mother. Year after year, time passed quickly. But Feigles never forgot her dream. After working as
a hairdresser (理发师) for twenty years, she finally decided to change her life, when she was
already forty-four.

Feigles first went to a night school to learn high school lessons. After a few months, she applied

understand what the teacher taught in class. She also had to work at night. After work, she kept
learning until very late. She thought about giving up many times, but she never really did that.
After a lot of such hard days, Feigles graduated (毕业) successfully and soon became an engineer!

language ability,” said a teacher during a school meeting last term. “Students who wish to learn
more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday. I am
sure you won't be disappointed(失望的).”

After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a
chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a
place where I had wanted to go since years ago.

As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us.
After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host
family(寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a
daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of
things from them, too.

The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to
take us in his car. Then we would have classes or go on a sightseeing trip to different places of
interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. We would go back to

4.阅读下列短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Social media plays an important role in our lives. We check our social

media accounts(账户) such as emails and Facebook almost every day. Lately, people like
posting pictures just for the purpose of getting others' attention through their “flowers”, no
matter whether these pictures are good or not. Recently, I was very annoyed with these types of
posts, so I decided to stop using social media for one week.

After not using social media for a week, I can honestly say that everything has changed. Before
last week, I used to check Facebook more than five times a day, as well as of my other social
accounts, and I couldn't understand why I did that. Now I check Facebook much less.

People are so obsess(迷恋的) with posting pictures that have no meaning to them just for the
purpose of posting something online. Whenever I look at Instagram, all of the comments on
pictures are the same. People depend on how many “likes” they get on what they post as an
achievement. I just want to say, “None of it matters!” As I start to fully understand this now, I
wonder why I have social media if all of this annoys me so much. But then I realize that I actually
post meaningful things that my friends enjoy, and to me, that's more important than getting
“likes” on a picture.

Maybe as a society, we are using social media wrongly. I think we sometimes forget that social
media helps us contact with people who are far away from us. I think it's a beautiful thing that I
am able to go on Facebook and feel connected with people that I don't have the opportunity of
seeing every single day anymore.

(1)Why did the writer decide to stop using social media for one week?

A. Because she had very few “flowers”. B. Because she had got tired of the posts on it.

C. Because she didn't have any good pictures to post on. D. Because there was something
wrong with her computer.

(2)What do we know about the writer from Paragraph 2?

A. She didn't know how to use Facebook. B. She didn't like posting things on Facebook.

C. She used to check her social media accounts a lot. D. She has given up using social media
forever.

(3)According to the writer, people should use social media to ______.

A. receive important comments B. learn about other people's lives

C. get “likes” from their “flowers” D. connect with faraway friends and family

(4)What is the main idea of the passage?

A. People should not use social media. B. Technology is changing our lives today.

C. Comments on social media are interesting. D. Social media should be used for good
purposes.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking
home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week
away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank
and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both
acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running,
both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were
still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half
expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining
street-light. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my
apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my
wallet falling to the street.

Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more, and I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard
the noise. Although I searched the street anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to
be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the
street next to me. When a voice called from the inside, Camacho?I thought I was
dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-
haired man with an amused look in his eyes.

It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had
got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city
couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
