idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just
turned 30, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife that I wanted to quit my job and go to
do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most start-ups don't and I wasn't sure what
to expect. She told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I had been a garage inventor. I had
always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.

I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and a
brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him that I wanted to start a
company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened
carefully to me and finally said, ,but it would be an even
better idea for someone who didn't already have a good logic made some sense to
me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in
that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't
think I would regret trying and failing. And I suspected that I would always be haunted by a
decision to not try at all.

After much consideration, I took the less secure path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of
that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.

passion.

(3)He thought it a good idea but unsuitable for didn't support his idea (to start a
company online). He wasn't in favor of his idea (to start a company online). He held a negative
attitude towards his idea.

determine what we get all of us, our choices have a great effect on our life future
finally.

(5)Interest, without which I can't devote myself to the career and overcome the
career prospects. (A good pay.) I hope to choose a career that can lead me to a
bright future.

For all of us, our choices decide determine who we are
finally. For all of us, our choices determine what we get all of us, our choices have a

What is style? Style is the special visual paradigm centering on the visual symbol system. It is
contained in the materialized products of daily life such as fashion, borne, architecture,
horticulture; and environment. It is reflected in the creation of cultural products including
literature, films and music. It is still a way of behavior and life that expresses specific customs. To
sum up, style is not only the core of cultural products with visual, melodic, literal and abstract
symbols, but also a way of life.

The style of China means the expression of Chinese elements. Chinese elements are the
inheritance(传承)of cultural genes. The style of China relies on thousands of years of cultural
accumulation(积累). It should not be limited to objects. It is supposed to express the Chinese
cultural concept of Confucianism and Taoism. It must reflect the specific views of man and nature,
man and objects as well as man and social relations.

The style of China ought to be oriented towards the world. It did influence the world. Silk and
ceramics were the main products traded along the Silk Road. They contained rich Chinese culture.
The thousand- year-old Silk Road spread the style of China to the West. And the craze for
Chinoiserie(中国艺术品)was a popular fashion in European society at that time.

The style of China is the reproduction and variation of cultural genes. It is the inheritance along
with innovation.

The style of China is duty-bound to select as always silk, bamboo, wood, stone clay, glass and
porcelain. Meanwhile, the materials in modern industrial era like meats, glass and cement should
be fully used. Besides, it is necessary to continue the concept of interactive space planning
between man and nature and between man and man. It also needs to explore such new spaces
as digitization, the Internet, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

The style of China must show the transformation and promotion from Chinese manufacturing
to Chinese creation. It relies on the manufacturing power and the industrial strength. The style of
China presents to the world the image of a large industrial producer and a birthplace of global
creativity.

The style of China represents not only the reconstruction of objects, but also the renewal of
Chinese value system.

The style of China ought to rely on rich historical heritage(遗产), draw on strengths of others
and keep up with the times. It should focus on the life of the general public, the world and the
future.

Help Migrant Workers

There is nothing like going home. More so if it is for the Spring Festival family reunion. For a
migrant worker it perhaps means even more. To be able to set out on a homeward journey with
money from a year's toil in his pocket is the best thing he can think of. ________ They had to
press hard for their defaulted payments, the salaries that were failed to pay up.

About 200 million migrant workers nationwide are something left behind by economic reforms
and opening up due to their contributions in the past three decades. It is almost impossible to
imagine life in these places without them. However, they still form a disadvantaged group. Their
rights are violated in different forms. Among other things, unpaid salaries are the most painful of
such violations that are likely to drive a migrant worker to desperate actions. ________

________They have taken measures to prevent employers from holding back payments to
them. Yet, as the financial crisis bites deep, some small enterprises that are struck the most try to
reduce their economic losses by laying off migrant workers or refusing to pay them. So it is
particularly important for governments at all levels to do an even better job in helping villager-
turned-workers recover their unpaid salaries before the Spring Festival.

It is good news that quite a number of local governments have organized special taskforces to
conduct inspections in those labor-intensive enterprises to make sure they have paid their
migrant workers in a timely and fair manner. Construction commissions in almost all provinces
have published hotlines for farmer-turned-construction workers to lodge complaints against their
employers for withholding their salaries. ________ But we need to look for solutions that will
work at all times. We need to put in place a mechanism that will effectively prevent employers
from holding back salaries to workers.

