1.Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each
sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

If you shower before bed, you've probably wondered whether sleeping with damp hair is a
problem. Maybe you've heard it could make you sick, or that it can damage your hair or skin.

What's the truth? Let's address the can make you sickmyth first. says Dr.
William Schaffner, a professor of medicine. While this idea persists, Schaffner says it was long ago
disproved. It's true that you're much more likely to catch a common cold during the winter
months. But this has to do with the ways respiratory (呼吸的) viruses spread, he says.

________ Illness- causing bacteria and viruses don't appear naturally, and so you're not going to
make yourself ill by getting your pillow a little damp at night, Schaffner says. But there is a
possible exception. Some research has shown that pillows—especially those made with synthetic
materials—can contain asthma- or allergy- triggering molds (哮喘或致敏菌) and fungus, which
tend to do well in damp environments, and so do dust mites, says Dr. Payel Gupta, a
spokesperson for the American Lung Association.

Gupta says there's no evidence that people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy or
asthma symptoms. ________ But if you wake up with a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes,
breathing problems or other allergy or asthma symptoms—or even if you don't—you should
wash your pillow cases and sheets in hot water at least once a week to reduce your exposure to
any potential irritants (刺激物).

When it comes to the health of your hair and skin, there may be a few other reasons to worry
about wet hair. it's thought not to be good for hair to sleep with it wet, says Dr.
George Cotsarelis, a professor of dermatology

It's also worth noting that almost anything you do to your hair—from brushing and blow-drying
it to coloring it or exposing it to the sun—can damage it.

A. Hence, any concerns about wet hair are theoretical.

B. In some cases, wet hair may actually be a helpful sleep aid.

C. Over time, it can lead to breakages, as well as a loss of shine.

D. There may be some mild risks associated with going to bed with wet hair.

E. Another wet-hair rumor (谣传) is the idea that harmful bacteria will colonize your pillow.

F. This idea seems to fit into the old bit of custom that getting yourself chilled and wet will cause
you to come down with a cold.

【答案】 F;E;A;C

Another wet-hair rumor (谣传) is the idea that harmful bacteria will
colonize your pillow. “关于湿头发的谣言就是细菌会占满你的枕头”,后文对这个观点进行
了反驳,切题,故选E。

(3)考查对上下文的理解和推理判断能力。根据空前“Gupta says there's no evidence that
people who sleep with wet hair experience more allergy or asthma symptoms”可知,没有证据
A. Hence, any concerns about wet hair
are theoretical. “因此,任何关于湿头发的担忧都是理论上的”,没有实际意义,开启下
文,切题,故选A。

(4)考查对上下文的理解和推理判断能力。根据空前“Generally, it's thought not to be good
for hair to sleep with it wet”可知,一般说来,湿头发睡觉对头发不好, C. Over time, it can
lead to breakages, as well as a loss of shine. “长时间这样的话,头发容易断,无光泽”,
承接上文,切题,故选C。

Confidence (自信) is very important in daily life. It can help you to develop a healthy attitude
A study shows that the people who are more confident are much happier. They can have
more chance to make themselves successful. When you are not confident you can't do well what
you want to do. But how to be more confident? Here are some suggestions:

Speak loud You speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. Try to speak
loud enough so that people can hear you clearly. The high voice can help you become more
confident.

Play sports Physical exercise makes you tired but completely relaxed. A strong body helps you
be full of confidence.

Encourage yourself Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things
you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everybody
laugh? Give yourself praise for the good things you've done.

Get rid of (消除) fear Fear comes along with failure (失败). But it's easy to overcome (克服) if
you know that failure is part of your life. Don't hide your head just because you said something
stupid last time. Try to start again and believe you can do better.

Pick up a hobby If you like singing, sing as much as you can. In some ways, a hobby can make
you outstanding. And it will make you happy and confident.

If there is one word to describe the progress made in the last 100 years, it's connectedness.
From the telephone to the radio to the TV to the Internet, we have found ways to bring us all
closer together, enabling,constant worldly access.

I don't think I need to highlight the benefits of all this. But the downsides are also beginning to
show. Beyond the current talk about privacy and data collection, there is perhaps an even more
detrimental side-effect here: We now live in a world where we're connected to everything except
ourselves. According to Pascal, we fear the silence of existence, and we dread boredom and
instead choose aimless distraction and use the noise of the world to block out the discomfort of
dealing with ourselves.

