Cabbage is a good source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Cato the
Elder, a famous Roman thinker 2,000 years ago, praised its medical value.
If you eat it raw, he suggested dipping it in vinegar.
Think about growing head cabbage if you live where the weather is
cool and the soil is moist and fertile. Spring and fall are good times to begin.
Cabbage does not need full sun and grows easily if you water it regularly and protect against
insects and disease.
Cabbage takes about 60 to 90 days to grow. The amount of space needed between the plants
depends on how big you expect the heads to be. Cabbage can be picked any time after the heads
have formed.
Always keep the plants moist, so you need to water it regularly. Watch for yellowing or
black spots on the stems. Yellow or brown areas shaped like the letter V on leaves may be a sign
of black rot infection. Insects, transplants and seeds can spread infections.
On March 17th, many Irish Americans will eat a traditional meal of corned beef and
cabbage to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. Cabbage leaves can be steamed or cooked in a small
amount of boiling water until soften. Cabbage smells terrible if you cook it too long. Uncooked
cabbage, cut thinly, is used in coleslaw(卷心菜沙拉) and many other salads. Sauerkraut is
cabbage fermented(发酵) in its own juice. It means “sour cabbage” in German. Salt is
traditionally used to pull water out of the cabbage. And Chinese cabbage is popular not just in
China. It is commonly used, for example, in kimchee, a spicy(辣的) Korean food made with
fermented cabbage.
( )21. The underlined word “moist” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ______.
A.slightly wet B.very dirty C.sandy or desert D.droughty
( )22. According to the passage, cabbage has many uses EXCEPT ______.
A.medical value
B.making into Sauerkraut or kimchee
C.making into an Irish Americans’ traditional meal
D.making into all kinds of salads
( )23. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Cabbage smells good if you cook it long enough.
B.Kimchee is a Korean food which is spicy.
C.Cabbage can be picked as soon as the heads have formed.
D.It takes two or three months to grow cabbage.
( )24. You probably read the passage in a magazine about ______.
A.diet and nutrition B.health and custom
C.plant diseases and insect pests D.kitchen garden and cuisine

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one

major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact,
eye contact is avoided at all time. That’s not rudeness—people are just
too busy to bother looking.
Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet
reflection(沉思). Nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today
the only acceptable form of book on the London Underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(通勤者). Since the launch of the iPhone
in 2007, over 200,000—yes, that’s 200,000— “apps” (programs downloaded for the iPhone)
have been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-filler. One “app”, called iShoot, is a
game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be
closest to the exit of their destination(目的地). iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you
breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction of
choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music—iPhods are a popular way to pass the
time for all ages.
And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied. Then perhaps you
would prefer a film? The development of palm(掌上) DVD technology means many commuters
watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all this distraction, it’s amazing
that people still remember to get off the train.
( )25. People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because they are ______.
A.busy going to work
B.busy reading books
C.busy thinking private thoughts
D.busy playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films
( )26. Those who like war games can download ______ to their iPhones.
A.iShoot B.Tube Exits C.iSteam D.iPod
( )27. The underlined word “occupied” in the last paragraph probably means ______.
A.delighted B.busy
C.amused D.controlled
( )28. The article tells us that ______.
A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers
B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 200,000 apps
C.technology is changing the way London commuters spend their traveling time
D.with all the new time- fillers, London commuters often forget to get off the train

C
Dogs have complex emotions such as jealousy(嫉妒) and pride, according to a scientific
research that throws new light on their relations with humans.
Animal psychologists previously believed most animals lacked the “sense of self”, which is
needed to experience secondary emotions such as jealousy, embarrassment or guilt. These
emotions are more complex than instant reactions such as anger or joy.
Professor Friederike Range, from the University of Vienna, has shown that dogs are jealous
when they feel unfairly treated compared to other dogs. “Dogs show a strong reaction to
inequity(不公平)”, she said. “If one dog gets something, you’d better believe another will
demand something as well.”
But, her study points out that it doesn’t matter if one gets a better treat and only that the