A. Some have reportedly climbed up chimneys to jump to their death unless they get their
defaulted salaries.

B. It is something every Chinese look forward to as the traditional gala draws near.

C. Unfortunately, weeks preceding the Spring Festival have turned out to be hard times for
migrant workers.

D. Hopefully, these efforts will send more workers on a happy journey home for the Spring
Festival with their salaries in their pockets.

E. However difficult the situations they are in, it is too cruel and unfair for employers to hold back
salaries they should pay their migrant workers.

F. Objectively speaking, governments at various levels have done a great deal in helping these
workers recover their defaulted salaries.

【答案】 C;A;F;D

man. The same words could now be said for the company he left behind. Actually, the Eastman
Kodak Company is through. It has been mismanaged financially, technologically and competitively.
________ One of America's bedrock brands is about to disappear, the Kodak moment has passed.

But George Eastman is not how he died, and the Eastman Kodak Company is not how it is being
killed. Though the ends are needless and premature, they must not be allowed to overshadow
the greatness that came before. Few companies have done so much good for so many people, or
defined and lifted so profoundly the spirit of a nation and perhaps the world. ________

Kodak served mankind through entertainment, science, national defense and the stockpiling of
family memories. Kodak took us to the top of Mount Suribachi and to the Sea of Tranquility. It
introduced us to the merry old Land of Oz and to stars from Charlie Chaplin to John Wayne, and
Elizabeth Taylor to Tom Hanks. ________ When that sailor kissed the nurse, and when the spy
planes saw missiles in Cuba, Kodak was the eyes of a nation. From the deck of the Missouri to the
grandeur of Monument Valley, Kodak took us there. Virtually every significant image of the 20th
Century is a gift to generation from the Eastman Kodak Company.________ Yes, there were
photographers, and for relatively large sums of money they would take unnatural pictures in
studios and formal settings. But most people couldn't afford photographs, and so all they had to
remember distant loved ones, or earlier times of their lives, was memory. Children could not
know what their parents had looked like as young people, grandparents far away might never
learn what their grandchildren looked like. Eastman Kodak allowed memory to move from the
uncertainty of recollection, to the permanence of a photograph. But it wasn't just people whose
features were savable; it was events, the precious times that families cherish. The Kodak moment,
was humanity's moment.

A.It showed us the shot that killed President Kennedy, and his brother bleeding out on a

B.George Eastman was not only interested in commercial profits, but also in the
improvement of other people's lives.

we cannot imagine what life was like before George Eastman brought photography to people.

D.For 20 years, its leaders have foolishly spent down the patrimony(祖传的财物) of a

Kodak Company.

A 2014 study found that readers of a short mystery story on a Kindle were significantly worse
at remembering the order of events than those who read the same story in paperback.

The brain reads by constructing a mental representation of the text based on the placement of
the page in the book and the word on the page. The tactile (触觉的) experience of a book aids
this process, from the thickness of the pages in your hands as you progress through the story to
the placement of a word on the page.

Surveys about the use of e-readers suggests that this affects a reader's sense of control. The
inability to turn back to previous pages or control the text physically, either through making
written notes or bending pages, limits one's sensory experience and thus reduces long-term
memory of the text.

Before the Internet, the brain read in a linear (线状的) fashion, taking advantage of sensory
details to remember where key information was in the book by layout.

As we increasingly read on screens, our reading habits have adapted to skim a text rather than
really absorb its meaning. A 2006 study found that people read on screens in a pattern,
reading the entire top line but then only scanning through the text along the left side of the page.
This sort of nonlinear reading reduces comprehension and actually makes it more difficult to
focus the next time you sit down with a longer piece of text.

Tufts University neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf worries that
the day is affecting us when we have to read with more in-depth duals are
increasingly finding it difficult to sit down and involve themselves deeply in a novel. As a result,
some researchers and literature-lovers have started a readingmovement, as a way to
counteract their difficulty making it through a book.

Slow-reading advocates recommend at least 30 to 45 minutes of daily reading away from the
distractions of modern technology. By doing so, the brain can reengage with linear reading. The
benefits of making slow reading a regular habit are numerous, reducing stress and improving
your ability to concentrate.

