Sydney Trains is one of the most economical, reliable and convenient ways to travel throughout Sydney and
its surrounds.
Our network, the NSW Trains Intercity, covers suburban Sydney and extends to the Hunter, Central Coast,
Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and South Coast regions.
The network is made up of several colour-coded lines. Trains from different lines can share the same
platform, so check display screen and listen to announcements.
Ticket prices are generally based on the distance traveled. You can visit for details.
Getting to the City
In Sydney, if you’re near a train station, you’re on your way to the city. Every rail line leads directly or
indirectly to the City Circle. It’s the loop around the central business district of Sydney. Most City stations are
underground so look out for the sign on street level.
Automatic ticket gates
Large stations have automatic gates for entry to, and exit from, the station. If you have an Opal card or a
ticket which has a magnetic stripe (磁条) you must use the automatic gates. You may use the wide gate for
wheelchair, pram or luggage access. Station staff will assist you.
Night Ride buses
Most trains do not operate between midnight and 4:00 a.m. For your convenience a special Night Ride bus
service is available between these hours on most Sydney suburban lines.
Track work
In order for the tracks to the maintained, we sometimes have to replace train with buses, particularly at
weekends. Please check the track work section for the latest service changes on your line.

I’d planned to spend my weekend in the sun, potting flowers outdoors. But that was before the pair of crows
(乌鸦). Out of nowhere, they had set up their base camp in our backyard.
We first discovered our feathered enemies on Friday morning. It was early, and the sound the birds made
traveled through our neighborhood. I figured they’d go away soon. But, no. They were getting louder and
probably annoying my neighbors nearly as much as us with the noise. I admit I got a little desperate.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, I looked out the kitchen window to see our dog Quatchi staring at something on
the ground. I went to explore and found a small coal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed
perfectly still as my dog inched towards it. Only when Quatchi touched his nose to its head did it walk away. I
took hold of the dog and locked him inside and came back with my camera.
It never occurred to me that the young would be hanging out on the ground, growing and gaining strength as
its parents guarded it from above. The second I saw this little creature I forgave the crows.
To be honest, I’ve never been much of a bird person. I also have a healthy respect for birds, and by healthy I
mean slightly fear-based. They’re basically living dinosaurs.
I wish they’d chosen another backyard. There are only so many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can’t do any
gardening out there. But I’m also grateful that I got to see this little bit of nature unfold up close. It’s pretty
amazing.
The experience has also strengthened my desire to create a beautiful backyard garden that attracts lots of
bees, butterflies, and yes, birds. They are welcome here.
24. What is the influence of the arrival of the two crows?
A. They disturbed the author’s life.

B. They frightened the author’s dog.

27. Why does the author write the text?
A. To show an annoying situation.

C
Blind people usually possess one advantage over other people who can see. Their sense of hearing is far
more acute. Bats, whose sight is poor, use a sound location system to help them avoid blocks in the dark. They
send out pulses of sound waves, pitched at 50,000 cycles per second, far above the limits of the human ear, which
can hear sounds up to frequencies of about 20,000 cycles per second. As the echoes bounce back off obstacles
such as trees and walls, the bats are able to take proper action.
The first steps to help blind people to see with sound are based on exactly the same principle. The sound is
given off by an ultrasonic (超声的) torch, whose shape is different from a normal electric torch. It is
double- barreled. It works in a similar way to a sonar (声呐) unit on a warship or submarine. The unit’s transmitter
sends out pulses of ultrasonic waves at the same frequency as the bat and the receiver picks up the returning
echoes. Because these are still above the frequency at which the human ear can pick them up. The echoes are
filtered (过滤) through circuits that turn them into “bleeps” which can be clearly heard before passing them into
headphones.
This means that a person holding the torch can point it ahead of him and scan the area for obstacles over a
range of about 25 feet. If there are no return echoes coming through the headphones, then there is nothing in the
way. If echoes do come back, then the closer the obstruction the faster the succession of bleeps and the deeper the
pitch of each bleep. With practice, the torch could help a blind person to lead a more normal life.
At present, the experimental ultrasonic torch requires a shoulder bag to carry the batteries, cables for the
power supplies and earphones, as well as the torch itself. Fortunately, reducing the size of the electronic
equipment is progressing and it should not be long before the whole set-up can be reproduced in a form small
enough to fit into a pair of glasses. The wearer would face in the direction he wanted to check, and lift or lower his
head just as a sighted person would.
28. Which statement of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Bats can avoid blocks in the dark.
B. Blind people have more acute sense of hearing than normal people.
C. The shape of ultrasonic torch is different from a normal electric torch.
D. The ultrasonic torch doesn’t send out the same pulse frequency as the bat does.