However, we ignore the fact that never facing ourselves is why we feel lonely an anxious in
spite of being so intimately connected to everything else around us.

Fortunately, there is a solution. The only way to avoid being ruined by this is to face it. It's to let
the boredom take you where it wants so you can deal with whatever it is that is really going on
with your sense of self. That's when you'll hear yourself think, and learn to engage the parts of
you that are masked by distraction.

The beauty of this is that, once you cross that initial barrier, you realize that being alone isn't so
bad. Boredom can provide its own stimulation.

When you surround yourself with moments of solitude and stillness, you become intimately
familiar with your environment in a way that forced stimulation doesn't allow. The world
becomes richer, the layers start to peel back, and you see things for what they really are, in all
their wholeness, in all their contradictions, and in all their unfamiliarity.

You learn that there are things you are capable of paying attention to than just what makes the
most noise on the surface. Just because a quiet room doesn
'
t scream with excitement like the
idea of immersing yourself in a movie or a TV show doesn't mean there isn't depth to explore
there.

Sometimes, the direction that this solitude leads you in can be unpleasant, especially when it
comes to introspection (内省)—your thoughts and your feelings, your doubts and your hopes—
but in the long term, it's far more pleasant than running away from it all without even realizing
what you are.

Being alone and connecting inwardly is a skill nobody ever teaches us. That's ironic because it
'
s
more important than most of the ones they do.

Solitude may not be the solution to everything, but it certainly is a start.

But the downsides are also beginning to show. Beyond
the current talk about privacy and data collection, there is perhaps an even more detrimental
side-effect here: We now live in a world where we're connected to everything except
We now live in a world where we're connected to

根据第二段中的”we fear the silence of existence“可知我们害怕独处。
此处考查用a__________ state of existence替换silence of existence,通过分析可知空格处应
填形容词,a silentquiet state of existence=silence of existence(独处)。

根据第二段中的”we dread boredom and instead choose aimless
distraction and use the noise of the world to block out the discomfort of dealing with
We feel so uncomfortable when
dealing with ourselves that we __________ from it all我们在面对自己时感到如此不舒适以至
we,故用 动词原形,填escape hide shrink withdraw。

However, we ignore the fact that never facing
ourselves is why we feel lonely an anxious“可知,我们却忽略了事实,那就是从未面对过自己
never facing ourselves is to ________ for our feeling lonely and
anxious. 此处用be to blame for”对……

Fortu nately, there is a solution.“也有提示,根据the判断此处填名词。故填solution(s)。

根据第五段中的”you realize that being alone isn't so bad. Boredom can
provide its own stimulation.“可知你会意识到孤独并没有那么糟糕,无聊会提供它自己的刺
激。 Being alone isn't so bad. __________ , you'll be stimulated by boredom.
InsteadRatherActually。

The world becomes richer, the layers start to peel back,
and you see things for what they really are, in all their wholeness, in all their contradictions, and
in all their unfamiliarity.“可知独处时世界变得丰富,层次开始剥落,你看到事物的本质,它

Just because a quiet room doesn
'
t scream with
excitement like the idea of immersing yourself in a movie or a TV show doesn't mean there isn't

Soli tude is the first step you should take to save yourself from being ruined by ________ and

Yellow Robot deliver snacks to your home

A robot makes its way back to a supermarket after making a delivery during a demonstration in
Beijing.

Along a street on the outer edges of Beijing, a yellow and black cube about the size of a small
washing machine moves leisurely to its destination. This “little yellow horse” is a delivery robot,
transporting daily essentials like drinks, fruit and snacks from the local store to the residents.
Equipped with GPS system, cameras and radar, the robot is seen by its creator as the future of
logistics(物流) in China.

“The weak point is that it can't deliver directly to the door like a human.” said one customer,
who does not live on the ground floor. “But it is still quite practical. The robot delivers relatively
quickly.”

The robot takes off for Chinese customers' love of cashless payments and smartphone
shopping. China is the world's biggest online shopping market with more than half of its
population making at least one smartphone purchase per month, according to professional
services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Whether buying electronics, toilet paper or clothes,
Chinese customers are used to simply tapping a button on their smartphone and getting a home
delivery.

