阅读理解(二) 人际沟通+实现梦想+课外活动
A [2019·密云期末]
Do you want to become better at making small talk with new people? Do you
want to become better at networking with others?Nothing will improve your
networking ability and your ability to make a successful conversation with other
people rather than your curiosity(好奇心) about them.

When you are curious about other people, you will want to discover some of the interesting ways
that they are similar to you. When you are curious about them, you’ll also be interested to discover
the ways in which they think differently and live differently from you.
When you have curiosity about others, you will be much less self-conscious and your conversations
will work a lot better. Instead of worrying yourself, “What can I say next that won’t sound
stupid?”, you will be focused on learning more about the other person.
Making small talk with strangers can be tricky. We’ve all heard the advice that we should pick
something out of our immediate environment and use that as a main point to start our small talk
with the other person.
It’s true that this can be a great starting point for a conversation. However, when you focus
too much on discussing things like the weather in your city, you can bring the conversation to a
painful end very quickly. The other person will sense that you are trying to make a conversation,
but that you have no interest in really getting to know him or her.
How can you keep small talk from becoming boring?
One way is to watch the other person for clues(线索).The clues they give you are about what
is really interesting to them. When you get these clues, use them to start making the conversation
a bit more about their life, their opinions, and their experiences.
After you have had a couple of minutes to break the ice, try looking for ways to make the
conversation a little bit more personal. Ask the other person for his or her opinion about something
that is a bit more personal but not extremely so. The first few minutes of talking to someone new
will not be the best time to ask the other person his or her opinion on religious(宗教的) or
political(政治的) matters. However, he or she might be happy to discuss his or her favorite team
or musical band.

Way of Starting Small Talk
ing Our Small Talk with Curiosity
Importance of Small Talk in Our Life
ing Our Relationship Through Small Talk
B [2019·大兴一模]
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and someone very special—a little
old lady to me. She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give
you a hug?” I laughed and warmly answered, “Of course you may.” And she gave me a giant hug.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent (天真的) age?” I asked. She jokingly replied,
“I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and
travel.” “No, seriously?” I asked. I was curious about what I heard.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one,”she told me. After
class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milk shake. We became instant
day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was
always fond of listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became famous in the college and she easily made friends
wherever she went. At the end of the school year we invited Rose to speak at our football celebration
2
party. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
At the beginning of the party she was so nervous that she almost fell over, then she leaned
into the microphone and said, “I’m sorry I’m so nervous. I’ll never get my speech back in order
so let me just tell you what I know.” As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, “We do not
stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets
to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.”
“You have to laugh and find humor every day.”
“You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you will die. We have so many people
walking around who are dead and don’t even know it.”
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years
old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years
old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything, I will turn
eighty- eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow
up by always finding the opportunity in change.”
“Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for
things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing
The

Rose
. She challenged each of us to study
the lyrics (歌词) and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One
week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who
taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.
Remember—growing older is a must; growing up is a choice.

C [2019·东城二模]
Most students have experienced those school nights when they try to stay awake while doing
homework. However, is homework the only reason why students stay up too late? For many, the answer
may be factors(因素) such as electronics and technology, yet for others, the reply focuses on the
balance between schoolwork and extracurricular(课外的) activities.
Most students grow up developing some type of hobby. Whether it is playing baseball on the
weekends, or joining a chess club after school, taking part in extracurricular activities is a large
part of students’ daily r, as schoolwork and pressure increase in high school, many
students argue that extracurricular activities must fall by the wayside because they are not needed,
or not so important. “High school is a time when you’re supposed to explore what you love,”
Samantha Luk, a high school student, said. When it comes to setting a timetable, however, Luk said
she was often under pressure to give more importance to study. This thought of giving up personal
interests for study is common among many students. They find it challenging to prove whether
developing the interests is advantageous.
As a cross- country runner, journalism fan and violin lover, I disagree with those who decrease
the importance of after-school activities. There are many reasons why involvement in after-school
activities is beneficial. The most important point is that sports, clubs and regular meetings give
students time to enjoy each other’s company(陪伴) and start up friendships. These activities also
allow teenagers to follow their interests and to reduce stress. So in spite of(尽管) heavy schoolwork,
students should keep on following their hobbies although it is very hard.
Some students, on the other hand, choose the opposite way. They spend too much time on their
hobbies that they are passionate(狂热的) mes this passion helps students get
recognition or prizes for their surprising talents, but generally speaking, it just makes one student
different from the other.
Schoolwork and interests are of different values, so one should never have to choose between
study and extracurricular activities, unless he or she wants to. Each student should try to balance
4
them, and your balance may differ from others’. Achieving this kind of balance is to find out what
is important for completely depends on your personal preference.
what Samantha Luk said, we know that . ( )
was good at setting a timetable
often stayed up studying at night
spent a lot of time on her hobbies
put her study before her interests
writer probably agrees that . ( )
sing talents can help students succeed
-school activities are necessary and important
ts should choose either study or their interests
ts need to develop hobbies different from others’
might be the best title for the passage? ( )
