Garbage sorting has become a hot issue around China, especially after Shanghai began carrying
out a regulation on July 1.

Beijing, as a forerunner in environmental protection, has thus been expected to follow suit. The
capital of the country has long been campaigning for sorting and recycling household waste, as
part of its environmental drive for sustainable growth, local media reported.

The current regulation gives garbage sorting responsibilities to government departments,
property management groups and other organizations. It also gives rules for companies, outlining
how they're responsible for waste collection, transportation and treatment. Only individuals are
not subject to responsibilities.

The long-awaited revision will soon change the situation,
it properly will be illegal, said Sun Xinjun, director of the Beijing Commission of Urban
Management. In Shanghai, violators are now fined up to 200 yuan ($$30)for trash-sorting
violations. The maximum fine in Beijing will not be less than that, he said.

The Beijing city government first set out to promote garbage sorting in 2009. Authorities have
since called on citizens to sort their household waste into four types-recyclable waste, kitchen
trash, dangerous waste and others-and leave it in a corresponding dustbin or trash can. Blue-
colored dustbins signify items within are recyclable, green represents kitchen trash, red
corresponds to dangerous materials and grey to other waste.

To promote the awareness of garbage sorting and expand the base of participants, authorities
have employed workers to help residents on the spot. With intelligent devices, those who throw
in recyclable waste at given sites will be rewarded with bonus points, which can be used to buy
daily goods. At some communities, there are no color-coded dustbins. Instead, a scheduled
garbage collection service is offered to help improve the environment. In other communities,
workers offer a door-to-door service to collect recyclables or kitchen waste.

Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group has been promoting new garbage sorting
facilities such as recycling cabinets and smart kitchen waste trash cans since 2016, Xinhua News
Agency reported. Nearly 26,000 metric tons of household waste is generated across Beijing on a
daily basis and 29 terminal garbage disposal facilities are working at full capacity. Nearly 9.3
million tons of household waste was processed in the city last year.

I became a magician by accident. When I was nine years old, I learned how to make a coin
disappear. I'd read The Lord of the Rings and risked coming into the adult section of the library to
search for a book of spells (魔法) — nine being that curious age at which you're old enough to
work through more than 1, 200 pages of mysterious fantasy literature but young enough to still
hold out hope that you might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. The book I found
instead taught basic sleight-of- hand (戏法) technique, and I devoted the next months to practice.

Initially, the magic wasn't any good. At first it wasn't even magic; it was just a trick — a bad
trick. I spent hours each day in the bathroom running through the secret moves in front of the
mirror. I dropped the coin over and over, a thousand times in a day, and after two weeks of this
my mom got a carpet sample from the store and placed it under the mirror to eradicate the
sound of the coin falling again and again.

I had heard my dad work through passages of new music on the piano, so I knew how to
practice — slowly, deliberately, going for precision rather than speed. And then I tried the illusion
(错觉) in the mirror and an unbelievable scene took place. It did not look like a magic trick. It
looked like a miracle. I knew that I had got what I wanted.

One day I made the performance on the playground. We had been playing football and were
standing by the backstop in the field behind the school. A dozen people were watching. I showed
the coin to everyone. Then it disappeared. The kids screamed. They yelled, laughed, scrambled
away. Everyone went crazy. This was brilliant.

(1)What did the author enter the adult section of the library to do?

A. To kill his time.

B. To find a book of magic. C To read The Lord of the Rings. D. To learn knowledge of literature.

(2)What does the underlined word

A. Get rid of. B. Give out. C. Imitate. D. Distinguish.

(3)What contributed to the author's success?

A. His mother's help. B. The secret of quick moves.

C. The inspiration from his father. D. His repeated hard practice.

(4)How would the author feel about the result of his performance on the playground?

A. It's fantastic. B. It's funny. C. It's awkward. D. It's disappointing.

【答案】 (1)B

(2)A

(3)C

(4)A

the adult section of the library to search for a book of spells ”我读过《魔戒》,并且冒险进入

故选A。

I had heard my dad work through passages of new
music on the piano, so I knew how to practice — slowly, deliberately, going for precision rather
than speed. And then I tried the illusion (错觉) in the mirror and an unbelievable scene took
place. It did not look like a magic trick. It looked like a miracle.”

They yelled, laughed, scrambled away. Everyone
went crazy.
A。

Standing desks have become common across Silicon Valley, offering health benefits to those
willing to work on their feet. However, due to their high price, they have failed to catch on until
now. Recently, Ikea has brought out Bekant convertible(可变换的) standing desk that can
become a normal desk at the touch of a button. The $$500 adjustable desk can transform from a
standard desk to a standing one, and Ikea hopes it could make the standing desk mainstream.

Experts say that changing from a seated to a standing desk can improve productivity. Similar
desks have become a common sight at tech firms such as Google, where some employees have
even installed treadmill (跑步机) and bicycle desks.

The desk is not the first
an adjustable desk. The $$3,890 Stir Kinect desk has a motor to raise and lower itself, changing it
into a standing desk or a traditional desk. The desk can even be programmed to move up and
down slightly, making it appear to take a gentle breath to remind the user to change their
positions. To move between sitting and standing positions, owners simply double tap on the
screen. The desk can learn the user's preferences over time and suggest the best seating position.

