The first day of school our professor introduced himself
and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already
know.I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my
shoulder.I turned around to find a wrinkled，little old lady
beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire
said，“Hi name is Rose.I' m eighty-
seven years I give you a hug?”I laughed and
enthusiastically responded，“Of course you may.”and she
gave me a giant squeeze.

开学的第一天教授做了自我介绍，他还要求我们去结识某位我们
还不理解的人。就在我站起来四处张望时，一只手轻轻地搭在了我的
肩上。我转过身一看，一位满脸皱 纹个子矮小的老太太正冲着我微笑。
这微笑使她浑身光彩照人。她说：“嘿，帅小伙儿，我叫罗斯，今年
87岁。我能够拥抱你吗?”我笑了起来，热情地答道：“当然能够啦。”
她紧紧地拥抱了我。

“Why are you in college at such a young，innocent
age?”I asked. She jokingly replied，“I'm here to meet a
rich husband，get married，have a couple of children，and
then retire and travel.”“No，seriously?”I asked.I was
curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this
challenge at her age.

“你为什么在这么年轻而天真的年龄上大学?”我问。她开玩笑地
回答说：“我要在此遇到一个有钱的丈 夫，结婚，生几个孩子，然后
退休，去旅游。”“真的吗?不对吧?”我问她。我很想知道，她这么大年纪，是什么促使她接受这样的挑战呢。

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now
I'm getting one.”she told class we walked to the
student union building and shared a chocolate milk shake We
became instant day for the next three months we
would leave class together and talk nonstop.I was always
mesmerized listening to this“time machine”as she shared her
wisdom and experience with me.

“我一直梦想接受大学教育。而现在 我如愿以偿了。”她告诉我
说。课后我们一同到学生活动楼，共饮了一杯巧克力泡沫牛奶。我们
一下子就成了朋友。在此后的三个月中，我们每天都一起离开课堂，
聊起来没完没了。在她向我传授她的 智慧和经验时，我总是着了迷似
地倾听这个“时间机器”。

Over the course of the year，Rose became a campus icon
and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to
dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed up her
from the other was living it up. At the end of
the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet.
I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and
stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her
prepared speech，she dropped her three by five cards on the
floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into
the microphone and simply said，“I'm sorry I'm so jittery.I
gave up beer for Lent(一种威士忌的牌子) and this whisky is
killing me. I'll never get my speech back in order so let me
just t ell you what I know.” As we laughed she cleared her
throat and began：“We do not stop playing because we are
old;we grow old because we stop are only four
secrets to staying young，being happy，and achieving success.”

在这个年里，罗斯成了校园里的偶像。不管到哪里，她很容易地
就交上了朋友。她喜欢精心打扮，陶醉于 其他学生对她的注意。她尽
情地享受这个切。到学期末，我们请罗斯在我们的足球宴会上讲话。
我永远也不会忘记她给我们的教诲。介绍完毕后她就登上讲台。正当
她要开始已准备好的演讲时，她的5 寸长3寸宽的卡片掉在了地上。
她有些不知所措，还有点尴尬，于是就靠近话筒干脆说了起来：“很抱歉我这么紧张。我为大斋节戒了啤酒，而这威士忌不过毁了我。按
原先准备好了的讲是不可能了， 还是把我所知道的说给你们听吧。”
我们都笑了，她则清了清嗓子开始说：“我们并不因为自己老了而不
娱乐;我们因为停止了娱乐而变老。要想保持年轻，过得幸福并取得成
功只有4条秘诀。”
“You have to laugh and find humor every day.”

“每天都要笑，每天都要找到幽默。”

“You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams，
you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead
an d don't even know it.”

“一定要有梦想。失去了梦想，人就死了。在我们周围有那么多
行尸走 肉般的人，他们却不自知。”

“There is a huge difference between growing older and
growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for
one full year and don't do one productive thing，you will
turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and
stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn
eighty- eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any
talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding
the opportunity in change.”

“变老和成熟是有巨大区别的。如果你19岁，在床上躺一整年，而不做一件有成效的事情，你会到20岁。如果我87岁，在床上待一
年什么也不做，我也会到88 岁。谁都会老，那不需要天才或水平。我
的意思是要通过在变化中持续地寻找机会而达到成熟。”
