About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a
Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder(汽缸)
Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old.
He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he
thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and —
WHUMP! — it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! SCREECH...!!!! Immediately Josh stopped the car,
jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid,
was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!Building up a head of
steam, he went on. That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is goanna cost you a lot of money.
Why did you throw it?

the brick because no one else would stop!eaming down the boy’s face as he pointed
around the parked car. 路边) and fell out of
his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.
help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.
Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in
his throat. Straining, he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his
handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be OK.
He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk back to the black, shining 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE — a long and slow walk. Josh
never did fix the side door of his Jaguar. He kept the dent (凹痕) to remind him not to go through
life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention. Feel for the bricks of life
coming at you.

B
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but
manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become
fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s
seat is another matter altogether.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed
drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the
other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and
fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an
atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of
politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize
politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves
a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to
stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever
they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these
grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to
correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.
Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years
ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more
give- and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
45. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by _______.
A. road conditions B. the speed of modern life
C. the behavior of the drivers D. the large number of cars
46. In the writer’s opinion, ________.
A. drivers should avoid traffic jams
B. strict traffic rules are badly needed
C. unskillful drivers should be punished
D. drivers should show road politeness properly

C. offering help to others as much as possible
D. willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes
48. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Road politeness B. Traffic problems
C. Bad manners on the road D. Good divers and bad drivers

Years after throwing a bottle-up note into a lake for a class project and just one year after his
death, a man’s childhood message was found and returned to his mother.
Eleven years ago, a then 10-year-old boy, Joshua Baker, wrote the message, folded and put it in
an empty container, his mother, Maggie Holbrook said. He died last February in a motor vehicle
accident in California. He had recently returned after a serving in the Middle East as a US marine.
“ I think he was just letting us know he was Ok and keep doing what we are doing ,” Holbrook said.
The message surfaced in White Lake in late April, just days after the 11th anniversary(周年纪
日)of its being thrown into the lake. It was found by one of Baker’s closest friends, Steve Lieder, she
said. Lieder and two friends were chatting near the lake when Lieder looked down and saw the
bottle. He broke it open and found the note inside.
“My name is Joshua Baker. I am 10. If you find this, put it on the news. The date is 4/16/98.”
They immediately took it to Holbrook, who said she is now having the note preserved and will
display it in her home.
She can remember when her son wrote the message for the school project. She said she
always wondered why he didn’t put it in the nearby Wolf River, which has a much stronger current.
“I still remember the day he wrote it,” Holbrook said. “ I couldn’t understand why he threw it
in the lake. No one would never see it again. Now I know.”

D
Online games, social-networking Web sites, and chat rooms are empowering and
motivating(刺激) for teens and help with their development. When adults look at teens today, they
think what they are doing is different and seem to be wasting a lot of time. And those activities
seem quite foreign. But when we look closely at what kids are doing, it’s not much more different
than what their parents did. They are hanging out with their friends, finding romantic partners, and
trying to identify themselves.
Today’s teens are being raised with technologies that allow them to have self-directed
learning on their own terms, on their own time, and without the restrictions of a classroom setting.
This gives the teens a feeling of freedom. This is very different from how kids learn in school when
they are handed a set body of knowledge required to master by their teachers.
Teens were motivated to engage online because they were either driven by interest or
friendship. And there are some specific findings according to a research:
One major finding is that there is a generation gap in how parents and teens view the teen's
online activities. Adults think the activities draw their attention from school work and are left in the
dark about what their teens are doing online. Teens, on the other hand, understand the value of
the Internet and are motivated to participate.
Another finding shows that teens are not taking full advantage of the Internet. They are using
the social networks to chat and post photos and make friends, which are important to their
development, but they are not making use of other existing opportunities to learn about
astronomy, foreign languages, and other subjects only a few clicks away.
Teens are also improving their social skills online by learning the basic social and technical skills
needed to interact in today's digital world.
Pressure from those of the same age also takes on a new role online. Teens are reporting that
they are more motivated by those of their age online with public spaces that allow the teens to
interact and provide feedback(反馈) to one another.
While teens are using the Internet for both social and intellectual development, they are also
facing significant challenges on how to manage their relationships online.
53. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Teen’s on line activities. B. Making use of Internet.
C. The power of online activities. D. Technology and teens.
54. Which of the following best describes how the writer thinks about teens’ online activities?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Understandable. D. Concerned.
55. Which of the following will the writer probably agree with?
A. Internet is a source of learning not as important as classrooms for teens.
B. Teens have no trouble dealing with online relationship.