The Stir Kinect desk was created by a team of ex-Apple and Disney engineers. It has a built-in
touch screen to control and track movement, and can tell users exactly how many calories they
burn by standing during their working day. It also has devices containing power points and USB
ports for charging phones, to keep cables hidden.

Huawei Technologies Co. displayed its much-anticipated in-house operating system Harmony
OS on Friday, marking what some call the Chinese tech giant's biggest push yet to build its own
software ecosystem for the era of the internet of things.

The move is also expected to weaken the influence of the United States government's
restrictions on Huawei using Google's Android operating system in smartphones, analysts said.

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, speaking in Dongguan, Guangdong
province, said it is difficult to deliver a smooth experience across different devices with the huge
amount of codes involved in the Android and Linux operating systems. Linux is an open-source
operating system widely used in personal computers and other hardware.

In 1953, a mountain climber reported seeing a bar-headed goose soar over the peak of Mount
It was thought impossible. Now researchers who raised 19 of the geese—
named for the black stripes on the backs of their heads—have shown the birds really fly so high.

The team trained the youngsters to fly in a large wind tunnel wearing backpacks and face
masks full of sensors that recorded their heart rate. blood oxygen levels, temperature, and
metabolic rate—how many calories they burned per hour. The researchers simulated(模拟)10w-,
medium-, and high-altitude conditions by altering the concentration of oxygen supplied to face
masks worn by each goose as it flew in the tunnel.

Birds already have a better heart and lungs than mammals for sustained physical activity. And
researchers knew that bar-headed geese have even larger, thinner lungs that let them breathe
more deeply and an even bigger heart to pump more oxygen to muscles than other birds.

The wind tunnel experiments showed that when the concentration of oxygen was at its lowest-
like the 7% found on top of Mount Everest versus 21% at sea level—the geese's heart rate and
frequency of wing beats remained the same even as their metabolic rate dropped. Somehow, the
birds managed to cool down their blood-the measured blood temperature dropped so it could
take in more oxygen, the researchers report today in eLife. This cooling likely helps compensate
for the very thin air, the team says.

Although well trained, the birds were only willing to stay in the air a few minutes-or less when
wearing their backpacks and flying at 6ihighaltitudes. So it's not clear whether these
adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount
Everest. But those few minutes showed these geese really could fly over the top of Mount Everest.

(1)Why did the researchers raise 19 bar-headed geese and train them?

A. To test the flying height and speed of them.

B. To confirm they could fly over Mount Everest.

C. To observe them flying through the wind tunnel.

D. To see how many calories they burned per hour.

(2)What can we learn from the wind tunnel experiment?

A. It was carried out at very high altitude.

B. The geese managed to breathe less when their blood decreased.

C. The geese could live through the lowest concentration of oxygen.

D. It shows the geese could fly at high altitude for long.

(3)What still puzzles scientists about the geese?

A. Whether they have super hearts and lungs.

B. Whether they have muscles pumped more oxygen to.

C. Whether they are willing to wear backpacks and face masks.

D. Whether they can manage to fly 8 hours to climb over Mount Everest.

(4)Where does the text most probably come from?

A. A science fiction. B. A climbing guide. C. A travel brochure. D. A science report.

A great number of species make their home in the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Although
the entire ocean makes up an ecosystem, many smaller habitats are found within, including an
open-water habitat off the coast of the Northern Atlantic Ocean known as the Sargasso Sea.
Sargassum is an alga(海藻) that floats in masses that can continue for miles. The waters of the
Gulf Stream push the water in a northward move into this area. This constant move and varying
temperature support the accumulation of the brown-colored seaweed.

The Sargasso Sea is so enormous that one method of information collection has not been
enough for scientists to obtain an accurate picture of what takes place within this ecosystem.
Researchers have needed to employ several methods of sampling. Methods such as dragging nets
over the surface of the water and videotaping beneath areas of sargassum have served scientists
well. Information collected has shown that the Gulf Stream pushes brown algae from open water
into the Sargasso Sea area, creating a diverse floating habitat in an area that would otherwise not
support that wildlife.

In the most recent study of the sargassum community off the shores of North Carolina, eighty-
one fish species were documented as using the area as a microhabitat. This is an increase from
previous studies. The types of fish found here are both commercially and environmentally
important. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is working to regulate the harvesting
of sargassum. The Council hopes to have the area classified as an Essential Fish Habitat. Which
would afford it certain protections.

Further research needs to be done before scientists understand how to best protect the
Sargasso Sea as well as understand how it goes about supporting so many important types of
wildlife.

(1)The author uses

A. the Atlantic Ocean is really amazing in terms of its size and area

B. what the researchers do is highly respected by scientific community

C. the research work is complex because a large area must be covered

D. a large amount of money for the Sargasso Sea research is needed

(2)It can be inferred from the phrase to be donein paragraph 4 that the author
thinks .

Sargasso ecosystem is worth our attention and needs more study

scientific community has ignored this complex ecosystem

Sargasso Sea is becoming a problem and needs removing

methods for researching the ecosystem must be found instantly

(3)The text is mainly about .

ity of wildlife in the Atlantic Ocean

ent habitats of sea animals
