Passages 21
College Student's Job-Hunting
In recent years, college students find it difficult to hunt a job.
It sounds very strange since college students are the young elite of
society. They have received advanced education. They are intelligent,
aspirant, and knowledgeable. They are eager to learn and to do their best
for society. But how comes college students have difficulty in finding
jobs?
There are several reasons for this strange phenomenon. One important
reason is that nowadys, college students pursue too high a goal. They are
not satisfied with a merely They care about various factors,
such as the working conditions, the salary, the working place (in the city
or in the countryside), etc. Therefore, although there are many majors
some students study in college do not fit in with the demands of the vacant
jobs waiting for the college students, they are unwilling to accept them.
Another reason is that the vacant jobs. So they can only let the jobs pass
by regretfully.
How to solve this problem? In my opinion, the gap between the jobs'
demands and college students’ demands should be bridged. The companies
or factories should offer favorable conditions for college students,
while the latter should not focus their attention only on the material
aspect of a job. They should think more about their future development
and their contributions to society. Moreover, college students should

realize their own defects and further improve themselves in order to meet
with the needs of society.
But how
comes college students have difficulty in finding jobs?
Passages 22
Juvenile Delinquency
Juvenile delinquency that is, crime committed by young people is a
serious social problem. The forms of crime range from stealing, fighting
to robbing and even murdering. Various shootouts and discoveries of
weapons in schools of America have made headlines all over the world.
Horrible mews of school violence in China can also be heard from time to
time.
Reasons for such adolescent crimes are rather complicated. A very
important cause is that children are frequently exposed to shows and
reports about crime and violence form various sources such as TV, films
and newspapers. The easy access to weapons in some countries tempts the
teenagers to wrong. Sometimes young people commit stupid blunders simply
to impress their peers. Moreover young people are inclined to rebel
against the adult world if the society does not show proper care or respect
for them. In China, the emperorshave always been the focus
of attention at home have great trouble getting along in the outside world.
Anyway, juvenile delinquency is as much a fault with the young as with
the society. Proper instruction and necessary puberty psycho consultation
should be available. The young should also learn to be responsible for
both themselves and the society.
Passages 23
Violence On TV
Very often you can see violence programs as soon as you turn on TV.
Generally speaking, violence occurs in urban areas. In violence programs

you can see criminals robbing pedestrians of their belongings and then
getting away. There are also smugglers who traffic in drugs to seek huge
profits and they murder each other for the money. They even kill the
policemen of law enforcement. Therefore, city residents feel threatened
by violence here and there.
The influence of TV violence on teenagers is far- reaching. Most of
the heavy viewers see the world we live in as more dangerous than it really
is. And they demand more protection from the police. Recent surveys
indicate that influence of TV violence is associated with education,
occupation and age. Usually well-educated people have less influence. The
younger one is and the more he watches TV violence, the more he is affected.
Influenced by violence programs, some of the young adults are involved
in murder cases. As a result, parents and teachers are worrying about the
harmful effect of TV violence on children.
In my opinion, TV violence contributes to violent acts of teenagers.
Hence, children should be advised to watch as few violence programs as
possible.

Passages 24
Air Travel
Many people prefer to travel by air. This is because air travel had
some advantages. In the first place, airplane, the miracle created by man,
is the fastest means of transport. It takes the least time for one to travel
by air from one place to another. Secondly, travelling by air is convenient
and comfortable. Friendly airhostesses are affectionate and considerate.
They look after passengers all the way to their destinations. Moreover,
on long distance flights there are films and music for people to entertain
themselves.
As a popular saying goes. has two same is true
of air travel. It had some disadvantages, too. For one thing, air travel
costs a great deal. The average Chinese are not rich enough to afford
expensive airfares. So they prefer to take trains, which save a lot of
money. For another, although passengers are assured of their safety, they

are still worried about it during the journey because flying always
involves more or less risk.
As far as I am concerned, the advantages mentioned above exceed the
disadvantages. If I were given choice between travelling by air and
travelling by train, I would certainly prefer the former. For me, time
is money and it is the most important thing I have to take into
consideration whatever I do.

Passages 25
The Normal Working Week Should Be 30 Hours
It is extraordinary that in the improvements in working conditions
in this country, the average working week is still over 40 hours in most
European. Countries, and on top of that a large number of workers do
several hours' overtime. This seems ridiculous when unemployment is so
high. If the working week were only 30 hours, everyone would have more
spare time and most of the unemployed people could find work.
Of course, those who oppose a reduction in the working week argue that
people would not know what to do with their leisure, and anyway the country
could not afford it, because we are continually going told to work harder.
Yet the main reason why people do not work hard enough is because they
are tired, and the main reason why they do overtime is because they earn
more money during those extra working hours, so they prefer to work slowly
so that overtime will be necessary.
I would certainly favour a shorter working week to give people time
to pursue their own interests, but I would provide more entertainment
facilities and educational course for them to develop these interests.
They in turn would provide more employment. The main argument against a
30-hour week is that companies could not afford it, but if there were no
unemployment and everyone went to work feeling fresh and relaxed, they
would do as much as they do now and would not be worried by the fear of
losing their jobs.

Passages 26
Successful Language Learners
Some people seem to have a knack for leaning languages. They can pick
up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new
language more quickly than others. Perhaps if we take a close look at these
successful language learners we may discover a few techniques which make
language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners.
Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the
patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look
for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess
again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore,
successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they
look for such a chance. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or
to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again.
When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is
inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to think in the
language than to know the meaning for every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose.
They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language
and the people who speak it . It is necessary for them to learn the language
in order to communicate with these people and learn them.
What kind of language learner are you? If you are successful, you have
probably been hearing independently, actively, and purposefully. On the
other hand, if your language learning has been less than successful, you
might do well to try some of the techniques outlined above.
