The investigation report of college students' English learning
situation

Abstract: The report mains survey college students' English learning methods and
learning requirements, analyzing the present situation of college students' English
learning in order to help college students to learn English better and provide some
suggestions for reference.

Background
In recent years, the social demand for talents of foreign language level is higher
and questions includes how to reform the English teaching,to improve
students' English level, to adapt to the need of our country in the 21st century for
high-level personnel and students in English learning needs,which is a problem with
open research and needs be solved. To this end, our group members has carried on the
investigation and analysis, and puts forward suggestions for college English。
1. Investigate the situation
1.1 Subjects: southwest university students (including graduate and undergraduate
students, literature and history, science and technology students, etc.)
1.2 Survey method: including questionnaire and interview two had put out
120 questionnaires,but there are 100 effective questionnaires were taken back. The
recovery rate of questionnaires was about 83%. We has carried on the interview to
students after class in order to understand the students' English learning methods
and learning requirements
1.3 The contents of the investigation: the demand of English learning and motivation,
learning strategy, learning conditions and environment.

From sheet 1,Students' interest in learning English are quite different, and only 28.9%
of students are interested in learning English, which shows that most of college
students have a little interest in learning English .
From sheet 2,The purpose of college students learning English is quite simple and
are 43.6% of students is to pass the examination，indicating the
majority of students hold the instrumental motivation.

From sheet 3,more than half of the students use the reference books to solve learning
difficulties, but 40.4% of the students use electronic dictionaries in order to
facilitate, In other strategies, 30.4% of students believed that the most important
way to improve the standard of English is to remember words, followed by reading
extracurricular material.

From sheet 4，58.9% of students like the teaching method which is blackboard combine
with indicated that students are keen an colorful sheet 5，
students in independent study, less using the learning method of modern assisted ,
and 38.7% of students after school enjoy reading newspapers and magazines. While there
are 20.8% of students read nothing after class.

From sheet 6,we can know that most students’ requirements of learning English is to
be able to stimulate their interest in ,the interest has become
increasingly distant from us in the studying background for the purpose of passing
exams .
Through interviews, raise interest and diversity in the classroom in the form of areas:
There are 28.9% of the students want to be provided a variety of classroom forms. For
example,students hope teachers to supplement culture, history, customs and other
topics which relate to the knowledge and lessons in the classroom accounted for 48.3%,
hoping introduce those things ,such as world famous figures, literature, history,