To get a delivery via the “little yellow horse”, customers select the desired products, tap in the
address and pay via their phone. Then, the supermarket staff place the items in the robot.

Liu Zhiyong, founder and CEO of Zhen Robotics, which manufactures the robot, sees a bright
future for his creation. “At the moment, there are 100 million packages delivered every day in
China. It will be one billion in the future,” Liu said. “ There will not be enough humans to make
the deliveries. We need more and more robots to fill this gap and reduce costs.” These costs are
especially high in the last kilometer of a delivery.

My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words. Throughout my life, he offered advice
rarely. But the words were always appropriate to the situation I was facing.

As a teen when I struggled with making sense of the world around me, he said, “All things are
relative.” He taught me the right view of the world. When I was offered the opportunity to be a
manager of an organization as an undergraduate student, I asked him for advice because he was a
senior manager of a large company. His advice was simple, “Only when you become the manager
can you have a vision for how you can make the organization better; management isn't about
power and it's about leadership.” I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my
team but also to have leading ability. When I was feeling down, he explained, “Think that you
make the wrong choices in life, sometimes.”

My dad is 86 now, living on his own and enjoying life while struggling with the challenges that
aging brings. He keeps a positive attitude despite long pain and the losses that come in life.
Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the
joys of my young family. As I tell him how we're heading off cycling or on a trip or out to play
tennis, now his typical response is, “Do it while you can.” This is very important. We can't be sure
of the future. My father's advice is like the ancient dictum(格言)of “ carpe diem”— seize the
day and enjoy it to the fullest.

My dad rarely “lectured me”. He trusted me, and helped me when I needed help. His patience
and wisdom have been true gifts in my life. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his
most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. It's enough to “just get me started”.

(1)Why did the author's dad tell him “All things are relative.”? (No more than 10 words)

(2)What qualities should a manager have according to the author? (No more than 5 words)

(3)What is the purpose of the author's father talking with him on the phone every day? (No
more than 10 words)

(4)How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (No more than 10
words)

(5)How do you feel about the ancient dictum of “carpe diem”? (No more than 20 words)

(1)To teach the author the right view of the world.

(2)Both responsibility and leading ability.

(3)Learning (To learn) more about the pleasure of the author's family.

(4)His father's words make him take action.

(5)(One possible version:) I totally agree with it, because I think one should seize the day to
enjoy his life without regret.

The urge to share our lives on social media

People have long used media to see reflections of themselves. Long before mobile phones or
even photography, diaries were kept as a way to understand oneself and the world in which one
lives. In the 18th and 19th centuries, as diaries became more popular, middle-class New
Englanders, particularly white women, wrote about their everyday lives and the world around
them.

These diaries were not a place into which they poured their innermost thoughts and desires,
but rather a place to chronicle (记录) the social world around them. The diaries captured the
everyday routines of mid-19th-century life, and women diarists in particular focused not on
themselves but on their families and their communities.

Diaries today are, for the most part, private. But things were different for these New England
diaries. Young women who were married would send their diaries home to their parents as a way
of maintaining kin (血缘) relations. When family or friends came to visit, it was not uncommon to
sit down and go through one's journal together.

Diaries are not the only media that people have used to document lives and share them with
others. We have long used media like photo albums, baby books and even slide shows as a means
of creating traces (痕迹) of our lives. We do this to understand ourselves and to see trends in our
behaviour. We create traces as part of our identity and part of our memory.

Sharing everyday life events can strengthen social connection and intimacy (亲密感). For
example, you take a picture of your child's first birthday. It is not only a developmental milestone:
the photo also strengthen the identity of the family unit itself. The act of taking the photo and
proudly sharing it further reaffirms (再次证实) one as a good and attentive parent. In other
words, the media traces of others figure in our own identities.

Today's social media platforms are, by and large, free to use, unlike historical diaries, which
people had to buy. Today, advertising subsidises (补贴) our use of networked platforms.
Therefore these platforms encourage use of their networks to build larger audiences and to
better target them. Our pictures, our posts, and our likes are commodified—that is, they are used
to create value through increasingly targeted advertising.