Reading an old-fashioned novel is also linked to improving sleep. When many of us spend our
days in front of screens, it can be hard to signal to our body that it's time to sleep. By reading a
paper book about an hour before bed, your brain enters a new zone, distinct from that enacted
by reading on an e-reader.

根据第四段the Internet, the brain read in a linear (线状的)
fashion, taking advantage of sensory details to remember where key information was in the book
by layout. ”;以及第五段中的“As we increasingly read on screens, our reading habits have
adapted to skim a text rather than really absorb its meaning.

根据第四段the Internet, the brain read in a linear (线状的)
fashion, taking advantage of sensory details to remember where key information was in the book
by layout.

have adapted to skim a text rather than really absorb its meaning.

根据第六段中的a result, some researchers and literature-lovers
have started a
a book.
easy easier。

numerous, reducing stress and improving your ability to conc entrate.

根据第八段中的an old-fashioned novel is also linked to

A fresh-faced batch of teenagers just began a new school year, but will they get the most out of
it? In the mornings, many are forced to get to school much too early. And at night, screens are a
temptation that's hard to resist. This double whammy (双重灾难) is a perfect lesson in sleep
deprivation (剥夺).

Three out of every four students in grades 9 to 12 fail to sleep the minimum of eight hours that
the American Academy of Medicine recommends for their age group. In most cases, insufficient
sleep results in reduced attention, preventing students' progress and lowering grades. More
alarmingly, sleep deprivation may lead to physical and emotional problems.

It is important to understand why teenagers have a particularly hard time getting enough sleep,
and what adults need to do to help. First, a reminder of the basic biology: Adolescents are no
longer the morning larks of their younger years. They become rewired as night owls, staying
awake later and then sleeping in. This is mostly driven by changes in the way the brain responds
to light.

New technology habits aren't helping. More teenagers now turn to activities involving screens
at night. The growth in screen time is particularly problematic for sleep. The blue light emitted by
LEDs, TVs, tablets and smartphones suppresses the body's secretion (分泌) of melatonin, the
hormone that signals it's time to sleep. Overdosing on screens at night effectively tells the brain
it's still daytime, delaying the body's cues to sleep even further.

Parents should inform their kids of the time that can be spent on screens, and praise children
who show signs of regulating their own media consumption. In the hour before bedtime, there
should be a suspension on bright lights in the home, avoiding devices and harsh LED bulbs in
kitchens and bathrooms.

In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that middle and high schools start
no earlier than 8: 30 a. m., a policy now backed by the American Medical Association and many
other health organizations.

Parents also need to join forces with community leaders, sleep scientists, health professionals
and educators to put school start times on the local, then state agendas.

Whenever schools have managed the transition to a later start time, students get more sleep,
attendance goes up, grades improve and there is a significant reduction in car accidents.

Why doesn't the conductor face the audience?________As the only person with his back to the
audience, the conductor is a figure who is bathed in the spotlight, but his complex work requires
a high degree of musical skill, as well as an ability to extract what he desires out of the group of
artists he leads--his orchestra.

________A person may become a conductor without graduating from the conducting
department of a music school or studying in any kind of conductor's training program. However,

Just as team members today have assigned doing roles, there should also be thinking roles. By
knowing how other members of your learn and organization think---and by others knowing how
you think—everyone can be more productive. So how should you evaluate how you and your
team think? After a lot of trial- and-error, we developed a three-step method that delivers
practical and meaningful results.

Focus. Do you tend to pay the most attention to ideas, process, action, or relationships? For
example, in the morning do you think about the problems you need to solve, the plans you need
to make, the actions you need to take, or the people you need to see? This isn't about picking
one to the exclusion(排除)of the other. It's about where your focus naturally lands.

Orientation(方向). A good way to identify your orientation is thinking about what tends to
bother you in meetings. Are you more likely to complain about getting dragged into the weeds or
about things being too general and not specific enough? These dimensions are
complementary(补充的)to personality, skills, and traditional roles.

