A survey conducted recently indicates that the parents who are proud of their
children are twenty percent more than the children who consider themselves as
prides of their parents.
There exist two reasons, which may account for this subtle difference. First,
conservative Chinese parents are never accustomed to conveying directly how
much they are proud of their kids. This tendency to conceal feelings hardly helps
children develop a strong sense of self- confidence. Second, the current educational
system excessively emphasizes the value of academic performance, thus forcing
children to extensively believe that only by achieving excellent scores can they
make their parents proud. This bias unfairly undermines the significance of talents
for art and sports, which easily frustrates children and renders them more likely to
underestimate themselves.
Without the genuine encouragement from parents and the reversal of
exam-oriented educational methods, a kid would never end up with a positive
grown-up.

Recently, having been delighted to see the notice that there is a need of our
reading festival to make a choice among three creative pictures for advertisement.
After a long time comparison, the picture on the bottom right corner earns my
favor.
As is clearly depicted in the picture, there sits a foreigner in front of the
library who is concentrating on the books, immersing himself into the world of
literature and feeling peaceful and satisfied, which turns out to be
thought- provoking and enlightening.
Part of the reasons for my choice is that it vividly reveals the significance of
reading books to students, which provides you with the power to escape from the
hustle and bustle in the metropolis. For instance, whenever you feel puzzled,
confused or stressed, you can always refer to books and consequently find peace
and satisfactory solutions in them.
I’d, however, perfectly appreciate your considering my selection if you feel
that choice and reason are in lined with your requirements and best wishes for
your reading festival.

I’ve just learned that our school English Newspaper is collecting public suggestion

as I’m concerned, it is more reasonable to add the fashion section and abandon the
amusement part. My reasons are as follows.
First of all, the appearance of fashion is an inevitable result of social development.
The progress of civilization has close relationships with the promotion of fashion.
In addition, With the pursuit of fashion, students may try new activities and experi
ence new products, which have enormously beneficial effects on social civilization
and the development of science and technology. Last but not least, fashion reflect
s the standards of beauty in a period, which is always influenced by the values of t
he society and the productivity level. In a word, what suits ourselves best is unique
for everyone and will never be out of date. However, compared to fashion, enterta
inment should be abandoned due to these factors. The accelerate spread of comput
er games construct an unreal world which cause the students’ addiction to the virtu
al world. Only by keeping active in the real world could one really take a meaning
ful life. Besides, entertainment might cause isolation and depression feeling about
life.
Consequently, I strongly propose that it would be better to add fashion and abando
n entertainment.

I’ve just learned that Shanghai Museum is to hold a famous painting exhibition a

g this letter to share with you my opinions. As far as I’m concerned, it is more reas
onable to hold the painting exhibition in Shanghai Museum than in community libr
aries. My reasons are as follows.
On the one hand, it is more convenient for people to reach Shanghai Museum, loca
ted in the center of the city. Visitors can go there by subway and bus and so on. W
hat’s more, Shanghai Museum is much more extensive than community libraries,
providing visitors with a more comfortable environment to appreciate the famous
paintings.
On the other hand, Shanghai Museum, a well-known and distinguished museum
at home and abroad, is more professional in holding painting exhibitions. What’s o
f great significance is that not only does it provide advanced facilities and high- tec
h monitors but also offers professional security guards to protect those famous pai
ntings from being damaged or stolen in the process of exhibition.
Consequently, I strongly propose that the painting exhibition is to be held in the
Shanghai Museum.

Today I had an unusual experience , which refreshed my mind. With
pupils I spent two periods of time in a primary school, watching them
learn how to paint. A little girl named Amy, one student of the class,
left me a deep impression with her unique painting.
In the first lesson the teacher required the pupils to paint freely.
Namely , in any way they could draw whatever they’d like to. Amy
was the first one to have a try. I saw her think for a little while, take off
her shoes, then dip her feet slightly into the paintink. Much to my
surprise, in a flash she managed to make a nice design on a broad
piece of white paperblanket with both of her feet. What happened
next, various of types of works painted by other children appearing
before my eyes one by one ,kept me laughing with joy and
amusement.
Following a break, the second class began. smiling ,the teacher
made a brief comment, which was full of praise as well as appreciation.
After that ,she gave the students some guidance about the traditional
way of painting. With her teachers’ words in mind , Amy practiced
again. Painting-brush in hand ,she sat a desk properlystraight ,paying
full attention to her work. This time，with ease and excitement she
drew some birds flying high in the sky sun.
Looking back at the two ways of giving a class, I have to admit the
teacher was well worth following in matters of cultivating “flowers”
in the spirit of originality. Given that children are of great imagination
and elasticity in their growth , they are supposed to be given as many
chances and opportunities as possible in the course of being
educated so as to develop their potential to the full. Were the young
always confined to the established ways of doing things without a
free world ,one that is also longed for by the ambitious birds drawn
by Amy , how can we expect the next generation our civilized
nation would be more innovative and creative ?