Instead of social media merely connecting us, it has become a craze (狂热) for information,
continually trying to draw us in with the promise of social connectivity—it's someone's birthday,
someone liked your picture, etc. There's a multibillion-dollar industry pulling us into our
smartphones, relying on a longstanding human need for communication.

The urge to be present on social media is much more complex than simply narcissism (自恋).

Social media of all kinds not only enable people to see their reflections, but to feel their
connection as well.

Directions:Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the
box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you
need.

Most parents know that they need life insurance. But many would rather have a root canal
than shop for the best life insurance policy.

“People don't think about, What will my family do if I am gone and not earning a living?'” says
Peter Katt, a fee-only life insurance adviser.“ The whole point of this kind of planning is to provide
the family with maximum flexibility so they're not stuck.”

Planning for your death is not a cheerful topic. Too often, parents make a quick decision,
ignoring important considerations. Among their mistakes one is that they do not buy enough life
insurance. ________“They don't think that the person who is not bringing in an income needs life
insurance,” says Greg Daugherty, executive editor of Consumers Union. But if that person dies,
the other parent can't stop working and usually has to pay someone to help care for the family.

________ Katt recommended that one young couple should buy $$3 million for the husband
who earns $$100,000 a year and $$1 million for the stay-at-home wife.

At the same time, many families rely on employer- provided life insurance, but employer-
provided coverage is rarely sufficient to support your family. Many employer-provided policies
provide a death benefit of $$10,000 to $$25,000—barely enough to cover your funeral expense.
Some employers provide a year's salary, but that may also fall well short of the amount your
family would need to maintain its standard of living.

Some employers let workers buy group life insurance through payroll deductions. They may be
a good deal for workers who have health problems that would disqualify them for an individual
policy. But if you're young and healthy, you may be able to get a better rate on your own.

Another drawback is that if you leave your job, you may not be able to take your
insurance.“ Given the job market, most of us are not absolutely certain that our jobs are secure,”
Daugherty says.“________”

On the other hand, some families buy too much insurance. Not everyone needs life insurance.
Some people buy life insurance for babies, which is unnecessary, unless the baby is a child model
who is supporting the family, Daugherty says: The purpose of insurance is to replace the income
that a family has been relying on. Single people and those who have no children to care for
usually don't need life insurance.

Katt says a man with substantial savings in stocks and bonds and other sources of income
recently asked him how much life insurance he needs.“ I said none,” Katt says. “________”

A. There are people who don't need life insurance but have it and many more people who need it
but are woefully uninsured.

B. Families don't always insure a parent who is staying home to care for the children.

C. Most people put off buying life insurance for any number of reasons if they even understand it.

D. Even if you have a lot of insurance at work, it makes sense to have some more insurance on
your own.

E. If you fall seriously ill of suffer significant injury later, it will make it tougher to get that kind of
policy, if any at all.

F. To make insurance more affordable, you may not need to buy the same amount of insurance
for both parents.

【答案】 B;F;D;A

They Just Can't Help It

My theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy — the ability to understand
other people — and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. ________ For
example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will
choose magazines that feature computers and sport.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave
when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge
University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a
mobile. ________ It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in
other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys
which have clear functions. ________ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are
almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems- thinking, are also male-
chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four
times as many brain neurons (神经) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because
of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men. ________ Men tend to focus on a
limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view
tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but
this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they
find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. ________ It is not true.
The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and
why they are there.

A. Generally speaking, there are clear differences.

B. Their preference for building systems may change over time.

C. You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.

D. They will consider many sources of information at the same time.

E. It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.

F. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.

G. Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.

故选A。

Aside from the health benefits of laughter (which are numerous and significant), having a sense
of humor about life's difficulties can provide a way to bond with others, look at things in a
different way, normalize your experience, and keep things from appearing too overwhelming or
scary. Properly developed, a good sense of humor can keep people and relationships strong.

Studies show that having a smile on your face can make you feel better, and can lead you to
actually feeling happier (rather than just looking happier). Even if the smile is fake, the benefits
you will experience are real! Also, a fake smile leads readily to a genuine one. If you are able to
put a smile on your face, the laughter will come more easily, and the stress will melt more easily.