Combination. By combing these two dimensions you can know about the thinking style at work
in whatever context or setting you chose. When you know your thinking style, you know what
naturally energizes you, why certain type of problems are challenging or boring, and what you
can do to improve in areas that are important to reaching your goals. Once you know your style,
it helps to share it with others, and have others share theirs with you. In this way, your thinking
style becomes a useful tool---a kind of social currency---for the team. Imaging you put together a
team to work on a new initiative(行动). Wouldn't you like to know who is energized by big-
picture strategy discussions and who finds them frustrating? Who likes to work on the details of
the execution? And who is energized by managing the team dynamics?

The landscape of business is changing rapidly, and we have to find new and better ways to
connect and communicate. We all want to work better together, the challenge is actually making
it happen. Understanding collaboration(合作)through the way of thinking rather than doing is a
practical and powerful step forward.

What kind of Thinker Are You?

Introduction

10.Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence be used
only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Today, in most of the theatres in Britain, the stages are situated behind a sort of arch (拱门),
called the proscenium (幕布前的舞台部分)arch. The arch runs across the building with the stage
on one side of it and the auditorium, housing the audience, on the other. The audience is kept to
the area from which it can get a clear view of the stage. This type of theatre has been is use for
three hundred years. ________ The actor can ignore them until the end, when they applaud the
performance. If an actor wants to speak to the audience he tends to step out of the picture, as it
were—down to the edge of the stage.

________ Stage furniture or properties—– are
now as few as possible. Elaborate scenery is used only when it is going to last throughout the play,
or when it is so constructed that it can be changed quickly. Modern theatres are built with the
stage extending far in front of the proscenium arch, if indeed they have a proscenium arch at all,
electricity, already long in use, has recently had a revolutionary effect. A change of lighting is as
good as a change of scenery, and simpler and quicker; it can light one part of the stage in place of
another. Footlights have been found unnecessary. Curtains also are hardly necessary, since the
stage can be darkened to signify the end of a scene.

The modern idea of having the stage in front of the proscenium arch is not really modern, of
course. It makes our stages much like Shakespeare's. ________ The famous speeches of Hamlet,
for instance, can be delivered more quietly and naturally than they were in the las century. The
actors no longer have to worry much about not being heard, or about turning their backs to the
auditorium. They can get closer to the audience, while a larger audience can see them at work.

Moreover, nowadays, people are finding that modern theatres are built to sit in comfortably for
two or three hours at a stretch. ________ The result of these improvements is that, in spite of the
high price of seats, perhaps more people than ever before are keen on theatre-going.

A. Over the last few decades, since the Second World War, theatrical customs have altered.

B. It makes people feel, as they watch a play or a show, that they are seeing a living and moving
picture.

C. All these innovations have quickened up the pace of the drama.

D. This is an advantage both for actors and audience.

E. Today the theatres are much more comfortable because of the many improvements.

F. Often they can meet and eat in the restaurants attached to the theatres.

【答案】 B;D;A;E

One out of many important things for the whole family to do is to have dinner together.
Researchers began reporting the benefits of family dinner about a decade ago, focusing mainly
on how it affects children. Studies show that those families who eat dinner at least 3 or 4 times a
week together, benefit in many ways.

Eating together helps families achieve open communication and build stronger and healthier
relationships. Children have better grades at school and are better adjusted as teens and adults,
and the entire family enjoys healthier nutrition. For many families, eating dinner together proves
to be a good and effective way to reduce the risk of youth rates of addiction, and helps to nurture
healthier children. It is also a great time to share the events of the day, discuss news and ideas
and just be together and enjoy each other's company.

During dinner time parents have better opportunity to show that they are the prior to their
children. Sitting at the same table and sharing meals is where and when parents can find out
more about their children's school performance, daily activities and attitudes toward life. When
parents have all this information they can better direct their kids toward positive things in life.
They also have better chance to reduce the possibility that children will get involved with alcohol,
tobacco, and illegal drugs.

However, family researchers say that the benefits of family dinner by no means can be
considered as automatic. Parents can sit down to dinner with their kids every day and achieve
nothing. Family dinner may not benefit if there is too much arguing going on, if there is no
meaningful conversation or, what is even worse, if there is just plain silence during gathering.

(1)What may be the best title for this passage? (no more than 8 words)

(2)What benefits can children get from eating together? (no more than 15 words)

(3)How do you explain the underlined word

(4)What information can parents probably get about their children at family dinner? (no more
than 15 words)

(5)What should be avoided at the dinner table according to the author? And why? (no more
than 15 words)

(1)The Benefits of Eating Together The Benefits of Family Dinner Family Dinner
Brings Lots of Benefits.

