At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his
neighbors’ home. Then they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went

Taking a deep breath, he moved around in the overwhelming darkness. Because the house had a
similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. Then he heard a soft but clear

moan. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound,
feeling around for any sign of the girl. Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled
Tiara toward him, scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran
blindly into the blackness…
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later and spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was
released from the hospital after a few days. The fire worsened Surrell’s pulmonary condition, and he feels
the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It’s a
small price to pay,” he says. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.”

After years of trying, our neighbors convinced my parents that ice fishing would be a fun winter
getaway from our dairy farm. Before that, their idea of entertainment involved driving around the
countryside to see how the neighbors’ crops were doing.
My parents eventually built a fish house and set it up on Wood Lake. We excitedly headed for the lake
on many January and February weekends. By the time we arrived at our favorite fishing spot across the
lake each day, somebody had usually made a clear path across the ice. The fish houses were together at the
best fishing spots, forming some kind of a neighborhood.
Our house was large enough so all four of us could fish at the same time. Each corner had a square cut
out of the floor. We sat in comfort. You’d think ice fishing would be cold, but we had a small woodstove
(木炉) inside, and we put snow around the bottom of the house to keep the wind from blowing underneath.
Besides the thrill of watching your bobber (钓鱼浮标) dip below the water, lunch was always the

highlight of the day. Mom would fry pork or hamburgers in a pan. The smell of cooking meat was the envy
of every other fish house in the neighborhood.
Our days passed with a mix of quiet time and family chatter. We talked about the farm or school. And
of course, we shared fishing advice. Part of the fun of ice fishing was learning to understand and trust the
sounds of the frozen lake. Healthy ice “talks” as it freezes and shifts. You could often hear the sound of a
crack traveling through the ice.
People who have never tried ice fishing may not think it sounds very exciting, but it was for us.
Fishing trips were an adventure. We didn’t always catch fish, but we always brought home great memories
of a day with family and friends.

Now imagine you’re Lady Gaga. Bill Gates. A scuba diver. An architect. You still have the pants.
What other uses come to mind?
What you just practiced—the conscious act of “wearing” another self—is an exercise that, according
to psychiatrist Srini Pillay, MD, is essential to being creative.
One problem about our understanding of creativity is that we tend to connect it to our concept of self:
Either we’re “creative” or we aren’t, without much of a middle ground. “I’m just not a creative person!” a
frustrated student might say in art class.

Dr. Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has spent a good part of his career challenging
these ideas. He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to reject the old advice that
urges you to “believe in yourself.” In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.
Dr. Pillay points to a 2016 study where the authors – educational psychologists Denis Dumas and
Kevin Dunbar-divided their college-student subjects into three groups, instructing one group to think of
themselves as “poets” and another to imagine they were “librarians” (the third group was the control). The
researchers then presented all the participants with ten ordinary objects, including a fork, a carrot, and a
pair of pants, and asked them to come up with as many different uses as possible for each one.
Those who were asked to imagine themselves as poets came up with the widest range of ideas,
whereas those in the librarian group had the fewest. Meanwhile, the researchers found only small
differences in students’ creativity levels across academic majors. In fact, the physics majors pretending to
be poets came up with more ideas than the art majors did.
These results, write Dumas and Dunbar, suggest that creativity is not an individual trait but a “product
of context and perspective.” Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.

The cane toad (海蟾蜍) was imported to Australia in 1935 to protect sugarcane crops. 31
Experts estimate that there are currently over 200 million samples spread across Northern Australia, and the
numbers are only growing. The increasing population is proving to be deadly for many native Australian
animal species that hunt the toads as food. 32
While some animals have learned to completely avoid the frogs, the Australian monitor lizards
continue to be killed by them. The lizards that catch small animals love eating cane toads. 33 It takes

Remembering my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when
you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It
turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I
got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces
to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to
strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.