If your situation seems ridiculously frustrating, recognize what can develop into humor in just
how ridiculously frustrating and annoying it is. In your imagination, take the situation to an
extreme that becomes even more ridiculous until you find yourself amused. For example, when
you're waiting in a long line at the store, you can imagine that hours pass, then days, visualizing
yourself accepting visits from loved ones from your new home in this ultra-long line, holding your
children's birthday parties in aisle seven so you can be there to enjoy them...you get the picture.

Besides, find a friend with whom you can laugh also works! You can each share your
frustrations, and laugh about them in the process. Even when your friend isn't there, you can feel
less stressed by thinking about the retelling that will come later.

You can have a “most annoying boss” game with your friends, or try to count how many times
the same potentially frustrating event happens in a day.(“I was cut off in traffic 7 times today—
I'm almost up to 10!”) This works well for predictable or repetitive annoying situations that you
can't control; you can begin to value them in their own special way instead of letting them upset
you.

One of the factors that drive the popularity of shows like Modern Family or movies like the
classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, is that they take somewhat universal situations that many people
find frustrating and push them a little further, pointing out the silliness of it all.

What's more, you can try joining Funny ago, when Oprah had a show rather than a
network, she did a part on Laughter Yoga that interested me, and I researched a club on my own,
finding it to be a terrific place to enjoy a good laugh. Whether you mean business or laugh at the
silliness of it all, taking part in the exercises of laughter yoga with other humor- participants can
be a very effective way to get back in the practice of getting some more laughter into your day.

12.Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence be used
only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Today, in most of the theatres in Britain, the stages are situated behind a sort of arch (拱门),
called the proscenium (幕布前的舞台部分)arch. The arch runs across the building with the stage
on one side of it and the auditorium, housing the audience, on the other. The audience is kept to
the area from which it can get a clear view of the stage. This type of theatre has been is use for
three hundred years. ________ The actor can ignore them until the end, when they applaud the
performance. If an actor wants to speak to the audience he tends to step out of the picture, as it
were—down to the edge of the stage.

________ Stage furniture or properties—– are
now as few as possible. Elaborate scenery is used only when it is going to last throughout the play,
or when it is so constructed that it can be changed quickly. Modern theatres are built with the
stage extending far in front of the proscenium arch, if indeed they have a proscenium arch at all,
electricity, already long in use, has recently had a revolutionary effect. A change of lighting is as
good as a change of scenery, and simpler and quicker; it can light one part of the stage in place of
another. Footlights have been found unnecessary. Curtains also are hardly necessary, since the
stage can be darkened to signify the end of a scene.

The modern idea of having the stage in front of the proscenium arch is not really modern, of
course. It makes our stages much like Shakespeare's. ________ The famous speeches of Hamlet,
for instance, can be delivered more quietly and naturally than they were in the las century. The
actors no longer have to worry much about not being heard, or about turning their backs to the
auditorium. They can get closer to the audience, while a larger audience can see them at work.

Moreover, nowadays, people are finding that modern theatres are built to sit in comfortably for
two or three hours at a stretch. ________ The result of these improvements is that, in spite of the
high price of seats, perhaps more people than ever before are keen on theatre-going.

A. Over the last few decades, since the Second World War, theatrical customs have altered.

B. It makes people feel, as they watch a play or a show, that they are seeing a living and moving
picture.

C. All these innovations have quickened up the pace of the drama.

D. This is an advantage both for actors and audience.

E. Today the theatres are much more comfortable because of the many improvements.

F. Often they can meet and eat in the restaurants attached to the theatres.

【答案】 B;D;A;E

The famous speeches of Hamlet, for instance, can be delivered more
quietly and naturally than they were in the last century.”

The result of these improvements is that, in spite of the high price of seats,
perhaps more people than ever before are keen on theatre-going.”

G. If you are feeling sad, lonely, or worthless, you may be suffering from depression.

To overcome your depression, you have to first determine if what you're
feeling are the symptoms of depression.”

(4)根据前一句“For a jump start, find at least five things to be grateful for”可知,首先,你要

While you will not beat your depression by transforming your looks, if you take time
to maintain your appearance and hygiene every day, you will feel better about yourself”可知,

(Those times have changed, though.

可知 ,G项( But according to Grammarly, there are four times when it's OK to use this

that circumstance, sending and receiving letters is more of a formal greeting.)

根据空前的内容don't make grammar mistakes,
for example, letters or punctuation.