(2)They have better grades at school and are better adjusted when they are older. Children
can communicate with their parents and enjoy their company.

(3)Raise. Bing up. Educate.

(4)They can learn more about their children's school performance, daily activities and
attitudes toward life.

(5)Silence. Because without communication no one can get any benefit at the dinner table.
Quarreling. Because it brings about a bad atmosphere that benefits no one. Meaningless
conversation. Because it does not bring any benefit to anyone.

activities and attitudes toward life.”
They can learn more about their children's school performance, daily
activities and attitudes toward life.

Family dinner may not benefit if there is too much
arguing going on, if there is no meaningful conversation or, what is even worse, if there is just
plain silence during gathering.”
Silence.

Most people have some regret that they just can't seem to get
rid of. But holding on to regret about the past that can't be changed can have a bad impact on the
possibility of a happy future. Regret is a waste of time, emotion and energy. To make sure that
your life is a successful one, you need to take action to live in a way that you have no regret
holding you back.

Some people make very big decisions with very little consideration at all, and as a result they
often regret their decisions. Before choosing a college major, getting married or accepting a job,
you must think about all conditions carefully and make a conscious decision rather than a
careless one. Big decisions aren't the only ones that require forethought, though. Before you
become angry and say something you will regret later, think about what you're going to say.

Some of things will be easy to do and some will be hard, but keep your eyes on the prize of
living a successful life without regret, and you'll find that achieving your goals might be easier
than you think. But don't just daydream about those goals—make an actual list, written down in
black and white, and refer to it now and then to see what you have left to do.

When you're feeling happy and full of energy, taking care of yourself isn't a problem. But in
those days when you feel like crawling beneath the bed and never coming out again, you still
must take care of yourself. You can do what you want and don't get angry with yourself about
your shortcomings. On the contrary, you just admit them and try to change them and move on.
Improving your mental health is just as important as taking care of yourself physically.

Keep those who are important to you very close and be sure to let them know how important
they are to you. Family, friends, co-workers and people who are as close as your families are your
lifelines that you can depend on whenever you need them to help you remember what's
important in life. You should make sure of repairing your relationships with your friends if
something bad happens.

Last but not least, learn to give yourself some relaxation and not to waste your time regretting
things you cannot change. Treat those things properly and move on. Life is hard, but it is precious.
Don't waste time regretting the past, or your future will get here before you know it.

Green is not always referring to the color. In some cases, it is the term used for being
environmentally friendly. If you've been looking to replace your furniture, consider going green
because environmentally friendly furniture offers many benefits. Here are a few tips to get you
started on your hunt for the perfect eco-friendly furniture.

First, environmentally friendly furniture isn't harmful to your health. Also its manufacturing
process doesn't cause damage to the environment in any way. Besides, by purchasing eco-
friendly products, you prevent deforestation and global warming to some extent in your own way.
You do your part in protecting the environment. Environmentally friendly furniture is cost-
effective as well.

The materials that are used in furniture are what make them green. Materials can be good for
the environment either because they are materials that are considered renewable resources or
they are all natural. A lack of chemicals and toxins (毒素) in green furniture also means it is a
better choice for the environment. It may be hard to imagine that a sofa or a table could actually
be a green product but they really can be depending on what they're made of.

There are a lot of renewable sources that manufacturers could use when building the furniture,
so you should be keeping an eye out for them. Bamboo can be an excellent replacement for
wood and can also replace plastics and metals in some furnishing. Cotton is a sofa fabric that is
safe for the environment and it can be replenished (补充) often. Hemp is also a renewable source
that can be used for fabric and twine.

Recycled materials also can be made into green furniture. Metals can be recovered and remade
into new things such as frames and foundations for sofas. Recycled plastic can also be made into
furniture such as tables and chairs. Touching up old furniture instead of buying new items is very
cheap way to be green. Yard sales and second-hand stores sell furniture too and buying the used
means new things won't be made, so no more damage has to happen to the earth.

Therefore, when you want to hunt for the perfect environmentally friendly furniture, you
should try to know the type of materials which are used in building the furniture.
