there are also less fantastic explanations available. / Although some sightings of UFOs are difficult to explain, most can be
explained quite easily. / In many cases the observers might have made a mistake. / They might have seen a weather balloon or
an aircraft. / Or the light they saw in the sky might have been light from the ground, / reflected on to the clouds. / However, the
exact cause of many sightings still remains a mystery. /

3. When people are asked to name a language school, / more often than not, they think of one of the large international chains
of schools. / Some of the most familiar names are vast language teaching organizations / with schools in many different
countries, / teaching a variety of languages. / Other well known chains operate in only a few countries / and may teach just
one language. / One of the main strengths of these chains is that their name is familiar to people all over the world. /
This can be a big advantage in the confusing world of language learning. / Most students are often confused / by the large
choice of schools and courses on offer, both at home and abroad, / and so many prefer to choose a school with a familiar name
and an established reputation. / Chain schools know this, / and part of their success is due to effective marketing and
advertising, / which helps to keep their name well known.
4. Marco Polo was an Italian traveler. He went with his father and uncle on many business trips, one of which was to China.
They arrived in China in 1275 and stayed until 1292 when they left the country as escorts for a Mongol princess traveling by
sea to Persia. In 1298 when Venice was at war, Marco Polo was taken prisoner. During his imprisonment, he dictated to a fellow
prisoner the detailed accounts of his travels. His literary work, The Travels of Marco Polo, is perhaps the most famous and
influential travel book in history. With a wealth of vivid details, it gave medieval Europe its first consequential knowledge of
China and other countries. For a long time it was the only existing source in Europe for information on the geography and life
in the Far East. The book became the basis for some of the first accurate maps of Asia made in Europe.
5. In general, the universal language on the Internet is English, or more exactly a vague collection of languages called “English”
because their common origin is the national language spoken in England by the English. That national language has spread over
the world, and several variants such as American English, Australian English, exist. A great number of people whose native
language is none of the variants know English as a foreign language. They typically use a more or less simplified variant, e.g.
excluding most of the idioms of British, American, and Australian English. Of course, they make mistakes, and sometimes the
“English” used by people as a foreign language on the Internet is almost incomprehensible to anyone else. In addition, people
who use English as their native language do not know how to spell difficult words, since they basically know English as a
spoken language. Thus, roughly speaking, the universal language of the Internet is clumsy, coarse and misspelled “English”.
6. It is generally believed that wrist watches are an exception / to the normal sequence in the evolution of men's jewelry. /
Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women, / and then adopted by men. / In the old days, queens included wrist
watches among their crown jewelry. / Later they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. / Until World War I, Americans
associated the watch with fortune hunters. / Then army officers discovered that the wrist watch was most practical for active
combat. / Race car drivers also loved to wear wrist watches. /And pilots found them most useful while flying. / Soon men dared
to wear wrist watches without feeling self- conscious. / By 1924 some 30 percent of men's watches were worn on the wrist. /
Today the figure is 90 percent. /And they are now worn by both men and women / for practical purposes rather than for
decoration. /