b. Helping deaf children to watch sports.
c. Helping the blind to lead a better life.
d. Being used in a warship or submarine during a war.
A. a b B. a c C. a d D. b c
30. What can we infer from this article?
A. The ultrasonic glasses have been produced.
B. The blind with the ultrasonic torch can walk themselves.
C. The blind should not go further without return echoes.
D. The filtered bleeps would be passed on to their ears.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?

Despite their popularity, only three of Jin Yong’s martial arts novels have been translated into English. But
fans will soon get more from the writer as his most popular trilogy, named after the first of the three books,
Legends of the Condor Heroes, is scheduled to hit bookstores in February.
Jin Yong is the pen name of Louis Cha. And the author, who lives in Hong Kong, is one of the best-selling
Chinese authors alive. With regard to Jin Yong’s works this latest translation project is the most ambitious. The
trilogy, written by Jin Yong in the 1950s and 60s, covers the Song Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty, and
features hundreds of characters.
According to the publishing house, Maclehose Press, the translated work will come in 12 volumes, including
Legends of the Condor Heroes; Divine Condor, Errant Knight; and Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre.
Speaking of the project which she took up in 2012, Holmwood, a self-employed translator focusing on
Chinese-English literary translations, says in an email interview: “It had to be Jin Yong then. It was the obvious
place to start, not only because of the quality of his writing, but also because of his standing and reputation in
Asia.”
Having studied history at the University of Oxford, Holmwood was determined to learn Chinese due to her
previous trip to China. She then went to Taiwan Normal University for language training in 2,009. In a bookshop

there, she saw a whole shelf dedicated to Jin Yong. She bought a copy of Jin Yong’s work—Lu Ding Ji (The Deer
and the Cauldron), the longest of his novels. “What is a bigger challenge for the translator is making the original
pace and excitement into English. It’s all about whether the English reader will be lured by the emotions and
characters.”
It took five years for Holmwood to finish the translation of the first volume. As for why his works need to be
translated, she says: “Many have considered Jin Yong’s world too foreign, too Chinese for an English-speaking
ible to translate.” “And yet this story of love, loyalty, honor and the power of the individual
against successive corrupt (腐败的) governments and invading forces is as universal as any story could hope to
be.” “The greatest loss that can occur in translation can only come from not translating it at all.”
32. According to the passage, which statement of the following is TRUE?
A. Jin Yong is the best- selling Chinese author.
B. Legends of the Condor Heroes is planned to come out in February.
C. Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre is the longest of Jin Yong’s novel.
D. Only Jin Yong’s fame in Asia made him write the popular works.
33. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “lured” in paragraph 5?
A. attracted B. amused C. occupied D. distracted
34. According to passage, why did Jin Yong’s works need to be translated?
A. Jin Yong’s world is too Chinese.
B. Jin Yong’s novel will be universally received.
C. Loss can’t occur when a novel is translated.
D. Jin Yong’s novel includes many noble personal qualities.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Jin Yong, a Great Writer on Martial Arts.
B. Translating Promotes Cultural Exchanges.
C. Louis Cha’s Popular Trilogy to Be Translated into English.
D. Fall in Love with Jin Yong’s Novels.
