中国结（Chinese knot）是中国文化的典型代表之一。中国结源于古代，当时
人们 用系结的方式来记事，在唐宋时期（theTang and Song Dynasties）逐渐发展
成为一种饰品，并在明清时期（the Ming and Qing Dynasties）开始盛行至今。中
国结象征着团结、友谊、和平、热情和爱情等。制作中国结的材 料多种多样，如
棉线、丝编、尼龙（nylon）、皮革，甚至是一些贵重金属。如今，中国结在世界各地广受欢迎。
Chinese knot is one of the typical symbols of Chinese culture.
It appeared in ancient times when people tied knots to keep records.
It developed gradually as a type of decoration during the Tang and Song Dynasties,
and prevailed from the Ming and Qing Dynasties up to now.
Chinese knot means reunion, friendship, peace, warmth, and love, etc.
Materials used to make the knots are various, such as cotton, silk, nylon, leather and
even precious metals.
Today, Chinese knot is popular in many parts of the world.

聘金（en dowment）是中国传统习俗的一部分。通常，新郎（bridegroom）需要
给新娘家一笔钱 作为聃礼来定下婚礼。但是近几年来其标准不断上升，致使大多
数家庭都很难达到。快速上涨的生活成本 是聘金增加的主要原因。对于大多数年
轻人来说，结婚意味着独立组建家庭，然而物价的不断上涨使这一 切变得越来越
困难。因此，许多新婚夫妇都只能向父母求助。
Endowment is part of Chinese tradition. Usually, a bridegroom needs to pay a certain amount of
money to the bride's family to fix a marriage.
But the standards have become so high in recent years that a majority of families are finding it
difficult to meet them.
The rapid rise in the living cost is the main reason for the increase of endowment.
For most young people, marriage means setting up afamily independently, which has become
increasingly difficult because of the constantly rising prices.
Consequently, many newly married couples turn to their parents for help.

敦煌莫高窟（Dunhuang Mogao Caves）坐落于中国西部甘肃省。这些石窟刻于距
离敦煌东南方向25公里处鸣沙山的 悬崖上。敦煌莫高窟是规模最大、保存时间
最长的佛教（Buddhist）艺术宝库，现存735个洞 窟，壁画（frescoes）4万5千
多平方米。这些壁画展现了佛（Buddha）的形象和活动以 及人与神之间的关系。
敦煌壁画中的舞蹈人物是全人类的一颗璀璨的宝石。敦煌莫高窟在1987年被列
入世界遗产名录（World Heritage Iist）。
Dunhuang Mogao Caves are located in western China's Gansu Province.
These caves were cut a cliff 25 kilometers southeast to Dunhuang, on a mount called Mingsha.
Dunhuang Mogao Caves are regarded the biggest and the longest preserved Buddhist art
treasures, with more than 46,000 square meters of frescoes in 735 caves.
Dunhuang frescoes display Buddha's images and behaviour,and the relationship between Buddha a
nd men.
Dancing images in Dunhuang frescoes are a brilliant jewel for all human beings.
Dunhuang Mogao Caves was on the World Heritage List in 1987.

火锅（hot pot）是中国的传统饮 食方式之一，拥有几千年的历史。在寒冷的冬天，
人们軎欢吃能立即暖身和提神的火锅。如今在许多现代 家庭里，用煤炭加热的
（coal-heated）传统火锅已经被电磁炉（induction co oker）火锅所取代。各地火
锅风格各异，所使用的火锅原料也不尽相同。一般来说，用于火锅的肉类 包括猪
肉、牛肉、鸡肉、鸭肉等，其他的菜则包括蔬菜、蘑菇、面条等。
With a history of several thousand years, hot pot is one of the traditional Chinese diets. In the cold
winter, people like to eat the hot pot that instantly warms their bodies and lifts
their spirits.
Today in many modern homes,the traditional coal-heated hotpots have been replaced by
induction cookers.
Hotpot styles and ingredients vary from region toregion in China.
Generally, the common meats used include pork, beef, chicken, duck andothers, while other hot
pot dishes are vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, etc.

景泰蓝(Cloisonne)是一种古老的装饰金属物品的 工艺。采用这项工艺生产出的物
品也可以称为景泰蓝。装饰效果是这样形成的：首先要通过焊接(sol der)或粘贴
工艺用银线或金线给金属物件勾边，以将其分隔为几个小块。这些金银线在成品

Cloisonne is an ancient technique for decorating metal resulting

此时。在那时唐三彩不仅在国内风行一时，而且 还闻名于海外。
Tricolor-glazed Pottery of the Tang Dynasty is a kind of famous pottery.
Its birth could date back to thetime before the Tang Dynasty.

The pottery absorbed the techniques of Chinese painting and sculpture to form a unique style of
arts.
It is known for its vivid figures and rich colors.
The Tang Dynasty was a time of prosperity when the pottery was prevailing.
At that time, tricolor-glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty was not
only popular at home, but also well-known abroad.

莫言
莫言，因其作品“将魔幻现实主义与民间故事、历史与当代 社会融合在一起”而
获得诺贝尔文学奖，是首位获此殊荣的中国籍作家。莫言生于山东高密，从小辍学，21岁离家参军。许多人是通过导演张艺谋的电影《红高粱》 (Red Sorghum )
才知道莫言的，《红高粱》正是改编自莫言的同名小说。莫言小说中的故事多发
生在高密，在三十几年的 写作生涯中，这个地方激发了他许多创作灵感。
Mo Yan
Mo Yan is the first Chinese writer who received the honor of winning the Nobel Prize in
Literature as his works “merges folk tales, history and the contemporary society with hallucinatory
realism”. Born in Gaomi in Shandong Province, Mo Yan dropped out of school during childhood
and left home to join the army at the age of 21. Many people came to know Mo Yan through
director Zhang Yimou's film Red Sorghum, which is adapted from Mo Yan's novel of the same
name. In most cases, stories of Mo Yan's novels occur in Gaomi, and it's this place that inspires
his writing greatly during his over 30-year writing career.
