nobody is exempt from this demon. He has haunted us with a bitter curse. On one
occasion, I remember, nobody would play with me at school. I would walk around by
myself and ask people if we could play together. Wherever I went, like the process of
induction, everyone would avoid me, like two inducted poles with the same polarity,
and they would just shimmer off into the distance and continue to do whatever they
are doing. Because of racial differences, they neglected me.
People are afraid of the unknown, and it is this difference among people that
spreads rumors and distrust. Corrupted in our thoughts and reasons, we get
accustomed to thinking differences. For smaller kids, there is no difficulty in getting
them all to play together. Their thoughts are not totally corrupted as others. Probably
the demon has no time to bother with smaller children.

5. Which of the following can best describe the tone of the passage?
A. Provocative B. Indignant ental D. Sarcastic
Passage 2
our culture has caused most Americans to assume not only that our language is
universal but that the gestures we use are understood by everyone. We do not realize
that waving good-bye is the way to summon a person from the Philippines to one’s
side, or that in Italy and some Latin-American countries, curling the finger to
someone is a sign of farewell.
Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after
World War II and marked them GIFT to escape duty payments did not bother to find
out thatpoison in German. Moreover, we like to think of ourselves as
friendly, yet we prefer to be at least 3 feet or an arms length away from others. Latins
and Middle Easterners like to come closer and touch, which makes Americans
uncomfortable.
Our linguistic and cultural blindness and the casualness with which we take
notice of the developed tastes, gestures, customs, and languages of other countries, are
losing us friends, business and respect in the world.
Even here in the United States, we make few concessions to the needs of foreign
visitors. There are no information signs in four languages on our public buildings or
monuments; we do not have multilingual-guided tours. Very few restaurant menus
have translations, and multilingual waiters, bank clerks and policemen are rare. Our
transportation systems have maps in English only and often we ourselves have
difficulty understanding them.
When we go abroad, we tend to cluster in hotels and restaurants where English is
spoken. The attitudes and information we pick up are conditioned by those natives
---usually the richer---who speak English. Our business dealings, as well as the
nation’s diplomacy, are conducted through interpreters.
For many years, America and Americans could get by with cultural blindness and
linguistic ignorance. After all, America was the most powerful country of the free
world, the distributor of needed funds and goods.
But all that is past. American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are
slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing. A 1979
Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans wanted this country to play a more
significant role in world affairs; we want to have a hand in the important decisions of
the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.
